[he's standing in the somewhat cluttered now void. Though there's still limiteless black behind him. There is a sword on a stand at his right and he is in front of a panel full of switches and knobs and something that resembles a rusty old spatula mostly because it is a rusty old spatula.
There are also a series of electrodes attached to various places on his head and rigged to the console and also one on the sword.]
Good morning, boys and girls. Happy snow day.
Since it's about time to get things done, I'm conducting an experiment. This sword [he gestures at it] has been possessed by void spirits. I'm going to psychically communicate with them to figure out what exactly they want and perhaps even how to free them or even to free us. They tend to have rather detrimental effects to the psyche -- so I've heard, but not to worry. I've thought of that. [grins and taps one of the electrodes]
Keyed to detect any kind of psychic attack, these will deliver about fifty-thousand volts straight into my brain with enough force to sever the connection. Don't worry about me. I won't die.
[a pause]
But if I do, at least we'll get to see what happens when you die here.
[another pause]
Unless I regenerate in which case... spoilers. Hope I do a better job with the nose this time. Bit weird when it comes down to it.
[he takes a deep breath and lets it out]
Right.
[and he throws the rusty spatula so the machine hums to life and rests his fingertips against the naked blade. At first there is nothing-- though people with keen hearing might detect a high pitched whine that pitches higher and higher and there is the sound of breaking glass.
Then there is a hideous pop and he's thrown backwards out of frame as the console catches on fire, heat rippling through the room and other things boiling to flame too before the communicator falls and all is dark]

"Yes, brilliant, just what I need to worry about: Amelia Pond, icicle woman. River's with him already, he'll be fine, but if anything happens to you-..."
He trails off at that, focusing on navigation. They can (and knowing Amelia, probably will) argue later, but priorities.
Anyway, she probably has at least a vague guess. If she was hurt even indirectly because of something he'd done...

River was with him. He'd be fine. Just like that, she was calmer. Well. About him. Now she was worried that she might not have fingers and toes terribly soon. Too bad she didn't share that shift in priorities with him.... But she did rest her head against him and close her eyes. Which could have been a terrifying thing... or a hint that she was less panicky.

It's certainly a bit alarming, seeing her wilt like that. He hurries his way back to the house, pausing just long enough to sonic the door latch open, and nudges the door open, making his way toward the couch to set her down.
no subject
Then she felt a change and wondered when she had gotten onto the sofa... and why were her fingers and feet starting to REALLY HURT?
no subject
He brightens a little at the reassurance that she has a good bit of that Amelia fight in her, still, grabbing up some extra blankets to bundle over her torso.
"Ah... stay here, Amy, keep talking, though, I'll just be in the kitchen a mo, miss the ponchos, did you?"
The Doctor bustles right off into the kitchen, followed immediately by the clatter of cupboards as if he's searching for something, and the tap running.
"We can wear them out again any time y'like, you know, what d'you say?"
no subject
"Do you even still have those ponchos?" she asked, because somehow knowing was important. HAd the ponchos ever really existed? She was pretty sure her fingers existed, they were starting to hurt so much that they couldn't possibly be imagined. "This one is the real one, right? For sure this time?" Except... except it couldn't be. There was a reason it couldn't be, but it was hard to think for some reason. But she needed to. There was something wrong. Something important. Something.... missing...
no subject
"Yes, quite real, well... probably, working on it, but don't you worry, we'll have it figured out in no time, just got to be careful until then, there we are, perfect."
There's a sort of sloshing sound for a couple of seconds as he's speaking--then he comes bustling back into the room with a basin, and sets it down next to the couch, where she can see it has what look like bags of water in it.
"Sorry, might not be comfortable, but it's important to keep your core warm, hold on."
He wastes no more time flipping her poncho up--then shoves a couple of the bags of apparently quite warm water under the poncho, resting on her torso, then flips the poncho down over them again and flashes a grin at her like everything's fine and it's all a load of fun.
"Wrap your arms 'round these, too, don't worry, I sealed them."
With that done, he goes to grab all the blankets within reach, tossing them over her, as well, to help trap that heat.

But this was real? But it wasn't. It hurt enough to be real but it couldn't be. Because... Because... "Because Rory isn't here..." she whispered, closing her eyes. She swallowed then opened them again. It was harder than she thought it should have been.
"Doctor... if this isn't our universe...what.. what happens if we die here. Do we wake up there? Where we came from?" Was that why Rory was gone...? Was he waiting for them at home?
no subject
"...wh.. ah... I-... no, Amy, it seems to be we... ...that there's something taken away, when we wake up, again. Dying doesn't send us back, it just... demands a price. ...I don't think we know how anyone goes back, yet."

"Whot..? ...ah... no, sorry, not-.. not this time, Amelia."
no subject
She made a vaguely rude noise at him, more asleep than awake by now.

The Doctor shakes his head, kneeling down to adjust the covers over her, and ducks to kiss her forehead. He'd have to do something about her nutrition, maybe have a word with River and her other friends about keeping her busy. He had a good guess about what was missing that was throwing her off kilter, of course, even if he couldn't really do anything about it at the moment.
And end?
