⚜ ᴛᴡᴇɴᴛʏ-sᴇᴄᴏɴᴅ - riding out the storm
WHO: Zeref and everyone else who was riding out the storm in Fairy Haven
WHAT: With the blizzard striking Fayren, Fairy Haven opened its doors to anyone in the city without access to shelter. It's day 3, and Zeref's getting cabin fever.
WHEN: January 4th, 2018
WHERE: Fayren - Fairy Haven
{ Mavis was officially the Guardian, now. A fresh mandate from the voters meant renewed responsibility, and even if helping those without shelter survive a storm was among the most obvious of responsibilities for a Guardian, that meant potentially many more strangers in Fairy Haven for as many as least four straight nights. Zeref had just started getting used to Mirajane's parties, thrown with Mavis' permission, keeping him up at night, but at least the partygoers were usually all gone by the next morning.
He was never actually trapped with others, before. Mavis' rule that only members of the Guild were allowed in the Master's Quarters upstairs - Zeref being the only exception - was still in effect, but Zeref couldn't stay cooped up in there forever. He needed to get out and stretch his legs a bit, but obviously, he still couldn't go outside. Fairy Haven's magically-sustained hearth was keeping the place warm, and immortality didn't make extreme weather less unpleasant.
Descending the staircase from Fairy Haven's second floor, black, fatigued eyes scanned the main hall. For a place that hadn't closed for three straight nights, it still looked to be in good shape. He could hear the wind howling outside, and the windows showed nothing but white; he couldn't even see Fairy Haven's courtyard in the total white-out. He was feeling hungry, however, and maybe he could at least find something interesting to talk about with those present.
This was the same person who left Alvarez for years at a time. He loved being here with Mavis, but being trapped in the same building for three nights was leaving him with a serious case of cabin fever.}

Action
She leans heavily against the door, fighting the blizzard to shut it close. Once it's done, she notices Zeref and offers him a bright smile.]
Hi!
[She's shivering a bit but her greeting is as warm as usual. It feels so nice to find him upon coming home. Better than that, it feels right.]

At times like this, she really wished that Natsu was here. Sure, it might lead to the situation in the guild being a lot less calm, but he could be a huge help with keeping people warm, or even helping to transport anyone who's lost or trapped through the blizzard to a safe haven. Erza had some flaming swords, sure, but those flames wouldn't last in this blizzard, and unfortunately, she had yet to pick up an Ice Empress Armour that would make her immune to freezing temperatures.
Spotting Zeref making his way down the stairs, she makes a beeline over to him. Given his normal behaviour, there definitely had to be a reason for him to come down here.]
Anything I can get you?

This is a song I'd like to dedicate to two of my favorite people in all of Fayren.
[Whoever those people were was left ambiguous, but perhaps Zeref might know if he listens to the song. There's a very soulful mournful tone to her song, her memory of the war with Alvarez still fresh in her mind... and yet the end of the song reminds of her of the hope she felt when she saw Mavis and Zeref seemingly reincarnated in a new life together. She hopes perhaps that a lesson was learned somewhere by all those involved, but she wasn't sure if humanity as a whole would ever learn the folly of thinking you 'win' a war.]
When will they ever learn? When will they eeeever learn. Thank you everyone, I'll be returning to the bar now if anyone needs anything.
[She walked off the stage with her guitar Mavis got for her, slung over her shoulder, and blinked in surprise when she saw one of the very people she was thinking of when she sang her song.]
Oh! Zeref! It's rare to see you downstairs.

Welcome home, Mavis.
{ He sounds a bit on edge, maybe even a little irritable. Being cooped up inside for three days was beginning to take its toll on someone who was used to spending weeks at a time sleeping against nothing but the cold, hard ground in the wilderness. }
Is it as bad out there as it seems?

When Erza addressed him, it would be clear that Zeref wasn't in the best of moods. He was considering stepping outside, even if only for a few minutes, to relieve the pressure, but that would let out all the warm air, and the frigid temperature wasn't the only problem; the winds were dangerously high, and there were total white-out conditions outside. Whether he liked it or not - and he really, really, didn't - he was stuck here.
Erza's outfit barely phased him; indeed, his eyes didn't drift lower than her face for even a second. Brandish, Dimaria, and Eileen all wore more revealing outfits on normal occasions and he never bats an eyelash. Either he's just really, really good at hiding it, or he's all but immune to the powers of Mashima-fueled fanservice, likely due in no small part to only having eyes for one person. }
... something strong. Preferably something that can help me relax.
{ And if that meant something with alcohol... so be it. }

