Winter's Super Fun Training Camp - Week Seven

WHO: Winter Schnee, Ted Satchel, Link, Navi, Hamusuke, Mael Radec, Eleanor Hume
WHAT: Winter's training regimen is nearing its end, now it's time for the recruits to head out on assignment to deal with some of the many problems facing Fayren. Will they manage to work together and complete their tasks in a week? Let's see!
WHEN: Saturday, December 24th - Early Morning
WHERE: Fayren - Training Camp

Instead of being sent out for their daily five-mile run, the members of Winter's training regimen were ordered to line up. It was freezing outside, but what else was new? Winter approached with a series of envelopes.

"Today you will be paired up with a random partner, and given an assignment, the nature of which will not be revealed until you choose an envelope." Her lieutenant passed out small manila envelopes, each one containing a letter: A, B, C, and so forth. Those with matching letters would be made into a team.

The teams and assignments were as follows:

Team A: Navi and Ted
A rash of thefts have struck the homes of Fayren's richer residents. The culprits are a tribe of bandit halflings, wily and tricky. They're exceptionally good at laying traps to ensnare people who try to track them down, and making fun of those who get caught in them.

Team B: Eleanor Hume and Hamusuke
A young blue dragon, capable of breathing forks of lightning, is abducting children from the outlying farms. Rescue the children. How you deal with the dragon is up to you.

Team C: Mael Radec and Link
A nobleman of questionable character will be arriving in town tomorrow with intentions of wooing the princess. Investigate him to make sure he's who he claims to be before he is permitted into the castle. (A thorough investigation will reveal that he killed the true lord and assumed his identity; he's an aspiring sorceror responsible for torching elven villages and trying to stir up contention between the monarchy and the elven tribes.)

[OOC: I won't be running the NPCs unless requested; I'm a lot slower and it might be a while until I'm caught up enough to give boomerang tags. Feel free to run with it and have fun! They have until Friday, December 29th to complete their assignments ICly, but there's no OOC limit. If it's taking too long, feel free to send an OOC summary so Winter knows how things went. Trainees can assist other teams if they complete their jobs early, and may also call on other characters for help if they're having a tough time! There's a thread for each character. Winter will be available via communicator and will assist in case of an emergency.]

Navi wasn't sure if it was a good thing to leave Link be, especially involving with a princess. As instructed, she was assigned to a bandit of halflings, which sounded similar to a Skull Kid case. She floated over Ted's shoulder, waiting so patiently.

"I'm ready when you are Ted."

So the all-girl team gets the dragons. It's like Winter's trying to spite him. He looks at the others with a look full of wistful jealousy.

"Some people have all the luck, eh?"

[Then, as quickly as it began, his mood goes back to its usual cheer. Hopefully Navi wouldn't be too upset about being pried from her charge.]

"Then let's not waste time! I've done a fair few bounties myself, so this shouldn't be dissimilar. Granted, I've never had to apprehend an entire tribe; suppose if we get the valuables back, that'll be about as good. All right; let's do the usual and interview the victims. See if we can't learn anything."

The victims didn't inspire much sympathy, for their residences were rich and opulent, and the thefts didn't seem proportionate to their discomfort.

"This is the hired help? A jester and an overgrown firefly?"

Such was the common sentiment among the interviewed rich. He could imagine why; knights in shining armor usually wear...armor. Ted found the insult moderately funny anyway and proceeded apace. At least now he wouldn't feel bad if they failed to bring them in; indeed, Ted almost found himself agreeing with the rascals in spirit. But theft is theft, and justice is justice.

"A roving band of vagabonds, then, always on the move. None too tall, either, though I think we knew that already. Let's see if there's any-"

A rock dinged his head, followed by light laughter as Ted caught a skittering of little feet out of his periphery. A halfling! They must've overheard.

"Come on, this way!"

Without waiting, he followed after the sound, running to a narrow alleyway. Another sound soon followed: the slamming of a door. A small warehouse, by the look of it. It had shut so strongly that it creaked back open again, which Ted took full advantage of.

No sooner had he rushed in than the door closed, fastened, and locked. He fell for the trick, one of the oldest tricks in the book.

"Heeheehee, what fools! Oh, we're gonna have some fun with you lot, mark us! Catch us if you can, imbeciles!"

Ted couldn't help but smile as they merrily made their escape. Looks like they were going to have a time of it.

Navi didn't mind so much what Ted thought. A job was a job, and she planned on aiding whether he liked it or not, it was her role to guide. Though it did questioned her whether was Tel jealous of the job offered or simply his companion wasn't a human female. That thought probably indicated a vain pop over the fairy's glow.

