Basically. But they're gates. Tears can be natural and usually aren't stable. These are maintained with a sacrifice, sometimes of memories or abilities, or vital organs. That is also how they revive your corpse if you die here.
And the gates do go back to people's homes. Hell, France, New York, that pegasus world, or the magic one for Mirajane; all where people were before here.
You're forgetting the time discrepancy between universes.
Each universes happens because of different choices made, and that then ripples outwards. I almost caused a paradox in the one I was born by rescuing my Dad. Hell of a headache.
So you can absolutely go back home, but it doesn't mean you're in sync with that universe. You can't change it, or you'd create new universes and the gate would collapse. So the gates, [Holds up her pendant.] And this that they give to travel between 'em, lets you go all those places. But it also maintains the neutrality to keep the gates and the universes, stable.
You can go back, you can see other universes you've never been, but you don't then become part of that other universe's timestream now.
And can you imagine? There's dimensions that are just two-D. You could really screw yourself over trying to become one with that!

Standard 5th dimension stuff. You're in it, you can buy stuff and bring it back here, you can go travel, explore all of it, but try to change anything too big and it would collapse.
And you can't find people you love who aren't here. You have to go back into your living memories for that. Which they do in Nova, but don't expect to enjoy it. Most people don't have the happy endings they deserve.

Forget about trying to go back home for a bit, and treat yourself. Act like you're on a new adventure, and you can go sight-seeing and do just about anything you would back home, yeah? Except with less stress and worries, and way more possibility to have fun. Go see a movie from another universe, meet people, travel the sights. Learn magic, try some really weird food, make friends! It'll be fun before you know it!
