Who: Athrun and Sonico
What: Date night. Confession inbound.
Where: Ice cream store in Genessia.
When: An evening in April.

Athrun took a deep breath before he left his apartment. Tonight he was determined to tell Sonico how he feels about her. He's very nervous, as to be expected when gearing up for a confession, but he did a good job of hiding it. He then left for the date.

A little while later, Athrun was standing by the ice cream shop. He was clad in a blue sweater and khakis, and looking around for his date.

Sonico turned up just in time, wearing a skirt that went as far as her ankles to cover her legs, and she wore a cardigan over her shirt. Her hair was down and there was a thin scarf around her neck too, her whole ensemble designed to look pretty but to hide her cuts and bruises.

She waved shyly when she saw Athrun waiting and hurried over to him, "Hello! I'm sorry if I'm late."

Athrun shook his head, smiling warmly. Right now, it was easy for him to do; seeing Sonico look like this, even if she was covering up her wounds, made him happy. She looked simply too sweet.

"Not at all. Especially if it helped you make yourself look as nice as you do right now."

Sonico blushed at his comment, glancing down at her outfit and glad that it pleased him. She had put a lot of thought into it, after all. "Thank you..." Then she looked up at him shyly, "You look nice too."

Athrun was accustomed to being told he looked nice, so he didn't falter much. Instead, he took in the sight of Sonico blushing -- it made her even more endearing than normal, and that was saying a lot.

Thanks. Now, let's go order something, shall we?"

Sonico stood as he looked at her, wondering if she should have said something more. Still, she smiled at him and nodded, taking a step closer and standing nearer him. "Yes, please. That sounds good."

Athrun led the way over to the shop. They had a wide variety of frozen treats available, from Italian ice to ice cream, even hybrids of the two. Athrun went and ordered a waffle cone filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate chips and melted caramel. Once Sonico ordered, he would pay for both their treats, then lead the way over to a nearby bench.

Sonico looks around the place quite excitedly - it looks very pretty and the food looks good too! She orders a cone too, but with raspberry sorbet and coconut sprinkles.

"Thank you." She smiles gratefully as she follows him to the bench, carefully taking a seat. "I like this place."

"This isn't the first time you've come here, then?" After asking that question, Athrun began to work on his cone. It was soft serve, so he simply licked a portion of the ice cream off the top.

"Mmm. This is good. Very creamy."

"Oh, no it is. I was just observing how nice it was here." She smiles at Athrun, then turns to eat her own. She uses the wafer that was stuck in the top to start scooping small sections of sorbet and letting them melt on her tongue. "Mmm. And this tastes great too. So fruity!"

"Good. Maybe we'll come here again." Especially depending on how things go from here. For now, though, he stretched his legs and worked away at his ice cream.

"How have you been feeling lately? Glad to be living without assistance again?"

Sonico smiles and nods as she happily continues to enjoy her sorbet. Again, Sonico nods, but her movements are slower, more thoughtful. "Yes. I've been better, thank you. Leaving the house is a little easier, and I've gone back to work. At the diner that is." When she adds that last bit she looks at him shyly, afraid to point out her new flaws and why she won't be doing any modelling for a while. "How have you been?"

Athrun turned to glance at Sonico curiously. He almost said something, but decided against it. Instead, he returned to his ice cream.

"How have I been? All right. Life is back to normal for me, though I am still trying to get involved in things I'm interested in for my own sake."

It seemed that Athrun still remembered that promise he and Sonico had made months ago.

"Really?" Sonico smiled. "Are you finding some fun things to do? Things to relax with?" She looked at him as she continued her sorbet, then her cone, interested.

"Mostly books to read, to be fair." Athrun bit into his own cone before continuing. "But I'm picking up some fictional works now. Before I mostly read nonfiction, but lately I've been trying my hand at murder mysteries."

Athrun then grinned sheepishly. "They've been a little too easy to solve, though."

"Oh - I've been trying to read more fiction too." Sonico giggles at his comment about the murder mysteries. "Some of them are so predictable, aren't they? I tried reading an adventure but it was a little strange. Then I tried some romance, and a little sci-fi. I haven't found anything I really love yet, though."