Regardless, the fairy agreed and followed Ted for some interviews. Of course there were comments made about them, which made the fairy fluttered her wings annoyed. "I'm a fairy!" Navi would spoke, correcting them. Noble or not, it was plain rude.

During their investigation, they finally made some progress when one of the halflings threw a rock to Ted. The fairy looked to where it was thrown and there they were. Without a second thought, Ted followed them and so did the fairy, behind.

"Ted! Wait! There maybe a trap!"

Whether Ted heard her or not, it was too late. Navi just made it finally to a warehouse where the door abruptly shut after Ted entered. Navi pounced on the door a couple times.

"Ted! You okay?"

Oh he's very charmed to have a fairy companion. It felt very natural; perhaps even supernatural. So long as she stayed out of harm's way, of course. He just wanted to sate knightly passions and go dragon slaying. Or at least dragon thumping. Now he gets to meddle with midgets, which is...well, it's more interesting than he thought!

"I'm fine, Navi, thank you for asking. Looks like they're as crafty as advertised, eh? Can you unlock the door, and if so, would you? Otherwise I'm afraid I might have to get rough."

Breaking public property would just break his little, conscientious heart.

Been there, done that. Navi had her tale of adventures with beasts and such back in her world. That was fun.

"That they are. They are worst than the Skullkids." Navi thought out loud. "Let me see."

The fun part, the door. Why couldn't doors open by themselves like some places? Navi drifted towards the and looked around. Even with a door knob, the fairy knew it wasn't possible. There was a low and drag chime before Navi spoke once again, discouraged.

"Sorry Ted, you'll have to do something for this one."

Right after she spoke, there was a sound of cackling behind the fairy, then followed an 'eeeep!' from the fairy.

"Skullkids?"

Why wouldn't they have time to talk about unrelated proper nouns in the middle of work? Ted's curiosity never rests. Darn, Navi, if only you had limbs or...appendages. How she passed PT he will never truly understand.

Looks like he'll have to think of something clever. Not usually his strong suit. Suddenly, he hears her cry, and dispenses with property concerns immediately. In a flash his shoulder and his foot meet the door with all the force he can muster. A few thuds later--unless the midget misfits have something else up their sleeves--it gives!

"Navi!? What's happened?"

Link will be so upset.

Navi has limb just too small, and strength requires turning a simple knob. Why do humans make things so difficult for the small people!!

Too bad for Ted, Navi would continue on the conversation to feed his curiosity, but atlas, the halflings indeed had something up their sleeves. They saw tiny glowing fairy, then came the sticky fingers of their's.

By the time Ted managed to budge out of the building, he would had found Navi on the ground, alive and floating only... stuck in a glass cup. If expressions could be seen from her, there was probably a giant sweatdrop on one side of her. Navi was unharmed just... was now a glow display. The fairy was displeased, if Ted could tell. The sounds of cackling echoed from the bushes.

"...I'm stuck, that's what happened."

Even her tone gave away her displease. At least it gave Navi an idea about them. "Careful Ted, they love to run around and get you when you least expect them."

A little too late to analyze that part Navi.

Ted knows just the small person Navi could sympathize with to share their widdle woes.

His concerns weigh heavily in favor of rescuing over vengeance, tending to Navi rather than chasing them through the bushes. Goodness, what were they going to do with her if they'd succeeded? Put a fairy in a bottle? Who would do such a horrible thing?

"Aheh, well, thankfully that's an easy fix." He grants Navi her liberty, removing the glass.

"Sorry; suppose we ought to stick together more closely, eh? All right, let's after them!"

He'd run off towards their retreat the moment she lift off.

Even if it was little trivial, it made navi felt helpless for a moment. She really wished she could do something in that situation, suppose she would have to find a way to counter that incident on a later date.

There was a relief of liberation when Ted lifted the prison glass from her. The fairy floated back up again to Ted's height with a happily chime. "Thanks Ted."

The fairy gave a good nod from her glowing body. "Right, that seems the best idea--!" And Ted was off, again. The fairy bobbled in the air a couple times.

"HEY!"

And off she went as well, following the wonders of Ted.

It did seem an awful trifle. All the pushups Winter made them do, and all for naught. It would seem brute strength wouldn't carry the day.

Ted's wonderful journey wound its way into the wilderness, with hardy old trees and springy young ones. The halflings, no matter how crafty, have strides half as long as his, so his speed made up for their cunning. Almost.

That is, until the path goes towards one dead tree in particular resting delicately, perilously on top of a young one. Ted bumps into the latter, loosing its tentative support and causing the old one to come crashing down. Will he escape unscathed? Maybe if Navi gives him a heads up...

Navi on the other hand, her agility was above average than any fairy she knew. This fairy could easily sprint through a forest and avoid any bumps on the way, a quick fairy. Keeping up with Ted was a simple task.

