[Well, news and fear are already running rampant regarding this war on magic. While Azalea finds herself upset by the story, she addresses her audience in a calm manner.]

Hello, Genessia. Like many others, I am concerned with this "Hands of Decay" organization, waging their "war on magic" in Fayren. Frankly, regarding magic as nothing but evil is actually very insulting.

A common argument against the necromancy ban in Everglade is that necromancy is a tool, and by itself it is not evil. The same could be said of any form of magic. While I agree that it cannot be evil by itself, I believe that it is more than "just a tool." For those of us who practice it, magic is a vital part of our being. It has many useful purposes. It can save lives. I myself would not be alive today without magic, both from myself and my allies.

On the other hand, magic can also be very dangerous. If the user is careless, it can destroy themselves and anything around them. And there is also the potential for the abuse of magic's power.

It is for all of these reasons that magic should be respected. Many of our spells involve bending the elements to our will. Therefore, all the elements should be respected, even the unpleasant ones. [So yes, that even includes Plague.]

Therefore, the actions of these "Hands of Decay" are doing more evil than good. I would even dare to say that they're not doing any good at all, and like many others, I would like to see them stopped as soon as possible.

[Now that she's said that, she takes a deep breath. There was something else that's been on her mind before this "Hands of Decay" thing popped up.]

As for something unrelated that's been on my mind, there's been a lot of talk lately about an incident involving spirits some months ago? I wasn't around when that happened, so...what exactly happened? And what is it that lurks beyond the barrier?

[She pauses briefly, as she recalls something she's read about in Sornieth.]

...Does the Shade exist in this world as well?

[ Phew, Lucy is actually really tired of having to deal with that spirit debacle by now, but oh well, people are asking. Let them believe or not. ]

As one of the people involved, what happened was that Everglade's barrier started to weaken - enough that malevolent spirits were able to slip in. Some of them attacked the people of Everglade, and anyone targeted .. it was like they had their emotions drained clear out of them. I don't know if those...spirits are the only things outside of the barrier, but it's bad enough, I think, just for them. Anyway, the spirits that weren't attacking people were trying to weaken Genessia's barrier as well - and I don't think I have to tell you how bad it would have been if Genessia's barrier fell.

So we had to find the spirits of Genessia and Everglade to find a way to restore the barriers. Some people were searching, others were evacuating people in danger, or fighting the spirits. My partner and I were lucky enough to find Genessia's spirit, right about when Everglade's barrier started to weaken more, and more spirits were flooding in. Genessia's spirit informed us that a resident of Everglade was attacking Everglade's spirit, and we needed to help save it.

We ran to Everglade, interrupted the madman responsible and chased him off, rescued Everglade's spirit and returned to the Bay so that Everglade's spirit could recover. That's also when I had to let everyone know that the way to fix the barrier, according to the spirits, was to sacrifice a precious memory. I think there were about... eight to ten volunteers? And since we're not overrun with spirits trying to devour our emotions and stars know what else, they were successful in repairing Everglade's barrier. I.. don't know the details of that part- bonding with the spirit took a lot out of me and I was unconscious for three days afterwards.

[ If Azalea wanted to know, Lucy would name names, but there's been enough of that going around and she was more worried about the Hands of Decay than him. Whatever the outcome of the election. ]

No problem. Um.. you mentioned Shades? I don't know if there's anything like that here, but what are they?

But it's only one entity, correct? I don't think .. hrm... well, I haven't heard of anything like that around these parts, but there's still a lot that we don't know about this place.

Nnh, that doesn't resemble anything like the spirits that attacked a few months ago.

Well, stars and gods willing, something like that won't ever show up in Genessia.

Those spirits attacked the place where I was living. I saw firsthand what they were capable of. I and two others had to withdraw. By the time we had returned, the matter was solved.

{ Zeref had always wanted to speak more with this dragon. He was reminded of some of the pro-human veterans of the Dragon Civil War. }

The idea that magic is inherently neutral - neither good nor evil - is a source of contentious debate in my world. The Ishgarian Magic Council considers that view wrong, even dangerous. Very few legitimate guilds in Ishgar challenge them on that point.

And I have never heard of this 'Shade,' and I don't think anybody knows what is beyond the barrier, not even the natives. Nor do I think they want to find out.

Not that I saw.

{ Zeref sighed. The current Magic Council hasn't been around very long, but the one Jackal wiped out, and especially the Council before that... }

Humans fear what they do not understand. Fear is often irrational. But in the case of the Magic Council, I cannot help but suspect that they arbitrarily label magic 'dark' in order to consolidate their own power. They are a group of unelected, self-appointed mages whose only true claim to power was their possession of two particularly powerful weapons. Now that those weapons are gone, I don't believe it to be an accident that their current membership is made up of the Ten Wizard Saints, whose ranks are also politically motivated.

I don't deny that the majority of Ishgar's Dark Guilds are scum, however. Many of them did deserve to be wiped out.

I agree. On another continent, one nation in particular agrees as well, to the point where the designation of 'dark magic' was abolished entirely.

Usually, it is magic whose sole purpose is causing death or widespread destruction, or magic that requires the sacrifice of humans souls in order to work. It has also been applied to magic designed to deprive others of their free will, or even the creation of life itself, such as the Etherious.