"Ah, you too?" Athrun lightened up a bit. "I thought it might be because of my being a Coordinator, but apparently not. Maybe we just haven't found good ones yet."

He seemed to have no qualms about mentioning his being a Coordinator in public. It was probably due to the fact that the term requires context to really understand.

"Maybe that's all it. I'm so used to reading non-fiction that maybe I just need to get used to it somehow." She smiled, then finished off her cone, lightly licking at the tips of her fingers when she was done. "If we find anything good, we should share our recommendations!"

Athrun nodded as he worked on his more. "Sure, sounds good to me."

He then fell silent for a few minutes, just enjoying the atmosphere. There was nothing he felt like saying quite yet, and the sun was finally starting to set.

When he finished off his ice cream, he took a deep breath. Time to stop procrastinating.

"There was one thing specific I wanted to talk to you about here, though."

Sonico was quite happy to sit in silence with him too, looking out as the sun slowly began to set. She brushed the crumbs off her skirt and turned to him, seemingly a little concerned. "Of course. Is everything okay?"

Athrun quickly nodded. "Yes. Everything's fine. It's just...oh man, how do I begin..."

Athrun had to ponder this. When he got together with Cagalli, no confession had been involved. It just happened. So this is still new territory for him.

"It's more about...how I feel with you. You've made me feel differently from the way anyone else here has made me feel. Even compared to people back home. And as we've spent more and more time together, it's only gotten stronger."

He took a deep breath. "And in this case, I realized...this whole time, I...I've been falling for you. Sonico, I really like you."

Sonico sat back, a little more relieved when he started nodding. Still, she sensed that there was something that he wanted to say, so she just sat quietly and waited to hear what he had to say.

When he talked about how he felt about her, she turned to him suddenly and blushed, then glanced away as he continued. No one had ever said this kind of thing to her before, and now that it was happening, she had no idea what to say. Finally, she took a small breath and looked at his shoes, rather than at his face. "I...That's... Well, I like you too, Athrun. A lot..."

The way that she said it suggested that there was a 'but' she hadn't added as she stared at their feet.

Athrun's head tilted to the side ever slightly. The expression on his face changed from a nervous one to a curious one.

"Um...it, uh, sounds like you have...something else to say?"

He's fervently praying that it isn't a "but."

"Well...it's just that..." Sonico paused and glanced back up at him, but still too nervous to meet his eye. "The thing is, no one has ever really...said these things. So I - I'm not entirely sure what I should say next or what should happen next."

"Oh." Athrun couldn't help but feel sheepish. He scratched the back of his head, blushing.

Well, the question is this -- will you be my girlfriend?"

Best to just spit it out.

The question is sure a surprising one, and she continued to bite her lip in response, still looking down at her feet while her toes slid back and forth. "Athrun, I like you. But...before that can happen I feel like...I'd need more time. That we should spend some more time together too, before thinking about being...like that." She spoke softly and with feeling, afraid of upsetting him.

Athrun's face remained set in its current state. He didn't show it, but he was disappointed. However, he wasn't rejected, so he realizes that there's still a chance. Especially since she did say that she likes him.

"All right. If that's what you want to do, that's fine with me. Take all the time you need."

He said that genuinely. He only wants Sonico to be his girlfriend if she wants to.

Sonico's shoulders hunch as she watches the sunset, though not quite looking at it as intensely. She looks at him for a moment, not quite meeting his eye. "Don't you think so...? Wouldn't you want to spend more time together too? Being..in touch more?"

Athrun, on the other hand, continued to look at Sonico.

"Of course. I love spending time with you. If I didn't, I wouldn't have developed these feelings in the first place."

Sonico finally turns and looks up at him, blushing a little to realise that he had been looking at her this whole time. But she smiles at him happily for a moment or two, even moving slightly closer to him on the bench. "This sunset is really something..."

Athrun finally turned his own attention to the sunset. "Yes, it is. A sunset on a clear evening is always impressive."

"You've picked a really lovely spot here." Sonico smiles at him then turns to enjoy watching the sunset for a few moments.
