Video | Early Morning
Oh, how interesting! [Someone has been poking around with her new phone. And accidentally pressed too many buttons, turning on the video function without realizing. Have a very-too-close close-up of her face! Also, like someone read any of the pamphlets or anything. She doesn't even realize one has money in it.]
I guess this is how this works. You know, for all I've spent trying to fix the Eluvian I have back home, I never really gave much thought about how it would work. And there isn't anyone around I can ask either, not like here. Not that there could be, just it would be nice. Still, the surface is so pretty! How does it manage to reflect anything...
[She will finally lean away from the communicator, laughing awkwardly.]
Hah, oops. I'm rambling. I always ramble when I'm nervous. I don't mean to, it just happens. I'll just...stop talking now. Yes.
[She fumbles with the communicator, eventually dropping it and the fall turning it off.]
Action | Throughout the Day
[Why anyone thought it would be a good idea to let Merrill wander around any of the cities unaccompanied or without some string to find her way is anyone's guess. She did pick up a map and she can be found throughout Genessia and other cities staring at it; sometimes it's upside down, sometimes she's not even looking at the map side of it. Yeah.]
How odd. No matter where I go, it always says that I'm "right here". But I know I haven't seen that street a second time. Unless I have and the bushes are moving on me. Can they do that here?

How odd. No matter where I go, it always says that I'm "right here". But I know I haven't seen that street a second time. Unless I have and the bushes are moving on me. Can they do that here?
Action
She wasn't the most welcoming sight. And her expression was... well. Expression or otherwise, her face always looked like it had lost a few fights of its own, between the beak of a broken nose and the scarring.
"You're holding it upside down."
Action
She knew it wasn't Aveline. If Aveline was here then that likely meant that Kirkwall had fallen to pieces. Plus, last she remembered, Aveline didn't have pointy ears. A city elf, then! Even after living in an alienage for years, city elves were still a major source of curiosity for her.
Then she actually heard what she said. Merrill looked back down at her map, and flipped it to its correct orientation.
But no. It still didn't make any more sense to her.
"No. No, I don't think I was. This is still wrong."
Action
Some people could still pick out her accent, somehow, after all the other cultures she'd mingled with. At least, that was the excuse given when someone called her Dalish after her vallaslin had been erased... they could have just known because she was, well, the Inquisitor.
Action
"Oh, but it is different from the wilds!" Merrill said. "I don't know which wilds you've been in, but all the ones I have have nothing like these buildings. I'm pretty sure I never walked on a proper road either. Unless we're counting ruins in that, too."
Action
The only place cardinal directions hadn't been relevant was in the bloody Fade, and this was not that! Nor was she about to bring up having been there in body... twice.
Action
She peered a little closer at Alleyana. The ears were definite signs of an elf, but the lack of vallaslin on her face made her think she was a city elf. City elves, in her experience, generally didn't know, or care, about the role of hunters among the Dalish. "And, no, I'm not a hunter," she answered after a second, finally remembering the question.
Action
She didn't assume this random Dalish was a mage, however. There were a lot of roles in a Clan besides hunter, Keeper, and the Keeper's students, and many of them didn't go roaming the country-side alone. Not that she'd be worried about it anyway.
"Look, it's not that complicated. A map is just a drawing of the area from above. See, we're here," she tapped one pointy finger where they were on the map. "If you wanted to go, I don't know, here," another tap, "you'd go two blocks -- that's the clusters of buildings between the roads -- ahead, and then go left one block. See how that works?"
Action
Merrill looked back down at the map when Alleyana continued. She nodded along with the explanation; it seemed so very straight-forward in theory. In practice...
"Yes, yes... That makes sense too. But how do you remember the directions after they've been given? I think that's where my problem's always been," she said. "But it could also be because there's so many things to see and do. Especially in cities!" If it wasn't battle or her studies, keeping on track and not getting side-tracked were the hardest things.
Action
Alleyana paused, and frowned slightly as something occurred to her, "You do have somewhere to live, right? You can't just pitch a tent in a city." Not that she seemed to be carrying one.

