The first rule of Fight Club is...
Who: Erza and Mirajane
What: Sparring between former rivals!
Where: the outskirts of Fayren
Warning: over-the-top shonen fighting antics. Nothing too violent, but trees and/or parts of mountains may be destroyed.
Now that things have finally gone back to normal in Fayren, Erza's ready to take Mirajane up on her offer to train every once in a while. Mira wants to get stronger, and Erza can hardly refuse such a request - she can hardly afford to get rusty. Besides, given how much they brawled when they were younger, this is bound to be nostalgic for both of them.
Once they're a good distance away from the town, Erza stops to look around. The mountain ranges are much closer than she's used to, and the trees could make for good cover (even if they won't last long - the two of them are easily some of the strongest mages in their continent). She turns to her fellow S-class mage with a confident smirk on her face.
"It's been a long time since we've done something like this, though it was never this organized." Usually, all it took was an errant remark that escalated to an all-out brawl. "Still, I'm ready when you are." Erza's wearing her usual breastplate, something that would raise eyebrows from a lot of people, but using her magic, she summons a sword into her hand, clearly eager to see what Mirajane can do.

She suspected Erza would have some way of dodging or countering the attack, but she might be caught off guard enough to allow Mirajane the quick upper hand in their spar. If she had managed to pin Erza she would follow up with a tumbling whip of her tail to slap Erza across the face, and using her claws to keep Erza's deft blade at bay. If Erza had somehow managed to dodge her, Mira's black wings would accelerate her into the air so she could begin an aerial bombardment of dark energy down at Erza. If she managed to counter the attack and hold her completely at bay? Well... then that's when things could start to get really interesting.
That icon fits this so well!
As the bombardment continues, she realizes too late that she's being boxed in. The knight dodges one blast, but another one follows close behind it and manages to hit its target.
Using the smoke to conceal her armour change, Erza jumps on to a tree branch in her Morning Star armour before rocketing into the air, scuffed up a bit but not hurt too badly. None of her armours may allow her to fly like Mirajane can, but since this armour's focus is offense over defense, it's much lighter than her usual gear.
"Photon Slicer!" Pointing the tips of the swords at Mirajane, Erza's weapons let loose an almost blinding beam of energy that flies towards the other woman.
I take a certain pride in having the right icon for the right situation x3
"Demon BLAST!" Mirajane fired the dark beam of energy into Erza's brilliant beam of light, the resulting explosion causing a loud sonic boom that shook the trees and knocking leaves off. Fortunately the blast of their respective energy beams meeting was high enough in the air that it didn't destroy the forest around them in the resulting explosion... but it did send Mirajane hurtling from her airborne assault.
Using the cover of the explosion, Mirajane dived beneath the residue energy it with a swoop of her black wings, planning to grab Erza by the leg and slam her down into the earth. It was probably a slightly bold strategy, but it would allow for her to buy the time she needed to switch to one of her other forms that might be stronger against the armor variation Erza had chosen. A grin found its way onto Mira's face as she reached for Erza, a peculiar looking dark energy gathering in her hand.

What she doesn't anticipate is that her opponent would grab her rather than striking. As a result, she's sent hurtling towards the ground. While in mid-fall, she shifts to her rabbit outfit - an unorthodox (and silly-looking) choice, but the sheer amount of padding helps to cushion the landing. Once she hops to her feet, she changes again to a more battle-appropriate rabbit armour as she glances around for any sign of the white-haired demon.

She watched Erza hit the ground, but giggled almost girlishly, even her demon form, when she saw Erza's big fluffy bunny suit. It was a bit of an unorthodox strategy, but an effective way to make it so she wasn't twitching in a crater. Mirajane knew it would only be a moment before she recovered, and while diving in to try to keep pressing Erza might be effective, and decided to use stealth. Erza was quite familiar with most of her demon forms from all the times in the past they'd competed, and from other little skirmishes they'd had, but she wasn't sure if she was prepared for this.
...
Mirajane was gone. Birds chriped, crickets chirped, cicadas buzzed, frogs croaked, but Mirajane was nowhere to be seen or found. Had she used some form of stealth demon? Some light bending magic to create the illusion that she wasn't there? Perhaps she'd flown high in the sky or buried her way underground? Erza was known to be prepared for almost anything, so she wondered how she'd prepare for this? Her magical signature was so faint it would be rather difficult to detect even for a specialist, looking more to blend in than gather power for an attack. Her attack on Erza would be a minor thing at best, but was planned to catch her off guard enough to provide her an opening.