But as Zeref listened to the song, it was hard not to know what it was about. 'Two of my favorite people in Fayren,' huh... Mavis was an obvious example of that, but him? The more Zeref listened, the more he thought about the war in Alvarez. It was true; Alvarez was a nation quite literally built on war. Its citizens were proud of that heritage, and the nation itself was prosperous, almost utopian because of it. But history is written by the victors, as they say, and much of Alvarez' prosperity was paid for in blood, and more often than not, it wasn't their own.
Mavis wasn't entirely unfamiliar with that, herself. History rightly regarded her as the reason her side won the Second Trade War, a conflict in Ishgarian history so bloody that it led to a treaty enforced by the Magic Council banning magic guilds from participating in any sort of international dispute between nations (a treaty that was conveniently ignored the moment Alvarez came knocking, as Zeref knew it would be). With Mavis' tactical brilliance, the war ended in her side's favor despite being outnumbered and magically outgunned. The rest, as they say, is history.
When the song concluded, Zeref is silent for several seconds. 'When will they ever learn' indeed. He wasn't going to bother justifying himself again, even knowing what he knows now about the future of the world. Hearing Mirajane's voice snapped him out of his quiet contemplation, though he's noticeably a bit less irritable than before, having heard the song.
Mirajane had talent. He'll give her that. }
I couldn't stay cooped up in there forever.
{ He chooses not to mention the song. She knows he heard it. He decides to leave it at that, unless she mentions it, herself. }

In the end? They were very much alike, and the fact that Mavis loved him, and he'd proven himself to be trustworthy in this world of Genessia? Well perhaps in a way she'd grown to love him too... much like a father in law, or a stepbrother, but she felt a genuine sort of respect for him. A respect that was certainly helped a great deal by meeting... the doctor. It was alarming how similar the two immortals could be, where one was cursed and the other wasn't human. When all was said and done, she'd lived through a world with Zeref and... she could forgive him for the past. The Doctor? He'd need to work a bit harder to earn her trust, never mind the love and respect she actually did hold for Zeref now.
What was important now? Zeref was saying he'd been cooped up, upstairs all this time. From her one or two experiences in Master Mavis' room, it was nice and cozy, but much lonelier most likely without Mavis. She offered him a pat on the shoulder and a smile warm enough to melt away some of the winter chill.]
Why don't I make you a nice hot bowl of soup? If you've been upstairs all this time you must be hungry! Hot soup is the best remedy for a chilly Winter's day!

Such a beautiful song! Well done, Mira.
[Mirajane said she sung it for two of her favorite people in Fayren. She looked at Zeref. Mavis wondered if it could be... them? She wasn't entirely sure. She just got that feeling it could be them. Even if the song was kind of sad... Maybe it was because the song was kind of sad and hopeful at the same time.
She took a stool at the bar.] Soup sounds good!
[It was cold outside but Fairy Haven felt cozy and homey.]

Thanks! It's good to be home.
[And it feels even better to hear him say them to greet her. How weird is it that he longed all day to get out when she waited all day to be back home?
She sweeps the snow of her shoulders and taps her boots on the door mat.]
Oh, yes! Hopefully it'll be over soon.
Re: /threadjacking happens
He didn't know much of her history, but it takes a lot get Seilah of all people to admit a sort of grudging respect, even if that respect was coupled with a seething hatred. Her empathy for him and her support of his relationship with Mavis, however, and her continued attempts to be friendly with him have convinced him that she too was worthy of his respect. For someone who was used to being alone (even in Alvarez), he was finding himself enjoying their company more and more.
Her suggestion caused him to visibly relax even more. He usually ate with Mavis, but... well, he was feeling a bit hungry. }
I think I'd like that.
{ Without waiting for another word, he headed for the bar... when he heard Mavis' voice. He turned to face her, his expression visibly relaxing at the sight of her, especially just after hearing that song. }
Two soups, then.
{ Zeref wasted not a second more, taking a seat next to her. }

When it is, I'd like to go into the city again. Just the two of us.
{ When her Guardian duties allow it, of course. }

That's a date.
[She says it jockingly, but the fact that it is actually true - it is a d ate - makes happier that she thought it would. Even if they've been dating for many months now, it's still as magical as it was at the beginning.]
What about tonight?
no subject
{ Zeref has fire magic, but he's not Natsu. But still, it does sound oddly romantic, being alone with Mavis out in the middle of a blizzard.
Gods, listen to him.}... alright.

I meant: what do we do tonight? Even if we stay here... [She blushes slightly.] we could spend it together, doing something nice. [Even if it's just playing Legenca or snuggling under some warm and fuzzy blankets.]

I would love that, Mavis. Shall we start now?