Then, of course, Ted had a little bump in the way. Navi watched poor Ted, then saw something ready to crash down. The fairy bounced in the air repeatedly with a couple chimes to warn the poor fellow.

"Look! Above you!!"

Hopefully she was quick enough to warn Ted.

A large, dull-brown mass came crashing down. Ted jerked his head up at Navi's Cry, then leaped back just as the tree smashed into the ground.

"Aww! Dumb firefly; thought we had 'im! Oh well; he'll fall for the next one!"

Ted was too relieved at what transpired to continue the pursuit just then. "Aheh, thanks, Navi, almost met my doom there. It really is terrific how one with no eyes sees so well; I'll be counting on you to serve as mine, all right?"

Fortunate, for Ted's observational skills were lacking. Were it not for Navi's guidance, he may have stumbled into a pit fall, or gotten tied up in a counterweight rope, or any of the other many, many devices designed to thwart them from the cunning halflings.

What he lacks in eyesight Ted made up for in agility, and soon enough, he closed distance to pounce upon the first unlucky halfling in his grasp.

"Got you!"

Ted dangled the mischievous creature upside down like he wanted his lunch money.

"Now cough up what you stole, or so help me-"

"All right, all right! Hey, Horster, jig is up."

"Nuts," said his partner in crime, kicking the dirt.

What followed was a patient walk back to the tribe's camp. Where they were all rounded up. "Don't worry," Ted tried to comfort. "While the rich are very possessive of their possessions, I'll try and put in a good word." He did, after all, have fun. Perhaps it was Ted's willingness to play their game that warmed him to the tribe. They were made to give all their ill-gotten goods, and despite for a few bruises, scrapes, and a missing tooth or two, all was well that ended well.

As they made their way back to Winter to report their success, Ted talked as though he hadn't had his life endangered by a tree.

"Wonderful work, Navi. Haha, where would Link be without you, I wonder?"

It was indeed a trivial day. The halflings were dealt with, the riches had their possession, and no one was hurt badly. Navi gave a good lecture to some of the halflings after they were caught. They got an ear full enough they would had wished the fairy would keep quiet.

Navi looked at Ted happily. "He would probably be chasing girls." Navi honestly blunt out. She really cared for Link. "Good job Ted!"

"What kind of defenses do you have against lightning?" Hamusuke asked Eleanor. Hamusuke had no defenses against the energy type.

"We could plan, that we could. I am tough, but not immune to lightning damage. It's good that the dragon is young. Older dragons have more power."

Link wasn't sure what to make of his newly assigned partner. But, helping a princess was something he was at least a little familiar with.

He hoped Navi and Ted were getting along okay.

[The Helghast Colonel found it almost awkward that his partner was a lot shorter than he was, standing at almost 7'0 feet.]

"So, Link.. you have experience protecting a princess? Seems like we both have some experience when it comes to protecting someone. I may have not protected a princess, but I protected a important figure on my world. But anyway, can you decipher who's false and who's real, Link?"

Link had to practically crane his neck to look up at him. This fellow was nearly as tall as Ganondorf.

"I got Princess Ruto out of Lord Jabu-Jabu's stomach. And I'm still on my super-important-mission from Princess Zelda."

The boy hesitated slightly. "Well, I'm a pretty good judge of character...I think...."

Radec didn't hesitate to bend down to Link's height and stared him down "Tell me now, would you be able to fight this man if he wanted to kill us or this princess even if he looked friendly?

"You look like someone who is quick and fairy good with a sword, also look at the man's face, you must determine if this man is lying through his teeth or not."

Link instinctively took a step back from the man, unsure as to how he earned such a harsh look. Being stared down by a man roughly twice his height, even though he was stooping, was not pleasant.

"We follow our orders, and he doesn't get to even see the Princess until we feel he's safe. We probably should question the people with him too, to make sure they're on the up and up."

"Okay. You talk with the guy himself, I'll interview his people."

Link set about interviewing the men working for the nobleman. They seemed a little reluctant speaking with a child, but, Link was persistent enough they relented. He also had to state repeatedly he didn't know what an elf was and that he was a Kokiri.

After speaking with them, there seemed to be a lot of little things that just didn't seem to add up. Something was off.

Radec turned back to Link "Very well then."

Radec frowned and stepped toward the nobleman. Future or past, he'd have to solve this with some quick thinking of his own."

"Excuse me, sir. You seem intent on wanting to see the princess, right? I'm not a patient man. He stopped the nobleman's horse. "Let's make this clear right now, you are NOT seeing anyone without getting through me, got it?"

This man seemed rather suspicious for being joyfully in love with the princess.
