[murph]

[She rubbed at her face and used the curled edges of her hand to try and work the sleep out of her eyes. She felt stiff and her body was slow and sluggish to obey the commands to wake up. When she did drift through the layers of sleep she realized something was very wrong.

She shot up like a bolt and caused a small box to tumble off her into the modified canoe thing she was in. A quick look told her she was dressed and she was armed, so all she needed to know now is where in hell she was.

Karrin rifled through the box, fingers turned over the pamphlet before they took up the pendant. Oh, this was not funny. She began the low seething hiss of breath that would let those who knew her ease back like anticipating a tea kettle about to blow. She picked up the com device and turned it on.

The screen would show a skeptical looking blond with a furrowed brow.]

Right. This isn't Chicago, or any other place I recognize, so I'm gonna go out on a limb here and ask where am I? And why am I here because I have to tell you waking up in a strange place is not what I call calming.

[Times like this she really missed being able to flash her badge and have at least that amount of pull behind it. Guess she'd just have to get by on her own natural charms. Yeah, this would be fun.]

[After so long Harry had given up on ever hearing this voice again, of seeing this face. So when Murphy appears on the comm it's like a kick in the gut, and he spends a long time just staring at the phone in his hand just stopped dead in his tracks in the snow with a cup of fast-food coffee forgotten in his other hand.

After what feels like an eternity, he fumbles with the buttons on the phone to drag up his own video feed to reply the only way his brain can think up right now.]

Murphy?

[murph]

[To understand the complex wave of emotions that flicker over her face you really have to know Karrin Murphy, and you gotta be quick. She doesn't betray herself for long but there is a widening of those blue eyes and a sudden sharp draw of breath between parted lips before they set in a thin, grim line.]

That's what they tell me.

[She'd told people Harry was alive, she'd fought bitterly with friends about it, but she'd also seen too much to take things at face value. Pun fully intended.]

And you're Harry Dresden?

[Harry does know her, and he can even be quick every now and then. He catches that brief moment, before her guard goes up and caution and suspicion take over.]

[It almost makes him laugh. Waking up in a weird pod in a bizarre city, and she's making sure the first friendly face she sees isn't some kind of alien clone, and all he could think was how glad he was to have somebody else around who got it. And he also knows he only has one shot to convince her, to pick one thing to say that would prove that he is who he claims.]

[What else was there? He scratches his chin and lets out a sigh.]

Harry Dresden... now that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time.

[Said in his very best Alec Guinness voice, naturally.]

[The smile isn't wide, nor is it full, but it's there. The mannerisms, the stupid impersonation and most of all the fact that, that particular sci-fi classic was used was enough to put her more at ease.

It didn't let her off her guard completely but it helped.]

So help me Obi-won. What the hell's going on here?

[That was what she said, and the tone was matter of fact, but somewhere in those blue eyes was an unspoken question that hinged on hurt. What happened?]

[That smile is met with one of his own. Hell's bells, but it felt good to see her again, even if he knew that a joyful reunion probably wasn't in the cards just yet. There were still questions to be answered, some bigger than others and at least one that he'd tried really hard to keep from asking himself too often.

He really wished he had a good answer for that one "Oh, somebody shot me and I woke up in a pod" was pretty lame.]

It's a long story, probably better told sitting down. With something strong to drink.

[He glances down at the coffee in his hand and promptly discards the whole thing into a nearby trashcan, and starts heading off toward the old truck that he got around in these days.]

I'll, uh, I'll come pick you up.

[murph]

Yeah. Yeah ok.

[Tactical disadvantage, enclosed space under someone elses control. The Dresden she knew wasn't a threat but she was pretty confident in a hand to hand fight she could put him down, and he'd told her often enough that wizards were a susceptible to bullets as...

She winced away from that thought but it had given her what she needed, a painful reminder that she couldn't simply believe this because she wanted to.]

I'll be here, but in the meantime. This isn't Chicago but it doesn't feel like Faerie either. Some place else then?

[Though the subject was light information the conversation was anything but casual. Most things slipped up when they thought your guard was down so getting him to talk was a good way of testing the waters.]

[And Harry was pretty confident that, in a hand to hand fight, Murphy would kick his ass up and down the street, Hulk strength or not, and still have time to do a little sight-seeing.

He knows she's gathering information and feeling out whether he was legit or not at the same time. He doesn't blame her. If he didn't know better by now, he'd be doing just that himself. So he focuses on answering as best as he can while he gets in the truck and starts up an engine that sounds like it would eat the Blue Beetle for breakfast.]

Some place else. [He nods.] It isn't part of the real world as we know it but it definitely isn't the Nevernever either. I'd say different planet but it looks like somebody around here didn't get the memo on that whole "conservation of mass" thing.

[Carol. She looks just like Carol. It isn't until she actually speaks that Kirk realizes that this isn't Dr. Marcus, and the hopes he'd entertained of finally greeting someone he knows are dashed. It's disappointing, but he doesn't need to let that stop him from saying hello.]

You're in a city called Genessia. As for why we're here?

[He shrugs.]

I wouldn't mind knowing that myself.

Genessia? Yeah, never heard of it.

[But isn't this guy Captain Helpful? Still he was trying she could at least take it as it was meant.]

We all did, as far as I know. There was even a huge one once for this enormous robot with a grating voice.

Possibly, sure, But in my experience people are either abducted as slaves to work for free or they are given reasons to come work for a place. Only in between with be a military draft and this isn't that.
