genessia | First Puzzle | Action, Video

[Luke is a rather calculating young man, all things considered. As such, he's already been awake from his odd slumber in the bay for quite some time before he decides it's time to test the video feed out. He's sitting on a bench outside of the library--libraries are always a good place to figure things out--when he turns the feed on. For a thirteen-year-old suddenly stranded in a new city, he seems rather calm.

Hello!

[He waves at the video feed and straightens his hat.]

My name is Luke. I just woke up here, and I'm a little bit confused as to...well, as to everything, honestly. It's always best to start an investigation by asking people around town, and this little phone makes that a lot easier!

[Luke glances behind him and then points.] I'm outside the library. I didn't go around the whole city yet, since it's so huge. But if anybody has anything important that I should know, I'd really appreciate it!

[Luke fidgets just slightly in his seat. He's very set on seeming calm but the facade is wearing thin.]

And I suppose I have to find the Professor. And place to live...and somewhere to work...

So, if anyone can help at all...

[And she sits down on the bench next to him.]

But you did the other right thing for getting information, too--asking people. I don't know if your professor is here or not, but there are a lot of nice people, and you've got money to get you started. I work at the library here, like I said, it's pretty easy to find a job!

The professor isn't here.

[The young apprentice frowns at the statement, fiddling with his hat.]

He's very good at solving mysteries like this...

[He forces himself to smile. Gentlemen don't get upset like this, especially not with a lady!]

Any place will let me rent a flat, then? Most places where I'm from wouldn't let me as I'm too young.

Ah...it's okay, I'm sure he'll show up eventually.

[And she points at herself.]

I'm not exactly a detective or anything, but I really like reading mystery novels and solving puzzles, I'll do my best to work on cracking this Genessia case!

[She forgets that places outside of Death City don't let kids live on their own.]

Yeah, and if you need any help, you can always ask your friends--like me!

[Was he talking about renting an apartment because he has totally moved on from that now because puzzles.]

You like puzzles too?!

[Have the Most Excited Apprentice Ever, Maka. He claps his hands together and then opens his little satchel, pulling out a worn-appearing puzzle book. The cover is definitely well-loved. He shows her the book.]

I love puzzles! This is a book the Professor gave me but some of them I still have to really think about.

[He flicks through the page, and then shows her a puzzle with a wide smile.]

There's a whole bunch of puzzles like this one, where you have to draw the picture with just one line. But one of these pictures can't be drawn that way!

Yeah, I like all kinds of puzzles. Word games, riddles--[OH.

OH YAY.

A PUZZLE FRIEND.]

Is that right? Let's see here...

[Her eyes flick over the puzzle for a moment, taking in the images and trying to discern the pattern between them. Finally she nods.]

Mm, it's the bottom left one.

[Luke beams, nodding.]

Mmhm! The trick is that there has to either be an even number of lines where they cross, or two sets of odd numbers.

[Closing the small puzzle book, he sets it in his lap.]

I haven't found any puzzles hidden here.

Then, that means it's time to make some puzzles of your own, doesn't it? I'll help you with it, and...I think I know somebody else that might, too.

[He smiles.]

If I make all of them up, then there won't be any for me to find!

[And then he shrugs slightly, the smile almost becoming nervous in nature.]

I'm not so good at making up puzzles either. The Professor is much better..

Don't worry, I will too! You can make puzzles for me to solve, and I'll make puzzles for you to solve!

Okay! I promise I'll make up some very nice puzzles, then!

[Luke nods.]

Your friend likes puzzles too?

[He loves puzzles and, frankly, spends a lot of time with people who love them as well. Meaning he wants to find those people here, too.]

I think so, he likes palindromes and stuff, so maybe he likes riddles and word games too. You have to be...careful around him, though, his ideal is symmetry so he gets sick if he doesn't see something symmetrical.

Oh. Well that's all right! I suppose I understand that.

Sometimes the Professor let's his office get so messy. I always tidy up but...well. It doesn't look nice that way.

Geez...my professor's the same way, too. But Miss Marie cleans up well enough. I don't know what he'd do without her sometimes. I can't stand having my apartment be messy or anything like that.

Mmm...yeah. I do wish the Professor would put things away. I can't imagine how he keeps things organized with things all over the place.

[He tilts his head.]

Maybe Professors are always like that?

Maybe they are. They're always busy and have to keep their research organized, I guess they wouldn't have room in their heads to prioritize cleaning.
