[Dairine has been in quite a funk since the beginning of the month. Finding out her best friend went home would be trying enough. But Conan had also been her roommate, which made his absence impossible to ignore. The apartment feels uncomfortably quiet without his complains and rebuttals.]

[Every day she hurries out of the building to her job so she doesn't have to linger on it. As a result, Dairine has been spending most of her time at Scribes and Scripts, pouring herself into her work. Customers and coworkers are both welcome distractions. However, she isn't quite her usual self, and it is hard to hide that.]

[It takes some time for her to remember the Beika sub-archway. Once it crosses her mind, Dairine takes a detour through Attleton on her trip home. This might be a bad idea. If the sub-archway is gone, then the loss will only sting more. Yet there it stands. Her heart leaps for a moment, then suddenly sinks again as she realizes what this means.]

[There's something she needs to do.]

[It's Mavis first day of work as a Clerk at Scribes and Scripts. She's excited. She runs down the street, barefoot, as always. Her hair floats behind her like a sail. When she pushes the door of the shop, she's slightly out of breath but she has such a big smile on her face it could light up the whole room.

When she notices Dairine, she bows respectfully.] Good morning, Dairine! I'm Mavis, your new employee. I'm ready to work hard today.

[Dairine was sitting at the main desk when the shop door opens. The young wizard looks up from the book she was reading, then gives a slightly tired smile.]

[Mavis's positive energy has two effects on Dairine. One, her mood lifts just enough to make the smile genuine. Two, deep down it makes her feel guilty for not being so cheerful at the job, which brings a twinge of jealousy. Luckily, Dairine is more knowledgeable about her emotions than she used to be, so she knows better than to let it impact a work relation.]

[She stands up as Mavis bows.]

Morning, Mavis. How was the trip here?

[Mavis notices the fact that Dairine seems a bit weary but losing people close to you do that to people. She also notices the effort Dairine makes to force a genuine smile on her face and she appreciates that, a lot.]

It's not that far from where I live. And the weather's nice enough. So it made for a pleasant walk.

[Never minds, she actually ran all the way there.]

So what will you have me do today?

Oh really? Good to hear.

[That is when Dairine notices the bare feet. Whoops, she hadn't thought to bring up shoes. It is so prevalent in her culture, but there are too many worlds represented here for her to assume. Drat. Really should have mentioned that after the interview.]

[She scratches her chin awkwardly. How to bring it up...]

Urm... Even without shoes? [The roads seem pretty rough in Fayren to go barefoot.]

Well, I know where you can start. Follow me.

[With that, Dairine will lead her through a door to the store's backroom.]

[Mavis shrugs and smiles.] I never wear shoes.

[She nods and follows Dairine to the backroom.]

Ah.

[Well, in that case, maybe she shouldn't make a big deal of it. It's not like Fayren has a labor law about wearing shoes to work. At least not that she knows. Dairine'll look into it just to be sure.]

[The room is smaller than the main store, with shelves and desks against the walls. Books are stacked in numerous spots, as well as lining the shelves. Near the center of the room is a table with a much messier pile of books covering the surface. Dairine walks up to the table.]

These are our most recent finds and donations. They just arrived last evening. I need them to be sorted into their respective categories before we get them ready for the shelves. OK?
