2nd Lesson [Video]

[One day Yukihime will make one of her trademark grandiose speeches on this thing, I swear. But today she's being impossibly laconic again, starting the video with zero fanfare and a disinterested presentation.]

So, the house I was renting got incinerated during the fun. Most of my money was in it.

[There's a pause; even now she's weighing the merits of this against what she considers all the vastly easier options that don't involve having to ask favors of people. Or have anything to do with them at all, really.]

Which means I'm looking for a room. A free one.

[Here's where you might expect some kind of personal plea, an attempt to engage the audience's sense of altruism, but nope. The whole request is, despite being totally one-sided, just 'take it or leave it'.]

I think I could offer you a room, but I'd have to ask my room mate first, if that would be okay?

They don't like surprises?

[She's joking.]

It's not that, but I think it's always nice to at least give an house mate a heads up.

I was kidding, you know. I'm not exactly spoiled for options, so get back to me when you can.

I will do. But I guess I should at least introduce myself. My name is Kairi.

How old are you and your roommate, anyway?

We're both 16. It's kind of young to be living alone without parents, but we managed so far.

It depends. In times of social disruption it wouldn't be uncommon at all. There's always war orphans and the like... this is a happier fate than that, at least.

[She's just. So cheerful.]

Still, being in a position where you can give of your own product to others, I suppose I shouldn't call you children.

It is. In this case it's probably because we got separated from our crew and wound up here. But I've found minus that one incident that this place is a lot nicer.

[She smiles slightly.]

I don't mind if you do or not, especially since technically we still are and I wouldn't mind.

The place you hold for yourself in society, how you live, matter a lot more than your age.

Though in my experience the young will show their age sooner or later, too.

I guess experience plays a part in it too, am I right to assume?

There can't be anything else. What besides their experiences turns a child into an adult?

I guess age and education helps a bit.

You can pass time without learning anything easily enough. And for most of history there was barely any formal education, but people still matured.

But having some form of knowledge helps us in understanding certain things. I at least found that in the world I was in before that learning helped.

I'm a teacher, you know, you don't have to try to convince me that learning has its uses. It just isn't the same as maturity.

You're a teacher? What did you teach?

It was a little rural school with only a few teachers, we didn't specialize.

Kind of like where I was from. We didn't have many teachers because we were a small island. Do you think you'll teach here?

I've agreed to. The school construction didn't escape unscathed either, though, so I don't know when I'm starting.

Then it might be some time I suppose all things considering. But I hope it all works out for you in the end.

I'll make something or another work. No point in you worrying about it.

[She just has that tremendous indifference to small changes in how she lives that can be a little hard to make small talk through...]

[She gives a small nod.]

I should really go and get things sorted and to get to work. It was nice talking to you.

Mhm. [She nods back.] Do tell me what your friend says at first opportunity.

I will do.

[With that she switches off.]