Knowing Mira's sense of humour, Erza suspects that she might have taken on the form of something that preys on rabbits - a fox, a snake, a hawk, or something of that nature. Unfortunately, rabbits have a long list of predators, so keeping her back to a tree, her eyes dart around for a white tuft of hair, big blue eyes, or anything else that might be a sign of Mirajane's presence. The tree might not provide much protection if Mirajane goes for an all-out assault instead, but at least it would make it harder to sneak up on her.
...Unless Mira is disguised as the tree! She glances back at it, but shakes her head - that sounds outlandish, even for them. Still, her eyes wander all over the place, as her suspicions have been raised - could she be coming from the air? Under the ground? There were too many options, and she doesn't like waiting for very long.

She'd done an absolutely complete takeover this time, no signature tuft of white hair, even making herself dizzy with the change of eyeballs, but what might give her away if Erza was very keen with her listening was the way the frog's ribbits seemed very close to... chitters. It also was tensing up its body as if ready to pounce, but there weren't any flies or bugs or any other prey a frog might be trying to leap to. Spotting one bit of wildlife acting strangely in a forest? That was probably a little tricky even for a transformation mage in tune with what was going on, but Erza was known for being highly perceptive.
The moment the acorns began to fall on Erza's head, almost prompting her to look up, that's when she'd change back into her Satan Soul and crash into Erza with a thunderous blow, making the tree shake with the force of it. Oh there was still the possibility that Erza might have caught onto her plan, in which case Mira likely would punch a great big hole in the tree trunk instead, but she had to take certain gambles if she hoped to get anywhere with taking Erza down. She was physically stronger than Mirajane was, so most of her attacks needed to be well aimed surprise attacks, or magical based ones. Going in close to try to pound into Erza was undoubtedly risky, but it was her best chance of making sure the attack would hit, and do sufficient damage.

Mirajane slams Erza into the tree, embedding the knight into it and leaving her gasping for air. For all of Mira's talk about how she wanted to get stronger, that still hurt like hell. Erza had gone into this with the mindset that Mirajane had been trying to get back into the swing of things, and that she could treat this as a friendly spar. However, her old rival was going all out, so why shouldn't she do the same?
A sinister glint makes its way to Erza's eye, and she transforms into her Heaven's Wheel armour, which causes dozens of swords to hover overhead. With a yell, the swords rain down around Erza, her magic summoning new swords as the initial volley is used up.
If Mirajane backs off in time, then Erza will pull herself out of the tree, switch to her Purgatory Armour, and swing the massive club-like blade with ease as she lunges at her training partner. What the armour lacks in defensive capabilities was made up for by the sheer speed and power that it granted Erza (at least, in theory - in practice, it tended to be broken before that could be demonstrated). If Mira stands her ground, she'll continue the bombardment until she can force Mirajane off of her.

"Oh shi-" Mirajane barely had time to try to fold her wings over herself in some sort of defensive postion before a rain of swords bombarded her, much the way Erza had taken on Acnologia himself. Now this was the Erza she feared, respected, and had been hoping to battle all out with, but at the same time she'd also hoped she could take her out before she realized she needed to. With a sharp breath, Mirajane did her best to counter the rain of swords with her demonic magic, blasting the swords off of her with a dark aura, but her wings were currently too crippled to fly away, a nasty gash through both wings where swords had managed to actually pierce through them and even dig into Mira slightly.
Erza had gotten the reprieve she desired, Mirajane thoroughly distracted keeping herself from being turned into a porcupine. She took a quick glance Erza's way, trying to make sure she could keep up with what Erza's endgame strategy was, because she knew just as well as Mira that she'd eventually navigate the flurry of blades to take her on. That's around the time she noticed her re-quipping and Mira cursed under her breath. The bombardment did stop, but this was a very powerful close range armor from what Mirajane could tell, and whether Erza knew it or not, she'd successfully crippled Mirajane's means of flying away, something that would take time to heal and that a mere transformation wouldn't easily fix.
"BRING IT ON ERZA!" Mirajane screamed as she charged back in, blinded by pain, fury, blood lust, and dammit... fun. She should have anticipated this was her purgatory armor, she'd never faced it herself, the highly powerfully defensive and offensive armor being something the mage had obtained after they'd stopped dueling one another, but she had heard whispers about it. She slammed her demonic claws into the heavy black armor, trying to rip it apart, but her melee attack did little if anything to dent the impressive defenses provided to her. So taking a page out of Natsu's book, she powered her punch by propelling it forward with her dark magic, weaving a flurry of blows that Erza would need speed, power, and accuracy to match.
If Erza could catch a glimpse of Mirajane's face right now, there was a hell of a grin on it.

