[Kay has decided to record this little experiment so he's able to check his progress in the future. But he turns the video into a public post by accident, hitting the wrong button and making his misery visible for everyone.

He's a bit stressed right now, you see.

The droid is sitting behind a desk, a paper in front of him with unintelligible scribbles on it, and one of the Attleton city reports next to his left hand. Everything in the Guardian's Office, all the information, files, important documentation...everything is written on paper. To Kay, those letters could pretty much just be stick figures drawn with paint at the bottom of a cave. He wasn't joking when complained to Cassian that people in this city lived in the stone age.

He is trying, Force knows he is, except the little letters make no sense and when he copies them on the paper his processor automatically switches to Aurebesh and nothing seems right.

He hunches over and grabs a pencil that immediately breaks in half. After a small sigh, Kay clenches one of the pieces. He tries to continue writing with half a pencil, only for the tip of to snap, falling and rolling on the opposite side of the room floor.

Kay stares in silence at the tip, then looks down to realize that when the thing broke, it ripped part of the paper. If Kay had eyes instead of optics, this would be the moment when people would witness his soul departing his body.

Leaving the broken pencil on the other side of the table -and next half a dozen more broken pencils-, Kay throws the paper into the nearest trash can with deadly accuracy. The paper ball would have gotten inside the trash can without issue if it wasn't because it's already filled to the brim with crumpled papers.

[ooc: guess what little thing doesn't exist in the star wars universe? Paper! And guess who never learned how handwriting works? Actually, all of the SW space folks. The Struggle™ is real and Kay wants to cry.]

[Sorry Grievous, nothing against you but Kay was so startled that someone might have witnessed this mess that the stoop up abruptly. And toppled over the desk doing so, oops.

It takes him a second to find the communicator.]

General? Did I send you the recording?

[From his office, Jaune tilts his head, and then his whole body, falling out of his chair and looking back up.]

You okay there?

[By not he already realized his humiliation has been broadcasted, oh well.

And Jaune, careful not to hurt yourself.]

No....[Yep, still sounds like someone kicked one of his pets.] Writing is evil, Jaune.

I know it is. [He says it with complete sincerity.]

Why not just get a tablet? ...Or a stronger pen.

You had troubles with it too? [It's nice that someone understands.]

What's a tablet? I tried but they keep breaking. In my world we don't use this kind of primitive technology but everything in Attleton is written in paper. It can be so easily damaged and lost, it's a terrible way to store data.

I don't break a lot of pencils but my handwriting's messy. And I don't like writing. It takes too much time.

A tablet is like... it's like a small computer or large phone. You can even write and draw on some. If it's that important, they should at least have electrical backups if they're going to be storing everything.

[It's not unheard of in Han's version of the universe, but it's still way less common than datapads. Han can read and type, but never spent too much time learning to write, either.]

Yeah, kind of annoying not having datapads. I'm probably going to have to brush up, too.

[Colette watches worriedly from home, hand reaching out like she wants to help before she realizes she can't and it's recalled back near her mouth. She realizes this probably wasn't meant to be public, but she can't just leave when he looks so dejected!]

Um, Kaytoo? Do you need some help?

What are you trying to accomplish here?

[Besides seeming to cause some destruction, or at least a mess.]

I don't think I've ever seen an android write.

[Something new has been learned today.]

I haven't seen anybody write. It's not something we do, in my world.

I'm trying to adapt to how things are done here. It's nto going too well.

[By now, he has already realized that his sad attempt at writing has been made public, the universe hates droids.]

Hello, Colette. That couldn't hurt. Do you know how to handwrite?

[Kay can read and type...with a keyboard. Using pens and paper is much more trickier in his opinion.]

I never done this before, it's more than annoying. It's humiliating. [It makes him feel stupid.]

It really does, using keyboards is much more clean and quickly.

That's a datapad! [Oh, those are the best news he's heard in a while.] I didn't know we had those here. Where can I find them?

Is writing not a thing that's easy for you?

It can be more difficult with robotic hands.

[There's an implication there that he isn't surprised by the notion itself.]

Really? Although technology has dwarfed the need, writing has always been instilled in us, just in case.

If you're looking to learn how to write, I would suggest children's workbooks, and slightly larger pencils.

Handwriting is not a thing we do in my Galaxy at all.

We use keyboards. [Like civilized people! He wants to add.]

[ Cassian steps out of the smaller office that is all his own for now, and steps behind Kay. He's close enough for his clothes to brush Kay's arm, and after a moment of hesitation he places his hand on the backrest of his chair, leaning in a little closer yet. ]

Hey.

[ His voice and eyes are soft. ]

You'll figure it out.

[Usually, Kay will give a sarcastic comment for an answer but he's too frustrated even for that.]

This thing is ancient and it's making me feel stupid. [He looks up at Cassians, optics dimmed.] I just want to help.

I know.

[ It's a frustration he shares, in truth, but he figures unloading his own annoyance on Kay won't help either of them. To see Kay so dismayed hurts. He trails his fingertips over his back. ]

You're helping. We're going to have growing pains here.

Maybe it's enough for today. We will run out of pencils if I try to keep this up. [Of he might end throwing the desk in anger. Instead, he leans back against Cassian's touch.]

I suppose you have a point. [But all if hard for Cassian too, being in a new position of power, and Kay wanted to make things easier for him not harder.] We don't have any money left to hire someone who can use a pencil, do we?

...are you attempting to teach yourself how to write?

[ That comment about pokemon now takes on a whole new meaning. ]
