Babby's First Workbench

[The feed opens, and there's a teenage girl with purplish hair, staring curiously into the camera behind ENORMOUS glasses. Behind her is the familiar decor of Genessia public housing, and barely visible in the corner is an odd configuration of boards, cinderblocks and tools that any chemist, physicist or engineer would immediately identify as "That Workbench They Had in College That Was Cheap to Make, and Easy to Tear Down if They Got Kicked Out For Blowing Up the Place." Lucca had already been busy scrounging for those and scraps to take apart, as well as doing... other experiments, before she'd even gotten around to her tablet.]

--So THAT'S how the video feed works! fascinating... Oh, wait, that means it's transmitting now isn't it?! Ah, uh, hi! My name's Lucca, and I'm new here, although you probably already figured that out...

[She realizes she should probably open up discourse to help, you know, meet people, so she starts with the one thing fresh in her mind:]

Soooo are we really trapped here? What's causing the barrier? Does anyone know? 'Cuz it would have to be pretty powerful to stop... Well, to stop all of us from getting out.

Right okay, so there's this moon colonized by humans, but mostly used by bounty hunters, and has some major problems with mafia and all. On it there's a containment bubble, and no way to get out. Inside the bubble the weather is moderated to being comfortable, the water levels are, the farms are all bioengineered for perfect oxygen levels, luxury amounts of food, and that's why the city there is called New Vegas. If you're familiar with Earth United States' Las Vegas.

Outside of the bubble is death. Lack of oxygen, frigid hell, and no life. Bit like our moon, but without the beautiful crater seas. This moon just had... nothin', you follow?

So my question is, what exactly are you so eager to get out for that you'd willingly endanger hundreds of thousands of people's lives who didn't sign on for your suicide runs? Because if it's just curiosity; here's a thought: Don't.

...okay, okay, I get the point. I wasn't necessarily going to just crack open a hatch and take off!

[She would have at least sent a robot in first.]

Is it really that bad out there?

Uh-huh.

[No, that's even worse, Rose would then go on to explain how a dying justice robot merged with a not-completely dead corpse-person and then went on a crazy death rampage inside the bubble.]

Honestly, I have no idea, I haven't been. Yet, if ever. But usually when people tell me the outside is like the Cursed Earth of Judge Dredd, I'm not in a huge rush to ditch the cyberpunk city no matter how hellacious.

Annnnnd these cities are actually really really nice.

So... you don't know for sure?

[Sorry, Rose. She is, unfortunately, a scientist. Popular wisdom is just not enough for people like her. In fact, things that "everyone knows" are the things they place under the hardest suspicion.]

...I mean, you're right. I haven't been here long, but this city IS really nice. I'm just curious how this whole place is built, and what keeps it going.

I haven't been there. [Rose's bffs, significant others, father, and company are scientists, so she gets it. She's just Also crazy reckless and would volunteer in less than a heartbeat for a suicide squad mission outside the barrier if given the chance. Don't even ask about exploring the black hole.]

Those would be better questions to start with. Curiously, not many people seem to know the history, but I believe the existence is powered by belief. If your world has Peter Pan, it's like that.

I kind of get it? I've seen similar things back home, but I didn't have time to ask any further back then.

I hear that. Everything's always running, it's weird not to have your wheels still on fourth gear, huh?

Yup, we're really trapped here! [Cheerful smile.] Oh, but it's not bad here at all! It's a really, really nice place, once you get to know where things are. I don't know much about the barrier, but at least it's not keeping us in a very dangerous place!

The place IS pretty nice, yeah.

[She answers with a sheepish smile.]

I'm just curious about the big picture, and how this all works. Like does the barrier require power to stay up, and where exactly we are and stuff.

[And why the timeline is so marred here that any Gate she makes throws her unceremoniously back out on her butt...]

From the sounds of things, I'm not the first one to ask questions like that.

I'm sort of curious about that stuff, too! But there's been a lot of people asking these questions, and I don't know if anyone really has a definitive answer to any of that!

[It's entirely possible she's just not asking the right people the right questions.]

That's one way of putting it, and a negative one at that. No more than a painting is trapped by a portrait, I'd say. I'd need more evidence of your benevolence before answering the others, haha.

Let me guess; someone tried to mess around with the barrier before and screwed everything up. Don't worry, I'm not gonna try that. In fact, I just wanna know where they're getting all the power to keep it going!

Purportedly it's powered by the fear given off by Everglade, a certain sinful city, but...well, their emotions are either nonexistent or of a different caliber than ours entirely. I don't quite understand it, myself, but apparently passions can be a power source. Who knew?

You'd be surprised what you can use as a power source. That sounds kind of cruel, though!

[She may sound like a Judgey Judy right now, but she hasn't seen Everglade yet. She's also see enough exploitation of one people for the benefit of another that she can see that particular spectre where even where it needn't be.]

They're not inducing that fear just for the sake of power generation, are they?

Aheh, the acoustics have not misled you. It's certainly not kind.

[None are more judgmental than him, apparently!]

"They?" Well, I don't think the rest of the world compelled them. Eighty percent of Genessia certainly don't seem to mind, though. The fear comes...well, it has its natural sources, as given by any danger duly regarded. It does tend to attract the more intimidating and unscrupulous among us.

It's a rough situation, all told. No one asked them to be the world's sacrificial lamb, but then they seem to have no problems inflicting their own miseries on themselves. Whether security arising from the turmoil is an accidental boon or self-fulfilling curse remains to be determined.

[She's going to go with "curse."]

We can figure out a better power source than that. If nothing else, I'll find one myself!

[He likes that optimism.]

Ahah, truly? You've some genius with emotions and energy and that sort?

Yeah, we seem to be pretty stuck in here. I don't recognize the power source for the barrier myself...

[She is peeking at that workbench.]

Aaare you making something~?

Huh?

[A quick glance behind her at the workbench.]

Oh, nothing specific yet. Just getting some equipment together, making some servos and sensors, things like that. I'm an inventor, there's a lot of stuff to get together before the real work starts!

That's so cool! I like making stuff too, but I'm not nearly as prepared as you are...

Oh! And my name is Satou, by the way. Guess you're new here?

Yeah, just moved in. I figured if I'm here for a long time, I may as well set up shop. This is just the first day's work.

Sooooo what do you work with? Wow, the only other inventor that I knew in my world and time, was my dad! This is really cool!

Magic!

[She's sparkling with excitement. More 'makers' means she can learn more techniques!]

I can make anything with my magic, if I have the materials and the logic for it. And I got pretty good at making stuff when I was homeless~!

That's incredible! Most magic is just elemental-based in my world, but synthesis of different pieces was a technique that they used in the past! Kind of like a dead art, in a way.

You gotta show me your version, sometime!

Yeah, definitely! I'd love to see what you're working on, too. When two girls combine their powers, they become a force to be reckon'ed with!

[Well then, this girl looks almost familiar and at the same time probably from his world, it was hard to tell.]

It's powerful, surprisingly, but it also keeping the strange monsters out.