"You're going down, MIRAAAAAAA!!" The redhead notes, with a small sense of pride, that Mirajane isn't going to be as mobile as she once was. However, the downside is that she'd need to be much more attentive now that Mira's up close - a few slip-ups could be the difference between victory and defeat.
When she's not swinging it, Erza tries using the Purgatory Armour's weapon as a shield, but it isn't long before she abandons this line of thought. After it takes a few blows, cracks are already starting to show, and it's clear that the weapon won't be able to withstand much more damage.
With that in mind, Erza tries to avoid the punches more often. The Purgatory Armour may cover up more than her other outfits, but if Mira's enhanced punches could damage her weapon, she might not want to risk taking too many blows to the armour. Mirajane gets a few good hits in regardless, including a blow to the face that leaves Erza's nose bleeding.
She tries to keep on the offense as well, but her weapon is an unwieldy one, and it isn't long before a missed swing leads to some of the fang-like spikes on the side being jammed into the ground. Rather than trying to pull it out and wasting precious time, she releases her grip on it, shifting to fisticuffs. Punching was faster, and in a situation like this, landing a punch just felt more satisfying than the alternatives.

With her fists starting to suffer too much damage, Mira changed things up by throwing in the occasional spiraling kick and the slam of her tail at Erza's defenses, until finally Erza discarded her brutalized weapon and punched Mirajane square in the face. Mirajane reeled for a moment from the stunning blow, and then... she laughed. She laughed through the blood, tears, and pain, giving it her all despite the fact that her knuckles were covered in blood, some of it her own from punching the razor sharp edges of the purgatory armor, and some of it Erza's from blows she was actually able to land. She hadn't expected things to turn into a slug fest, where the two of them were trading punches so hard and furious that boxers would wonder if they were out of shape.
She pounced at Erza planning to headbutt Erza, bloody face smashing into bloody nose. If Erza didn't lower her head to accept the blow head to head, she could risk a broken nose, and if Erza tried to dodge it she'd leave herself more vulnerable to the uppercut Mirajane was attempting to throw into the girl's gut, to knock some wind out of her. She wasn't going to let up, not this time, she would take all the damage she needed to try to take Erza down, so long as she could take Erza down, that would be victory enough for her. Of course... she might get taken down in the process, but she hoped the aggressiveness of her attack would make Erza buckle first. If Erza did risk the broken nose, Mirajane's entire left side was wide open to any form of attack from a right hook to a roundhouse kick, but her old fighting instincts told her that Erza would play more defensively.

At this point, ideas like "retreating", "changing tactics" or "summoning weapons" weren't even on Erza's mind - backing off from this brawl would be like admitting defeat, and both of them were too hard-headed or stubborn for that to happen. Speaking of which, Erza decides to make this head-to-head literal, mirroring Mirajane's headbutt with one of her own.
Their heads collide, and while Erza's ears are ringing from the impact, a punch to the gut takes her breath away. Wheezing, she returns the favour in kind, standing her ground and aiming a crushing blow at Mirajane's stomach. By now, she couldn't afford to let up until Mira gave in or she didn't have the strength to punch any more.

She was about to hop into another attack when Erza's retaliation hit her like a bolt of lightning, making her wheeze as the air was forcibly pushed from her lungs. What a sucker punch! Mira growled through the pain and did her best to continue her attack, not using a punch this time since she figured Erza would be expecting that, but instead going for a roundhouse kick followed by a tail slap, trying to knock Erza over and to the ground. If she could manage to get Erza down on the ground she could then take the moment to fire a blast of dark energy right into her face. If Erza was strong enough to withstand the force of the attack, it would mean Mirajane would be at a disadvantage, her leg and tail caught off balance, and likely it would be her who'd be sent spiraling to the ground. Getting smacked down to the ground wasn't the worst thing that could happen to her, but Erza could likely dive in to a jumping kick or pummel her with swords if she could think clearly enough to do so.
Mirajane went for the all out attack, if it succeeded she'd gain the upper hand, and if she failed she could accept the blow, roll with it, and leap back up in a different form. It was risky, so very risky, but risk was called for when the odds were completely even. She hadn't used the demon form she was thinking of using in almost half a decade, so she wasn't sure how well its capabilities would hold up, but it was something she thought would be her best bet if her current strategy failed her. She was after all, in a knock down drag out brawl with the scarlet knight of Fairy Tail.

