Valentines Day is a celebration of the Roman Catholic Saint, Valentine of Terni.

It celebrates the day of his martyrdom, where he was tortured and then beheaded for performing marriages for soldiers, whom were forbidden from marrying, and preaching Christianity, as it was an illegal practice at the time of his imprisonment.

You have a point. Love should be shared no matter what the day is, but it's a good day to initiate things that wouldn't otherwise be as easy to do so. Is there someone you like but have a hard time expressing it, the mood helps a little to make things less painless. And even if you don't spend your time with a special someone, you can still celebrate it with friends and family platonically. You don't have to be with someone during this time of year, but it's always a nice plus.
