[Can’t a bloke fade from existence without ending up in some place that he didn’t plan to be? This was hardly what not existing should look like. Unless he died instead of fading from existence. Then that would make this place Hell or possibly Heaven. He’d assume the latter. He just finished reading the little flier, and he’s finding the stuff a wee bit hard to swallow. So after messing around with the device for a while, he decides to say something.]

So what the piece of shite pamphlet said is true. Someone just brings our arses here and dumps us off here? And for what? None of you figure out that bit of info yet? There’s gotta be a purpose for all this.

A common misconception perpetuated by those too ignorant or imaginative to write the truth in their books.

[He shrugs, unbothered.]

It wasn't so in Death City, where my late father was beloved by the students and faculty of his academy, where the next generation of gifted humans were trained to defend or lead.

A reaper's duty is to the souls of the living as well as the dead. I'm surprised to hear you lived in North America but did not know this. Are you another from one of those other Earths I've heard of?

It's important that all living beings embrace those differences that spring up. It's your adaptability and changeable natures that make you such hardy beings, after all.

[There is admiration there; the reaper loves humans, that much may be obvious. For all their imperfections and mortality, it was these fragile, vivacious beings among whom he was raised.]

The situation of these people with this 'X-Gene' you speak of, they remind me of the Weapons of my world, and how some humans, fearing what they didn't understand, persecuted them.

How ironic it must have seemed to them that these same Weapons would eventually become the right hands of those who tirelessly defended them from those that would threaten civilization. It was a sad chapter of our world's history, but one I am glad to have put behind us.