Erza manages to block the kick, but she needs both hands to bring Mira's leg to a stop, leaving her wide open to be smacked across the face by the demonic tail. Spitting up blood, the knight is heading straight to the ground after a direct hit like that.
Assuming that her grip is strong enough, or Mira is caught off-balance, she'll drag Mirajane down with her. Once that's done, she'll scramble over to Mira and try to get some hits in. Otherwise... she'll have to prepare herself for what's to come; she's not sure how much magic power Mira can muster, but whatever she does, it's undoubtedly going to hurt.

"Not over yet!" Her wings were still damaged, but a flap of them was still enough to get her back in close with Erza to deliver another punch, cracking right into the purgatory armor with a loud clang that sounded almost like a gong, punching away at anything she could get her hands on. She could barely feel her hands anymore, and she wondered just how bandaged they'd have to be after this fight, but she didn't care.
A quick right hook sailed past where Erza's head had been seconds before, the fist whizzing by Erza's face with almost a small sonic burst. Rather than the thick tail of the satan soul, Mira opted to slap at Erza with large leathery wings now and then, her barbed tail being a bit more fragile. Erza's next punch would hit solidly, but Mira gritted her teeth and punched right back, trading blow for blow, with a grin even as she became bloodied and bruised. Erza was starting to get tired, she could see that much... she just wasn't sure how much more she could take.

With both of them down to their last vestiges of magic, this friendly sparring match had become a contest of endurance. For every blow that Erza landed, her rival got one in as well; dodging was forgotten as they simply tried to outlast one another. Both of them would need a while to heal after this, but the bigger concern in Erza's mind was winning.
Her movements were becoming more sluggish, but Erza could see that Mira's movements were slowing down as well. Neither one of them had much energy left, but Erza's mouth was still curved upwards in a small smirk; no matter the outcome, she's glad to have her old rival back.

"What's... the matter... Erza? Can't... handle... the heat?" Mira taunted Erza through a series of steadily slowing punches, exhaustion setting in after they'd been punching each other for so long the sun was already starting to set. Didn't they start this duel in the morning? Mirajane wheezed as another blow hit her in the gut, and she retaliated by smacking at the right side of Erza's head with a heavy blood caked fist.
It was almost over... she could tell... she wouldn't be able to handle another good solid punch. She might be able to take a smaller hit, but if she focused her power, Erza could probably send her sprawling and Mirajane wouldn't have the energy to get back up. Mira made a gamble that Erza was in the same sorry state that she was, and so with the last of her energy, she ducked her head and barreled headlong at Erza. If she hit, Erza would probably go down with Mirajane on top of her, so it was sort of a win. If she missed? Well Erza could probably just walk over to where Mira had fallen on the ground, plant her foot on Mira, and claim victory. And if by some miracle Erza had the very same idea that she did? Well they'd probably just collapse on each other... sort of an anticlimactic end to such an intense spar, but it would certainly prove they were still evenly matched.

Even clenching her hand into a fist hurt, so without much in the way of options, she decided to charge at Mira with everything she had, letting out a fierce but hoarse battlecry. Mirajane clearly had the same idea, and the sun draws closer and closer to the horizon as the distance closes between them.
The two of them crash into each other, but it isn't long before their legs give out. Erza lands on her knees, still leaning against Mirajane - in this state, she can't even lift her arms, let alone stand back up, and Mirajane looks to be in the same position.
Despite the abrupt ending, Erza chuckles at this outcome - at this point, that's about all she can do. "Just... like old... times..."
no subject
"Almost... but... with one... big... difference." Mirajane couldn't lift her arm, but she still had a tiny bit of movement in two fingers that weren't in a fist anymore. She had her hand slowly crawl up Erza's body, wincing through some of the pain and the monumental effort it was taking for such a small gesture. Finally, Mirajane managed to get her arm where she wanted it, draped over Erza's shoulder so that she was giving the other woman a more proper hug, and she finally smiled.
"I'm... gonna always be... your best friend." Mira almost was going to tell Erza she loved her, but she was afraid that maybe that wasn't the right thing to say here. She did love Erza, she was sure of it now, because there was nobody else she could go so all out for and still give a little more for, except maybe Lisanna and Elfman. Whether it was the love of friends or something else? Well that was hard to say in the haze of the battle'a end. No matter what though, she vowed from her on out, she was always going to be there for Erza, to push her to her limits, and to be someone she could rely on for anything.

Given how today went, this kind of sparring would probably become a regular thing between the two of them. However, for now, Erza was content to just stay here with Mirajane and rest for a while.
