16th Healing | Thinking about Fathers [Video]

[ The video opens up to Konoka chilling outside somewhere in Fayren city. Her Umbreon Yuunagi is pacing by her side. She'd been pretty much on autopilot lately. Mavis's uncontested victory meant that she didn't really have to bother too much with the elections, and thus stuck to her usual routine of minding her store and calling out healing wherever she wanted. ]


You know what? Today's Father's Day.

It's not often we think about our dads as much... at least in my case. But sometimes I wonder if I don't give him enough credit. After all, he was part of the big group who first saved my world more than 25 odd years ago... before I was even a twinkle in his eye. But I know not all dads are great.

Despite achieving all that, my dad is still an idiot with a smoking habit. And I'm starting to miss him.


[ She gives a slightly pained smile for a moment, but then shrugs it off. Yeah she misses him. She misses a lot of her friends and family... Setsuna most of all. But she's at least confident that when it's all said and done, they'll still be waiting for her whenever Genessia feels like letting her go, however long that is. ]


Any of you think about your dads lately? Hero? Worthless jerk faces? Something in-between?

[ Aww. Was hoping for a little advice, but she liked learning about other people just as well. It would prove for a nice distraction, at least! ]

Genessia has definitely been a learning experience for me. It allowed me to approach things in a way I wouldn't have thought of on my own.

I am an adventurer. [ It's the best way she can describe the work she does for Sun Wukong's business - essentially the same thing she did back home, before being the Warrior of Light took up all of her time. ] I do whatever it is people are in need of.

I remember when I did that sort of thing back at home... well, in the same world as my home.

I'm a healer first and foremost. I help a lot of people and places from wounds, sickness, and other maladies. I prefer doing that for free, because I'm still an apprentice mage.

I do have a day job where I construct magical charms for people! I customize them for their needs, and sometimes make them look good.

There are a great many healers in this world. I am glad to hear that few seem to charge for their services. [ She had intended to offer her services when she first arrived, but seeing the abundance of healers around decided to fill in other roles instead. ]

What do magical charms do?

Yeah, I was surprised at how there's so many around. At least it makes my job easier!

My magical charms usually act either as protection, dispense spells a limited number of times, or they can create doubles of varying power of their user! Barriers, having a water spell on command, or make a little doll version of yourself that can fly around you and cast spells!

That is interesting. How are they activated? And is it difficult for one to learn how to make such things? I have a friend who may be able to benefit from them, though I would prefer to craft such vital things for him myself.

I think you have to be decent at calligraphy or the spell messes up. The ofuda that hold the magic needs clear symbols in order to correctly cast the spell.

I haven't tried doing it in another language before.

My preferred form of magic uses carefully drawn geometric patterns, so I am at least somewhat familiar with the concept. Does the wielder need to write or draw something to activate the charm?

What language's symbols do you use?

The wielder doesn't, thankfully. Last time I remember someone trying it with bad handwriting, it made a very big mess.

[ And that was some years ago, which made the trip pretty funny in retrospect. ]

I usually just use Japanese, a language from my home world.

How do they work? Do you put a portion of your own magical energy inside of them, then draw the symbol that will shape said magic to the spell you desire?

[ She wants to be able to make charms of her own spells to give to her friend whose magic was stolen from him. Shields, emergency healing spells, perhaps an elemental attack or two or three... Though she also wants to learn much more about these 'ofudas' first. ]

I am familiar with it. It is similar to Hingan in my home world.

That's pretty much how they go, yeah! I can supply some blank ones, if you know how to use them yourself.

Hingan? Hmmm, I'd have to check that out some time!

What of spells that you do not have a symbol for?

I do not hail from the continent Hingan originates, so unfortunately cannot provide you with knowledge of it. The lettering is very similar to Japanese 'hiragana'.

I pretty much just write those in Japanese. I just have to keep the intent in mind when I put the magic in... and hope I don't misremember or misspell anything.

My apologies for so many questions. I believe this would be of great benefit for my friend and would like to make him some charms, if possible.

Yep!

That sounds like a wonderful idea. Let me know how it goes, charms can do wonderful things... but also a lot of dangerous things, so people using it secondhand might need to have more caution with using it!

You said you had some blank ones on hand? Would I be able to purchase them?

He is intimately familiar with magic, so I doubt he would have too much difficulty. I shall keep it in mind though.

[ she leaves out the fact that she is very obviously not human. given that non-humans aren't uncommon in fayren she doesn't see the harm in leaving that detail out. ]

Konoka is not exactly tall herself, especially since she didn't bother with heels today. So she looks for someone around her size hanging around the front of her store, and sure enough...
