I feel like these kinds of questions are going to become more normal.

But the obvious answer that most people have already stated is it just say something and if it ends badly then you just know and... would probably be awkward for a while.

Just ask them if they want to actually date instead of 'fake date'. It's either a yes or no. Simple as that.
