I know there are a few nonhumans around and you lot just love to talk about yourselves and what's different where, so indulge me for a second on a personal interest.

Are any of you immortal?

Being thought to be immortal is usually way more fun than testing whether it's true.

So did you kill them to brag about it or did it just happen?

That's fair enough, though one of the two I would certainly say has a decent chance of being the legitimate article, because I may have helped vanquish her, but I doubt she's truly dead.

One was merely a mad king on a quest for power above all else. The other... was the goddess herself, or rather a split part of her who had decided that she needed to end the world and start anew. Suffice to say, my companions and I didn't go quietly, and with the help of her other half we managed to defeat her. Why she split in half is a rather long story altogether, but the point of the matter is... I've dealt with more immortals than I'd care to in one lifetime.

I don't think that will be a problem. [They're her followers, after all, she's left them all when she got tired of them before.]

You should try not to make a habit of it. Some die harder than others, and some not at all.

Fair enough, but I hate to see the strong bullying the weak simply because they think they can get away with it. All too often I find that beings who make claims of immortality do so simply to take advantage of others.

Living somewhere like this where no one knows enough to tell truth from a bluff, pretty much anyone can do that if they're willing to take the risk.

Leaving immortality aside, would you consider yourself human?

Absolutely not! Even the word human is vile to me.

I didn't say your entire species is vile... just the word human is. In the world I came from, the goddess had named your species Beorc and my species Laguz. Some fools decided to adopt the name 'human' to differentiate your race even further from my own, and we took to calling Beorc humans as a passive aggressive insult when they enslaved our race.

You have no choice as to what race your born as, yet I still have much disdain for many humans and their arrogance.

[Well, she can't say she minds the little history lesson, even if she's not inclined to ask people to explain this stuff in detail directly.]

[Lethe felt as though she had to explain this bit of her world's history quite a bit, since she felt almost obligated to justify her reason for hating humans. In her own world it was the failing of the humans not to pass on their history, but in this world, she was the first Laguz they'd likely ever known.]

To a degree... there are still those here who I suspect would certainly try to enslave others if given the means and opportunity.