[Action]
It might take a little while due to Koishi's unconscious nature, but Merrill might begin to feel someone tugging on the back of her shirt.
"Miss? Hey Miss! Can you see me? Can you hear me? Hey!" It was always like this! But absolutely worth the effort.
[Action]
To say she's startled is a bit of an understatement and she jumps a little when someone tugs on the back of her shirt.]
Hm? Is someone there?
[She looks back over her shoulder, trying to see if she can see the person. It's...strange, really. She's sure she's seeing someone, but almost as if they're on different planes or using high levels of magic she can't detect.]
I don't know what entirely you're doing, but I can hear you. Unless we're playing that game--oh, what was it called? [A pause] Hide-and-seek, yes!
no subject
Koishi drifted forward and booped Merrill on the nose. "Miss? Can you see me now?" Physical contact always seemed to help.
Koishi was a tiny thing, standing at only 4'2"... or would be if she was standing. Currently she appeared to be floating, her face framed with mint green hair and eyes that glowed green brightly enough to cast light on her cheeks in the dark. She also had a blue sphere the size of a baseball floating in front of her chest. Each side had a cord coming out of it which looped around her body and connected at her ankles. The slack, like the sphere, was floating of its own accord.
"My nature is unconscious so peoples brains have a hard time processing my presence... except children. They're good at seeing me."
no subject
She stared right at Koishi, finally seeing her properly. She smiled warmly at the youthful-looking girl. "But, anyway, it's nice to meet you, da'len. I've no doubts that children can see you best. Everyone knows they're best attuned to the Fade, after all."
no subject
She grasped the elf's hand, shaking it warmly. "Hello Miss! My name is Koishi Komeiji. I'm a satori youkai. And I've never seen someone like you before. You smell mortal and you kinda look human but you're quicker and you have adorable ears. I wish mine were like that. It gives your face a really elegant profile."
no subject
"It's just a word I haven't heard before. But, oh! Here I am rambling and not returning the favor. I'm sorry again! I'm Merrill. I'm an elf, myself. The ears give it away, really. Though most don't find them adorable, even if I always thought so myself. However, I also don't know what a... Satori youkai would be. Or if I said that right either. That's a language I haven't come across before."
no subject
She only brightened. "It's a word that means little stone. 'Ko' means little and 'ishi' means rock. And Komeiji means 'ancient bright earth!'" Certainly a flavorful name. "I've never heard of an elf before though. Where I live we have fairies and ghosts and gods and all sorts of youkai. Satori is the type of youkai I am. We're carnivorous creatures that live in mountains and protect people who respect it and live there and tell stories to travelers." And sometimes they eat people who are alone and frightened. But Koishi wasn't about to say that.
She paused for a long moment. "OH! I forgot. Not many people know what a youkai is. We're spirit, monster, demon... things..." Koishi scratched her head. "There isn't a good word for it in this language. So any of those work, really."
no subject
She paused, bringing a hand up her chin and tapping a finger against it. "I wish I could say Merrill means something, but I don't know what. Or if it does. How odd." Then she shrugged her shoulders and let it go for the moment. Even though she might spend tonight wondering if Merrill has a meaning.
"I've never come across a sentient creature who protected travelers before. Usually only guardians or spirits or demons. And they weren't nice. Or really protecting anyone either." She wasn't too surprised to learn that Koishi was a demon/spirit/youkai thing either. She came across things just as strange on all her trips to the Fade.
However there was something very different about her. "And I've never seen a demon or spirit outside of the Fade without them possessing a body. But you're not possessing anyone, are you? Usually there's a lot more screaming and rampaging when that happens."

Oooh, I love your tattoos, love. ...And what's an ill-oovy-ann?
Thank you!
And the Eluvian? It's a ancient mirror I tried to fix. But these phone things work so much better! At least, I think they do. As I said, I couldn't get it fixed so it's not like I can compare.

[And judging by Tracer's enthusiasm, she's more than willing to hear more about it.]

Who does healing or manages the demons in your world, then?

Re: [Video]
[She's genuinely excited about this. One of the drawbacks of coming from a low-tech world.]
How does it all work? I've never heard of "sound waves," was it? It sounds so fascinating! You humans come up with some amazing things. Oh, sorry! You don't have to answer any of that. Unless you know about it, then it'd be nice to hear.
