[Yuuki hadn't been here for long, but the moment she had stepped put of the Bay into the city, she had seen the damage that had occurred to this place and people who were just trying to tidy up and rebuild what was lost. It wasn't long before she used the device looking quite concerned.]

What... happened here to cause such damage? [She looked over her shoulder slightly as she soon nodded.] I'll be over in a second... Ah, I think I might need some help carrying that. [She turns her focus back towards the device.]

Anyway, I'm Yuuki Cross, I was part of the disciplinary committee back home, but I don't think that is something that works here. [Considering her job with that was to keep the Night Classes secret, she doesn't think that applies here.]

Ah, I offered to help clean up, but I can't help them carry rubble the sizes they are trying to get me to carry, so if you want to help I'll be happy for it. [She gives a small smile before switching off. Back to attempting to be nice and help out.]

[She nods slightly, strength of heart she figured was a god thing.]

Then you must have seen a lot if you say you've seen many lives saved?

[She had checked to see there was no one buried before moving it a little distance.]

[He stops what he's doing and lifts his hand to "feel" anyone trapped inside. His eyes close, the black mist emits from his hand to seep into the cracks like feelers.

His eyes open and his hand lowers to look at Yuuki.]

I have. One person can make move mountains through impossible odds. Doubt once and it becomes a fissure, lost forever to the quagmire of guilt and remorse. Yes, I have been witness to these great things and I have faced three such people that have changed time to stop my own path of destruction from taking hold.

Have I atoned?

[He turns his head to look at the rubble.]

I am still searching.

[That was kind of deep. Yuuki paused as she listened to him speak, taking in the words that he spoke. When he was done she wasn't sure of what to say.]

At least you are trying to atone and that's always a start at least. ,small>[She moved her hands, and studied the rubble, finding just the right piece for her to move next.] I believe that you'll find it sooner or late never he less.

[He remains silent for a few breaths and without warning, a black mass arises from the cracks to reform into a body of an animal that was trapped and couldn't breathe. Caius wastes no time on words and presses his hand on the chest. Bones snap in place, he leans down to breathe into the snout of the creature.

The wolf-like animal springs up to its feet, shakes a bit and runs off. He remains kneeling until it runs from sight.]

She has pups waiting for her. She was here to hunt. Without the mother, the young will not survive. Her life was taken without a choice. I give those souls brought to me a choice. She needed to return home, and with this she chose her pups. She will die once they are old enough. Such is the law and the price.

[He stands up and bows his head.]

I am incomplete. I will find it and upon its discovery I must leave. Until then, I remain here.

[Hearing the bones snapping she covered her ears slightly. It was just a horrible sounds and one she didn't want to remember later. But she smiled slightly after it got up and ran off, uncovering her ears.]

So you helped her so she could take care of them... That's actually really admirable of you. [A pause.]

So if I get it right, you'll leave here after you find it, right?

An obligation to life and nothing more.

[He looks down the path where the wolf ran off and back to Yuuki.]

Yes. And only then will I return to sheppard the dead. Until then, I shall protect the living.

[She wasn't exactly sure what he meant, he Sheppard he dead? But until then he would protect the living. That just seemed odd.]

So... What is it that you do? I know you mentioned shepherding the dead, but I'm not quite sure I understand.

This world would know me as the Grim Reaper.

[Only he's a lot more than that. He's the balance between life and death though he doesn't judge the souls. That's Yeul's job. He stands up slowly. His powers reach beyond the scope of death but also time and memory as well. He remembers every soul, sees every sin and can change time as he sees fit.]

[And now Yuuki is suddenly nervous at the mention of the Grim Reaper.]

I-I see. That must be a... [What is the word she is trying to say here.] Tough job, I think I was trying to say.

[Immediately, he senses her trepidation and he takes a step back. Not that he is afraid of her, but rather he doesn't want her to fear him. No one should fear death but it's what people do.

With a quarter turn toward Yuuki, he keeps his distance visible.]

Only troublesome to those that do not wish to let go of their former lives. Otherwise, it matters little when comparing one to the other. Death should be made with peace yet both birth and death are traumatic.

Each newborn that cries, a life is taken to make room for the new souls. The cycle is infinite and should not be broken.

Oh... I would have never thought of it that way before. [Not that she would have problems with death in the first place as she knows it can happen to anyone at just about any time.]

So it's a cycle huh? But I never understood what happens to souls when they die? I mean they leave so new souls can enter, but what about the souls that have gone, do they go around eventually, or something?

Yes. They can be reborn as well. Some that choose to return for rebirth are given the chance to live again. Those that wish to stay, remain with me and become the energy for new souls to be born. The memories of the past go with them.

[He takes a step to the side and lifts his gaze to the sky.]

They are a part of another. Have you ever wondered why someone feels familiar to you when you have never met them before?

[Yuuki was quietly listening. It was quite an interesting thing she was learning about and it was something she was going to try and remember in the future. Though it did make her think of a question.]

I can't say I really did, but then again I've never really paid that much attention. But is that the same feeling you might get if you have forgotten your past from a certain age?

[He nods once.]

Yes. The soul is reborn in a new body yet the memories are latent. There is reason for this. Some souls have no memory of their past buried deep since they are wiped clean of their past lives.

This is a choice they make to atone for their transgressions before they can be born anew. Some contain their past memories and locked away until the time comes that they are able to remember again who they were.

It can be compared to spiritual amnesia. They chose upon their death what they wish to do. The term "old soul" is true. Think of it not as reincarnation but a rebirth. Death is only final to the body, but never the soul.

Oh, wow.

[She would have never thought of it this way at all, but now that it had been said it has given her a lot to think about at least for the next few days at best. She shakes her head slightly, she knew she shouldn't have been stopping just to talk, she wanted to help and she knew she probably should now.]

It was nice talking to you, but I am going to go and check who else needs help.

[He wastes no more of her time and steps toward the far side of the clearing. He closes his eyes then casts his face toward the sky with a calm expression. Many times in his past he gave his silent thanks to the world but this place seems strange. He lowers his head and lifts his hand and vanishes.]
