002 | surrendering to gravity and the unknown

In Genessia City, wandering around today, is a lanky teenaged ~~hobo~~ former hobo.

He's hitting up all of the grocery stores he can walk to.

Not specifically to buy anything ... if someone runs into him, they'll catch him scowling and looking at prices under his breath. Shinjiro knows how it looks, though, and he'll usually walk out of the store with something. A jar of concentrated miso. Cabbage, vinegar, carrots, onion. He tries to pick things which don't weigh too much, considering his trek about town, but he also tries to pick things which won't spoil too quickly. After all, even though he hasn't found a job just yet, whatever he does find might not give him a lot of time to do more than quick food prep.

He might run into people there, or on his way from store to store.

Eventually, though, he'll end up at an nondescript cafe near Genssia Commons, buying the cheapest tea on its menu. Sitting outside, bags stacked on the ground beside him against the wall, he tries to do some research on the futuristic smart phone. Shinjiro looks frustrated, and it's really very clear he's not used to the device he was given on arrival.

Shinjiro also looks deeply conflicted about something.

how does healthcare work in Genessia?

also have there ever been cases of Apathy Syndrome here?

I can't say much about the health care. I've only been treated maybe once or twice.

What is "Apathy Syndrome?"

well that answers my question.

it's a condition where people stop doing anything. they basically collapse. they won't eat unless force-fed, they don't react to anything at all. they die if they're not cared for round the clock.

That's horrible... Though I haven't seen anything like that around.

Do you mean ennui? I'm afraid it's something all immortals must deal with. And some mortals, I suppose. The only way to deal with it is to be active.

not ... really. i guess it's a more extreme version. but it isn't caused by just being mortal.

people stop eating, caring for themselves, they won't react to pain or people talking or anything. they fall on the spot and barely breathe.

How peculiar. I've lived for quite some time and I've never heard of something like that before.

makes sense, though. if the place you came from didn't have it, and genessia doesn't have it, then why would you have heard of it?

I thought you meant something else, a feeling of listlessness. Not some illness like this.

Sadly I don't know much about the intricacies of insurance and doctors, etc. Thankfully I've never seen any examples of that Syndrome; for those of us with souls, I doubt apathy is tolerated for very long before we're done away with.

yeah, seems like everyone replying so far's pretty healthy.

and. trust me. I don't want to see apathy syndrome here.

How fortunate. I doubt anyone would. How did something like that start, anyway? It doesn't sound like nature's doing.

Never heard of that syndrome. I do know if you're hurt there's some healers around and places that offer potions. I don't know about illnesses though.

really glad that nobody's heard of Apathy Syndrome, trust me.

and, I've tried a bunch of potions and strange shit. don't think that's gonna work.

You might want to talk to the healers. I spoke to someone named Yukiko. She might be able to help.

she'll just say the same thing as you - which means she probably can't help.

No, but your description of it from other threads reminds me of a similar condition from my world. It's called a mental shutdown, and... well, it's exactly how it sounds. The person affected just shuts down entirely and collapses.

All the cases I've seen of it were fatal, too. But thankfully mental shutdowns aren't a thing here either.

yeah. a good thing, that.

without getting treatment, like getting fed and stuff, the lost would have died, too. but at least they don't die instantly.

never thought I'd consider them lucky.

It probably doesn't help that the people who got mental shutdowns were either in poor health already or standing in/next to the street, but I'm not actually sure if that would have affected their chances of survival or not.

huh. there were a couple of deaths like that. but there are a lot of others sick. it's pretty random where people get hit by it.

sometimes ~~after a full moon~~ after about a month they recover. some just get sick again. others, don't recover.

it seems to go in waves.
