[he's standing in the somewhat cluttered now void. Though there's still limiteless black behind him. There is a sword on a stand at his right and he is in front of a panel full of switches and knobs and something that resembles a rusty old spatula mostly because it is a rusty old spatula.

There are also a series of electrodes attached to various places on his head and rigged to the console and also one on the sword.]

Good morning, boys and girls. Happy snow day.

Since it's about time to get things done, I'm conducting an experiment. This sword [he gestures at it] has been possessed by void spirits. I'm going to psychically communicate with them to figure out what exactly they want and perhaps even how to free them or even to free us. They tend to have rather detrimental effects to the psyche -- so I've heard, but not to worry. I've thought of that. [grins and taps one of the electrodes]

Keyed to detect any kind of psychic attack, these will deliver about fifty-thousand volts straight into my brain with enough force to sever the connection. Don't worry about me. I won't die.

[a pause]

But if I do, at least we'll get to see what happens when you die here.

[another pause]

Unless I regenerate in which case... spoilers. Hope I do a better job with the nose this time. Bit weird when it comes down to it.

[he takes a deep breath and lets it out]

Right.

[and he throws the rusty spatula so the machine hums to life and rests his fingertips against the naked blade. At first there is nothing-- though people with keen hearing might detect a high pitched whine that pitches higher and higher and there is the sound of breaking glass.

Then there is a hideous pop and he's thrown backwards out of frame as the console catches on fire, heat rippling through the room and other things boiling to flame too before the communicator falls and all is dark]

[River had been tracing her fingers along the door for heat when she heard Rose come in and then go out again. It was clear where the girl was going, so River didn't bother to look for her. Instead she just shouted loudly out:]

Doctor, we're here. We're coming in.

[When they open the door to start spraying, River braces herself for the flame burst that will come from adding oxygen to the fire, but she sprays as well, glad that she's got her binary lung system, even if she's not as good as using it as the Doctor is. But she keeps firing at the fire, until there's a path clear enough to get through. Then she shouts to Rose:]

Cover me!

[Cover her...]

[They better both help someone else is there to do just that because wife or not; able to withstand better temperatures than a human or not, there's no way in hell Rose is going to let someone else go through flames trying to save him, not when that has been the literal story of them from day one.]

[She starts to chase after River but gets pulled back by the hose around her shoulder, and before she can take it off --]

[There's the familiar windy, wheezing sound of the Tardis materializing very near boy and a certain sandshoes face quickly opening the door]

ROSE!

[Reaching his hand out towards her and she can see how he looks scared in those eyes]

Please. I just nearly lost you to a void, never again.

[She flushes, upset, clearly, but, wavers, and slowly nods, handing him the hose and mostly spent extinguisher.]

I'm gonna see if I can find another, and lead the fire department when they get here.

[Squeezes his hand.] I won't get lost.

Rose.

[Still holding her hand]

You're not going to put the fire out with these.

[And drops the extinguisher]

It's too massive already.

Do something!

[Hand clenches on his!] Don't just-- Give up!!

He's you! And if you don't know what to do, then I'm going in there too!

[River ignores the sound of the TARDIS, and the loss of Rose, and she moves quickly through the path that the two of them had made. She knows the fire department is coming and should be there soon, so if she needs to, River can make sure that the Doctor is safe until then.

But really, she can't blame Sandshoes for wanting to make sure Rose is okay, it's what she would have done as well. That's what they all do for the people they love.]

[there's more fire beyond that, but easy enough to avoid. As for him, there's no sign, but she may have to go deeper into the darkness]

[River doesn't bother to waste her breath calling out for him; she knows that all it would do would be to waste her breath. Instead she pulled out her torch and headed deeper into the darkness looking for him.]

[should she go far enough she should be able to hear the snap of electricity and maybe even see it as it arcs off them. He's lying on his back, cords lying about his head like he's a squid and staring at the nothing]

Lost and found, isn't it?

[for a moment River just took a deep breath and let it out slowly, leaning over him and looking for the connections to remove it. Her voice is soft.]

Oh you idiot. What could be worth this?!

[the electrodes aren't hard to find. The answer is easy to find but hard to say. He wants to tell her something about stars and missing them and the one that went out but is still there just dim, only all he can get out is]

Orion finds, waist of space. Lost in the darkness. The raven.

[a sparkle of electricity goes over him. Try not to get zapped]

[River puts together the bit about stars, but ravens don't mean anything to do her right now so all she can do is file it away for later as she dodges the sparks that move over him again. Gritting her teeth, River's hand flies to the shoes that she's wearing with her rubber-soled shoes, and she slips them one off, balancing on her other foot as she moves to try and disconnect one side of the electrodes from him so if nothing else she breaks the circuit running through him.]

Come on, Doctor. You're going to be alright.

Yes. [he smiles up at her and then frowns] No. Too wired. Why? [he claws an irritated and singed hand through his hair] Try again.

Definitely too wired, you silly man.

[There was some fondness in her scolding, and if there was a time for slapping, it would come later. But this time she pulled the electrode more firmly tugging it sharply until it came off in her hand.]

[a current flashees and he groans again. Dying would have been easier]

Grateful. [meaning thank you but close enough]

[River winces for a moment, before she reaches over and pulls out the other one as well.]

Thank me after I get you out of here. The fire department should be here any minute though.

[the most he can do at the moment is stare up at her, flinching or twitching every now and again. He knows he did something stupid, he tries to say with his eyes. Please don't smack him]

[River just reaches down and wraps one of her hands around his, and her voice is soft:]

I got you, my love. It's going to be alright.

[There would be a time for slapping later. For right now, it was more important that he was safe and well enough to slap after.]

[for now, he will allow himself to be gotten. Mostly because it's River, but also because he has no other choice]

Yes, and knowing it's me. I'd figure it out.

[Or someone would come and clenches her hand back]

Come on.

Yeah, you always figure it out, don't you? Never die without regenerations, or get yourself to the point where you would if not for me -- never evar I'm sure!
