[Cassian and Kay's house is often lively and, while Kay is trying to keep what is happening behind him mostly out of frame, Cassian and some pokemon can be spotted.]

Does anybody know a good blacksmith that can weld my wedding ring into place? [Kay raises his left hand and sure enough, there's a white gold ring around his finger.] It keeps falling off because my frame's too smooth and I don't want to lose it by accident.

[Any attempts at seriousness are ruined when there's a yelp, a shout of] Galantea! Get back here right now! [and then there's a Sylveon wearing a tiny tuxedo throwing herself at Kay smugly crowing Sylveon! Sylveon! Cassian appears a moment later, plucking her from Kay’s shoulder. If you look closely, you can see a matching wedding ring on Cassian’s hand, worn along with the gunmetal-grey ring made of Kay’s frame he’s been wearing since Christmas.]

That’s it, you’ve been wearing this tux since the wedding. Enough now. [For his troubles, he gets his cheek licked– slowly and slobbery and with great relish. He finally notices the phone in Kay’s hand.] If you’re going to announce it, you might as well tell them we’ll be unavailable for our honeymoon.

[Mai was...taken aback. For several reasons.]

[Not because of the idea of Kay and Cassian getting married, specifically. That...from what she knew of the amorous pair, it was perhaps only a matter of time. Were one to be in the mindset of such things, and actually think about it. That was the biggest reason of all. She hadn't been. Until she saw their broadcast.]

[Though she supposed the legalities of it all meant very little. It was the sentiment that counted

We did, the other day after the election results.

[Why is it, even when talking about someone else's love life, Mai still gets the underlying feeling she's the one being (lightly) teased?]

[As they weren't particularly close, she felt no insult at not having been invited to any ceremony.]

It's just...it's been a while since I've heard about people getting to celebrate something like that. [This much, at least, was true. There was no time for weddings or parties when you were literally fighting to stay alive each day.] Not even back home, let alone here.

[ Aww. He's not trying to embarrass her this time, promise! ]

Thank you! It was a spurt of the moment thing but Cassina and I have known each other for more than a decade now so...it was a long time coming thing.

Ha, I see. We didn't invite anyone, I'm afraid, only those who live in the house with us as witnesses and the pokemon. But Weiss is also getting married soon and her wedding it's going to be a huge thing, I'm sure.

[ Cassian and Kay are just more discrete. ]

[It took only a second for the memory to click; Mai's mind had been in such a whirl, her first priority getting to Trunks and making sure he was alright. But she was first and foremost a tactical leader, and had done her best to pay attention to as much of her surroundings as she could.]

Then I suppose a grand wedding is just what she wants most.

Part of me would love to see it for myself, but I'm afraid I would feel a bit...awkward. Attending the ceremony of someone I barely know.

She worked a lot to make this world better for all of use, I think she also deserves a happy, special day.

And yes, that's understandable. But you can have your own wedding too, eventually. [ Just leaving this here! ] Or birthday party! those are fun too.

My birthday already passed, I believe. According to the calendar here, it was about two months’ ago.

Oh. But did you celebrate it back then? No one says you can't have a belated b-day party.

Not really. I'm not even sure I noticed, since it wasn't long after we'd arrived.

It's been...a long time since I've had a chance to celebrate.

See, then more reason to do it. I know someone who has a bakery and makes great cakes, her name is Orihime Inoue. She's a sweetheart too.

[And just how much is a promise like that actually worth?]

Two months is a bit too long, even for a belated celebration. I'll just celebrate the next one. Wherever I end up then.

Yes, we got married here. Right after my term ended. I realize it's unusual to marry here but there is nothing for us to return to. We will live here for however long we have, and when we are sent back to our world, we die.

[ Yay. So cheerful. He does want to believe in what Marco had said about seeing more worlds in their future but death back home is a certainty. ]

[Then again, Mai was perhaps one of the few who might be able relate; she was no longer promised death upon return, but up until a short time ago, it had been all but a certainty in her mind. So for someone else to want to grab at whatever happiness they could for as long as borrowed time allowed it....]

It's been a long time since I've encountered a newly married couple. The thought...never really occured to me. That it could happen here.

But I am happy for the both of you.

[ Cassian gives a curt nod. ]

It took me a long time to wrap my mind around this place being... Well, not a permanent home, I knew right away there was nothing for me to return to, but truly accepting it. Embracing it on its own terms instead of thinking and acting as if I were still at home.

[ Does that even make sense? He doesn't know how to find words for these long months in which he had only kept fighting the shadows of the war back home. ]

I know you and Trunks come from similar or worse circumstances. It takes time. Then you meet all these people here who have built new lives. Couples who have gotten married or are getting married, too. I never thought about it until my friend Weiss got engaged.

[It made enough sense to her.]

Do you think you'd feel the same way if you and Kay...did have a home to return to? Or even just the promise of one?

[ He drops his gaze as he tries to picture it. ]

I'm not sure. I know I would be restless to return. We're in the middle of a war, and people are relying on me. I left right in the middle of us trying to stop a superweapon which can blow up an entire planet with one shot. Even knowing we will be sent back to the moment in time we were taken from... I would know it, but I would probably still feel a sense of urgency.

And I'm not sure if I would have been willing to start anything with Kay, knowing our memories of it will be suppressed when we are sent back. Maybe I would have seen it as a second chance anyway but... I just don't know.

[Now that made even more sense to her. Because she did have a world to return to. Or, at least, a new world she'd promised to travel to. Maybe not the world they came from--that was no longer a possibility--but one similar enough. With the faces of their loved ones waiting for them.]

[It was, perhaps, one of the few reasons why Mai couldn't picture herself settling in this city. Not for long.]

[Sparing him further embarrassment, she shook her head.]
