[Video] PSA: Pokemon and you

[When the feed turns on, Mewtwo is sitting in the cave sanctuary in his gate, with a rather high tech display mounted on the stone just above him displaying various information on a variety of Pokemon, while Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur surround him.]

Before I begin what I have to say, I suppose it would behoove me to introduce myself formally to all, newcomer as well as veteran. I am the current Deputy Guardian of Fayren, I am called Mewtwo.

I am - like the myriad creatures that have inexplicably found their way into the various cities - a Pokemon.

The word itself is a shortening of Pocket Monster, referring to the storage devices of my world that are used to easily and safely transport Pokemon; the Pokeball.

The Pokeballs many of you have received are incredibly durable devices that can convert a Pokemon into energy and then store them within the device. While in this state, Pokemon have no need of food, water, or experience discomfort of any sort. There are also safety devices in place that allow the Pokemon to escape from the ball if the inhabitant senses danger, be it to the device or their trainer.

As for Pokemon themselves... [He waves a hand, the feed overhead showing biometric data on the three around him and the camera angles upward to better display the data.] ...Pokemon are - at the genetic level - warriors. There are those who choose not to battle, but the vast majority of Pokemon desire to battle. Pokemon view battling not as just a fight, but an exchange of ideals, convictions, and pointing out weaknesses and compensating for those weaknesses.

[The display shifts to show footage recorded earlier of Charizard and Venusaur battling under Mewtwo's supervision.]

Pokemon grow through battle, both in a literal and figurative sense. Once a Pokemon gains enough experience through battle, they may evolve, growing both in size and changing in appearance, as well as gaining access to new abilities and powers that they would not be able to utilize in their un-evolved forms. Depending on the Pokemon itself, there are other ways of triggering evolution, but those can be addressed on a case by case basis.

Pokemon also are identified in part by type. This typing is engrained into the genetics of the Pokemon, giving it advantages and disadvantages over others. For instance, a fire-type Pokemon will have access to attacks that are more effective against grass-type Pokemon. Grass has an advantage over water, and water over fire to name a few. The type of attacks available to Pokemon are not solely dictated by their type, however. For instance, I am a psychic-type Pokemon, but can use electric and fire attacks as well as a plethora of others.

Should anyone have any further questions, I will provide answers should I be able.

Marvelous. What's most effective against psychic types? Those have been giving me trouble as of late.

Oh, and about those ghost types...are they, um, the souls of dead pokemon? Do pokemon have souls? They're not in some sort of mortal peril, are they? Not stuck in limbo or cursed to wander the earth or something?

Psychic types are weak against Dark, Bug, and Ghost-type attacks.

As for the subject of Ghost-type Pokemon, there has been debate amongst the human population as to the origins of the Ghost-type. Some claim certain brands of Ghost Pokemon are the souls of long dead humans, others claim they are the spirits of children who lost their way in the woods.

I cannot speak to any metaphysical aspect of their being, however I can offer my own observations. Ghost-type Pokemon eat, drink, and sleep, breed and reproduce like other Pokemon. Their ethereal nature may make them an oddity to humans, but I believe that is more the product of superstition than science.

[Terra is a little unsure about all of this but her pokemon is sweet and seems rather keen on staying by her side. Once she released her from the pokeball she hadn't wanted to put her back into that small space.]

Why is it that you can talk? I mean I can communicate with her but she can't say anything beside her name... I think.

So these Pokemon actually want to battle? Last time, I had disliked the idea of having these creatures battle for me when I can fight my own battles. But if they actually want to fight, then I can't really deny them that.

It's nice to meet you Mewtwo. I'm living in Fayren at the moment so I thought it would be good to introduce myself before I begin asking anything.

[She smiles and then flicks the screen over to a cute little sleeping pig that hasn't wanted to remove itself from the book that Levy was trying to read.]

I know you said that they like to fight but mine seems to like to sleep. He's not sick is he? You also mentioned types... is there a steel type?

They don't fight to the deaths, do they? I have no issue with sparring, but I'd hate for things to get gruesome.

Dark-type attacks are usually those that rely on subterfuge or trickery, confusing the senses and then striking. That is not the only definition, by far, but that is the most prevalent.

Diet varies from Pokemon to Pokemon, some are carnivores, other herbivores. I have observed that the rule of thumb that can assist trainers in my world applies here as well. By looking at the teeth, you can generally assume whether a Pokemon eats meat or not. However, all Pokemon enjoy berries. Berries have become a staple in the diets of many both for the taste as well as other benefits. A berry eaten during battle can act as a pain killer, as well as cure ailments like poison and paralysis.

Most Pokemon - myself included - have very basic vocal chords that can only form one or two syllables, and as such naming has developed around what a Pokemon can say. However, given my psychic nature, I have learned to communicate through telepathy, and this device can somehow translate my thoughts into audible sound for ease of communication.

Indeed. For Pokemon, battling is a vital part of their day-to-day life. Even in the wild, Pokemon will battle one another to push themselves. However, the symbiotic relationship with human trainers grants Pokemon perspective and strategy that they would not have in the wild. Fire-types using fire to fight one another, forgetting they could use ground-based attacks to gain the upper hand that a Trainer would not.

Tepigs do sleep quite a bit, however that family of Pokemon have a reputation for being strong and resilient warriors as well. I doubt there is anything wrong with yours.

There is indeed a steel type. They strike a balance between offensive and defensive abilities, and are quite resistant to a number of attacks.

No, not in a trainer setting at any rate. There are some Pokemon that hunt for food, but Pokemon who have trainers do not fight to the death.

[Unless there are clones of them fighting for a crazed psychic who thinks all life on the world except clones should be wiped out because humans suck...]

Official Pokemon battles are refereed to avoid injury, however when encountering a wild Pokemon, it is up to the trainer to call back a Pokemon that has been incapacitated, and to hold off further attacks when the wild Pokemon has been rendered unconscious.

Well, that explains one mystery.

[Dairine already knew a good bit of his explanation from her last visit to the Pokemon world, a trip forced on her in the game Paradisa. It was nice to have a review though, since the back and forth between her world and these pocket worlds made it difficult to remember everything. However, there had been one question she had not been able to answer in Paradisa: why her Plusle had been so... eager to fight other Pokemon.

Putting that information aside, she inclines her head slightly towards the video feed.]

Ah...it's good to know more about these...Pokemon. It seems that your elements work a bit differently from our dragon elements, though.

[Which is definitely something she'll have to keep in mind. While both she and her Chimchar are Fire types, Chimchar's elemental strengths and weaknesses may be different from her own.]

I suppose Pokemon don't battle humans, do they? Or fight alongside them?

Ah, that's a relief. For a minute pokemon were beginning to feel quite sinister. Now I know it's mostly you.

[Pokemon kind of remind her of Digimon to an extent. However she knew they had vast differences as well. Never the less it was still rather interesting to the young girl when she appears on the feed.]

So long as we take good care of them, they'll be like our closest friends, right?
