[murph]

[She rubbed at her face and used the curled edges of her hand to try and work the sleep out of her eyes. She felt stiff and her body was slow and sluggish to obey the commands to wake up. When she did drift through the layers of sleep she realized something was very wrong.

She shot up like a bolt and caused a small box to tumble off her into the modified canoe thing she was in. A quick look told her she was dressed and she was armed, so all she needed to know now is where in hell she was.

Karrin rifled through the box, fingers turned over the pamphlet before they took up the pendant. Oh, this was not funny. She began the low seething hiss of breath that would let those who knew her ease back like anticipating a tea kettle about to blow. She picked up the com device and turned it on.

The screen would show a skeptical looking blond with a furrowed brow.]

Right. This isn't Chicago, or any other place I recognize, so I'm gonna go out on a limb here and ask where am I? And why am I here because I have to tell you waking up in a strange place is not what I call calming.

[Times like this she really missed being able to flash her badge and have at least that amount of pull behind it. Guess she'd just have to get by on her own natural charms. Yeah, this would be fun.]

Yeah? Now you have my attention.

[So this place wasn't just strange or malevolent, it had real tangible threats too.]

Bad guys are something of a specialty of mine.

But these guys are good at hiding. They're masterminds. So far, I still can't find a clue of their whereabouts.

Karrin, [She offered.]

Karrin Murphy, and I guess it's a good thing that the beat I worked was devoted to unusual cases that needed digging.

[Digging and the occasional consultation from the only professional Wizard in town.]

Pleasure to meet you, Karrin. I was beginning to think of calling you newbie just now.

I'm Sofia, I've been here long enough to at least know the basics of this world. You're welcome to call on me for help.

[murph]

I'd prefer Karrin, or Murph or Murphy if you don't mind.

[She chuckled about the newbie thing, it had been a long time since she was a newbie to anything.]

Nice to meet you Sophia, I assume you're in the book?

[trigram]

I am. I teach at the local school. It's a dull job, but it pays well.

[murph]

Don't underestimate teachers. Public servants are the life's blood of any city.

[trigram]

I guess that's right. Teachers in this world are held at a higher regard than ours, however. My pay is about equal to a lawyer's.

[murph]

Man did I pick the wrong branch of public service. [Murphy snorted a laugh. Like she ever could have been anything but a cop? Well, moot point now she guessed. She'd been looking for a new line of work after all.]

[trigram]

There's a job in here they call a "City Guardian Assistant", basically a cop. Pay is pretty good. I considered it briefly, but I don't think I could handle a lot of responsibility at the moment...

[She's here on break from her real job back home, which always makes her carry the lives of billions on her shoulders. It's not easy being a superhero]

[murph]

I don't intend to hang around long enough to get that comfortable.

[Awww look who still has hope of going home, it's almost cute isn't it?]

[trigram]

[Sofia's probably the only one who could leave at will given her job, but she can't go back home without getting drop kicked by her boss who practically had to command her to take a vacation.[]

Sadly, you're stuck here. There's no other way to put it. You're going to have to get comfortable here.

[murph]

I don't do so well with limitations.

[trigram]

A lot of the people here do, and so am I. But there's really nothing I could do about it but adapt.

[murph]

Now adapting I am a real pro with, but I gotta tell you I really dislike people telling me what I can and can't do or where I can and can't go. This place do that a lot?

[trigram]

Yeah, there's some petty rules like a city behind an Archway that forbids the use of powers.

[Sofia in the video walked toward the window as she spoke, sounding pretty distracted until she lets herself fall backwards from the window, looking all relaxed. She armored up during her descent, lightly slamming on the concrete sidewalk below, not leaving any damage thankfully]

[murph]

Archway? What's that--

NO!

[She screamed and reached, like an idiot for the screen. This woman just jumped off a building in front of her and she'd before forced to watch her die.

Or not. The transformation leaves her with a blank stare.]

That... is not normal.

[Action?]

[trigram]

[Sofia's lips curled to a smile, amused by Karrin's reaction. What a troll]

That's just a glimpse of the weird things that go around here.

[Sofia's very casual about it. She's seen weirder things in her line of work after all. But she turned around to see the same short-haired blonde woman she's been speaking to on video in person. She just gives her a wave]

[Action]

[Nicely done, it worked. Karrin recovered quickly enough to shut off the phone and tuck it into her pocket, the wave in return however was sort of half hearted.]

[Action 5ever]

[trigram]

[The armored Sofia just walked casually towards Karrin]

Just thought you could use a tour-guide... or a bodyguard. There's been a kidnapping here not a while ago that I got involved in. You may be a cop, but we don't know if the abductors have powers.

[murph]

So this is what teachers do in their down time is it? I think you were leaving out some details.

[She raised a brow but simply nodded at the offer, it was well intended. If someone wanted to try to kidnap her they would be in for a world of hurt.]

If I need you do I shine alight in the sky or something or do you take phone calls?

[trigram]

As cool as the light option sound, a phone call would be more effective. My suit can take calls for me, so you could reach me at anytime.

[Sofia shrugged with her arms crossed]

I'm not a teacher before going here, but... I learned that I like it. Since it pays well in this world, I figured I might as well go for it. A City Guardian or an assistant to one would have made more sense for me, but I'd rather stay away from that much responsibility for now.

[Her tone suddenly lowered. She went undercover as a teacher before taking a vacation to Genessia, and having the same job somehow feels comfortable]

[murph]

It was mostly a joke anyway.


So this is a second career choice? Looks like it's a big change of direction.

[trigram]

It is. But I went undercover at a high school before all of this. Quite enjoyed the teaching part, the lectures, and the field trips. But grading papers and putting up with gossipy faculty members can be annoying.

I don't think I'm built for it.

Well maybe for martial arts training but anything less physical than that isn't so much up my alley.
