[The recording is a bit of muffled static at first as she has to move her hand to hold the device better.]

Whoever you are, you'd better be ready for a fight. I'm not going down that easy. You can't just kidnap me and get away with it.

[There's a splash as she jumps from the pod into the water.]

In some ways. Yeah. It's different. Almost too different.

[It was disconcerting, honestly, she isn't sure how to wrap her head around it.]

There are many strange things here.

... However. At least people are helpful.

I think it helps that everyone has the same problems adjusting.

I'm not really looking for help. [She pauses.] In my experience that hasn't been a good thing. Being in a group only leads to pain. Either you get betrayed or it ends in death.

[It's a comforting world she comes from.]

I don't know, everything about this place is just...wrong. It's all normal.

And yet, you have one person you want to bring here.

[ Is her tone a little more stern? ] Sometimes, trusting someone else makes a difference. Trusting the right person makes a difference.

[ Then, the earlier calm tone: ] You should explore more, if you believe it's normal here.

AJ can't betray me, he's only two. He can't do things yet, but I take care of him.

[Or she did, but she will again. He's hers damnit.]

Trusting people doesn't end well. Either they will stab you in the back, or they'll die.

I'm sorry. I didn't know.

[ Pause ]

It happens, sometimes.

However, I would not be here at all, if I hadn't trusted the right people.

Finding those people is hard, however.

[She pauses.]

Yeah. It's hard. In my world it's gotten to a point where it's not safe either.

This is not your world.

So people are somehow better?

[She can barely remember what it was like before everything went to hell. All she knows is people that would hurt her or leave her to die.]

They just think they are.

I don't know.

[ Dorothy is trying to hold back judgement. She knows the world - her world - could be a cruel and unfair place. However, shutting everyone out never helped anyone. She had faith in only a few people, but that faith was there. ]

Probably. People don't usually realize when they're ...

[ Searches for the right word. ]

... when they've gone wrong.

I can only speak for myself. I would have been killed if I had been on my own.

That's the worst part. They think they're doing the right thing, but if you're not a part of the right thing, it's a disaster. It can be.

[It's honestly a miracle that she hasn't died yet, and with a baby in her care to boot.]

I do fine. I manage fine. I can take care of us.

[It's not clear if she's convincing herself or Dorothy.]

Some people can be part of the wrong thing. And make the right choice in the end.

[ She didn't ... like, or really dislike, Angel. But, she at least made the rigit decision when it came down to it.

Some people, however, failed to admit when they were wrong.

There was a long, awkward pause, before she finally said: ]

You don't have to trust anyone right away.

I don't.

But you can be willing to be surprised.

They're not really wrong, they're like me. They just want to survive.

[She knows it and can even respect it a little, but it sucks.]

Maybe I'm not willing to be surprised.

[She was, still a part of her was. Javi managed to nudge his way in, didn't he?]

Perhaps.

[ Survival was definitely a better motivator than power. ]

Why not?

I'd rather be surprised by something positive, than otherwise.

[ This is all said in the same even tone, however, so it's hard to tell how earnest she's being. ]

[She pauses a moment.]

Because everyone dies in the end. Getting attached is kind of a waste of time.

[ Dorothy is again, quiet, for an awkward period of time. ]

Unless I am destroyed, I will likely outlive everyone I know.

[ And murder is not uncommon in Paradigm. ]

That only makes those lives more precious.

I'm not saying they're not, but I've lost more people than you can imagine. People die every day thanks to the walkers.

[Her world just wasn't pretty.]

This is not your world.

There are no walkers here.

What makes this world different? People don't leave?

People tend not to die as much.

[ Just leaving was a different matter, though. ]

Huh. How lucky for you then.

[It isn't like she has anyone to die on her, after all.]

I don't know anyone here, and if I die, I die.
