Good day to you all.
[Sitting comfortably at a writing desk in her apartment, Cherise laces her fingers together and settles her hands primly on her lap.]
I've made the acquaintance of a number of you, but I'm aware there are many of whom I've not yet had the pleasure. My name is Cherise, and given that we've been encouraged to seek out a profession, I wish to not only introduce myself but to offer my skills as well. I'm prepared to offer a demonstration.
[She rises from her desk, picking up the radio to bring it along with her. A slender wand slides out of her sleeve and into her hand, and with a few quick words of French, she suddenly appears upon a cold, frosted hill in Attleton. The device is placed in the crook of a small tree as Cherise steps back.]
As a sorceress and Spellcatcher, my primary focus is on defensive charms and protective enchantments. Please observe.
[Cherise draws a pair of gloves from her coat pocket, separating them, and holding one out at arm's length. She points the tip of her wand at it, concentrating. A few quick slashes and curls, and she speaks again.]
Souple comme la peau, dure comme la pierre. Repousser tout préjudice qui pourrait venir.*
[There's a faint white glow that burns on the tip of her wand, then passes into the glove with a pearly shimmer. With that done, Cherise tugs on the glove and works it snugly onto her fingers.]
This particular charm I've just cast is one meant to repel brute force and extreme velocity. The fabric maintains its flexibility, but has been strengthened to resist damage. If nothing else, it's always nice to prevent unwanted snags, hm? But should something unexpected arise...
[Cherise whirls to point her wand at a boulder almost as big as she is.]
Venez!*
[The boulder upheaves itself lightning fast out of the ground, hurtling straight at the English woman. Her gloved hand is outstretched, as if she might prevent herself from being hit in such a way. ...And it totally works. The boulder rebounds and drops to thud solidly into the ground, and Cherise is forcibly moved back only half an inch. The tails of her peacoat flutter slightly with the impact, then drop back down to her legs once more.]
There. You see?
[She smiles, holding up her gloved hand and wiggling her fingers.]
It doesn't even sting. Of course, there are many other spells I can cast should you need them. It all depends on what you expect to occur, and being prepared for what you do not expect. I do hope some of you find my services useful, as we all must make a living in this bizarre place somehow. If you wish to discuss services and rates, feel free to contact me as you wish. My thanks.
[Cherise inclines her head, then reaches out to end the video feed.]
*OOC: Cherise speaks French but I do not. My apologies for any errors that may have resulted in my use of Babelfish.

I don't often see magic like that, honestly.

[Holy crap. Harry was no stranger to defensive magic, having stitched some pretty potent ones into his coat and being able to whip up some powerful shields on the fly, but nothing that simply said no to the laws of physics like she had just done. Holy crap.]
Well, [he says after gawking for a moment or several] looks like I have some competition.

[Hey, babes. How good are you at removing bindings from ghosts? I've got a bit of name problem. I haven't been here long myself, but I'd owe you a huge favor.]
no subject
[But she looks a little pleased nonetheless.]
What kind of magic have you seen, Sofia? Anything of particular interest?
no subject
[Excellent, she impressed the...wait, he's the wizard? Having only spoken with him via audio feed, this is the first Cherise has seen of his face.]
You seem a little young to be a wizard.
[But perhaps he altered his appearance to stay that way. He wouldn't be the first.]
no subject
That would depend entirely on the skill of the person who placed the bindings in the first place. To which ghost are you referring?
no subject
no subject
[In fairness, he was pretty young compared to a lot of the wizard community back home.]
And you seem a little stable and not power mad enough to be a sorcerer. I think we're working with different definitions here.

I couldn't hope for a finer compliment.
[Always nice to be told she's not an unbalanced megalomaniac.]
But yes, that does seem to be the case.
[She regards him with new interest, resting a knuckle against her chin.]
Perhaps we can swap notes at a later date, once I've managed to settle in and get my bearings.
[Which...will honestly take quite some time. At least a month.]
no subject
Sounds good to me. I wouldn't mind seeing if I can duplicate that glove trick of yours, looks pretty handy.
[Nailed it!]
no subject
I've heard that some make use of arrays, but they're so inconvenient! Unless you plan on casting the same spell over and over, of course. Not very versatile.
[She inspects her glove primly. She might be a little bit of a snob when it comes to magical choices of casting.]
no subject
I've never died here, so I couldn't tell you. And as there is no spellcaster manifesting the spell, I'm afraid I cannot do any unweaving.
no subject
[Frantically she searches her mind, trying to match wits and come up with another pun. Something with fingers, or palms, or...or... It's no good. She's just not very funny. She sinks her face into her hand.]
Yes, it is.
[She sees what you did there, and it hurts.]
no subject
Mhm. Not very great for stealth. My partner was able to pick them off like fish in a barrel with just a sniper rifle from a mile away.
[Sofia shook her head, remembering how many magic-wielders who use flashy spellcasting like that are always so full of themselves that they kept mocking Troy (Sofia's partner) for not having any powers, and the man just kills them anyway even with mundane weapons]
In my universe, the more powerful you are the less bright and flashy your spell casting is. I know of people who could cast a powerful spell while multitasking, and their target is on the other side of the planet. They were able to do it just by sheer force of will, and the fact that they were once worshiped as gods.

Betelgeuse still had no intention of getting a job, but what the hell. He figured it might earn him some brownie points, make him seem like an "upstanding citizen" or some crap like that.
no subject
Let me know when you're free and we'll stitch something together.
[Guh. Okay, that one was reaching a little.
Ha!]
no subject
What kind of career were you intending to seek?
no subject
[Color her shocked! She didn't even know that was possible. It was no wonder these people used to be idolized as deities.]
If I might be so bold, why haven't you pursued spellcraft? You certainly don't lack the intelligence.
no subject
Certainly. I look forward to it.
[She gives a polite incline of her head.]
no subject
[Hell if I know. The pamphlet just suggested getting work. Back home I'm a bio-exorcist.]
no subject
[She half-finishes speaking the word before she realizes what he just said. He exorcises biological matter. Pests? Or people? Cherise FROWNS. He can't do that. She taps her device again to prepare her response...then deletes it. Don't make assumptions. Be patient. He's asking for help, no one is getting exorcised.]
Perhaps you could find work at the Binford Gardens apartment building. I hear that place tends to harbor a lot of insects and other unwanted vermin.

Surely you didn't eat cockroaches and mice before you died!

How long have you existed in your incorporeal state?

How have you managed to remain for so long? Why have you not passed on?
no subject
In Betelgeuse's experience, knowing the rules is essential to properly breaking them.
no subject
[So no killing her, please.]
Perhaps you could see if anyone in this world has experienced death? I understand it isn't exactly permanent.

[Sofia shrugs like it wasn't that surprising to her anymore]
I know summoning some rituals to call on a certain spirit, if that counts as spellcraft in your world. But in my job, there's a lot of people who could cancel out magic. My partner's expertise is the use of anti-magic, actually. So does many of our enemies. Survival skills and learning to fight efficiently without my powers took priority over learning a few spells.
But I don't mind learning now that I'm on break.
no subject
[Don't ask; she doesn't get how it works either.]
no subject
Such rituals are extremely dangerous! Not to mention highly illegal, considering how much damage they could cause.
[Perhaps they have nicer spirits where Sofia's from. She actually looks a little shaken at the idea of someone who can cancel out magic. Someone like that would be nigh-invincible.]
Well...perhaps I could assist? I'm not certain if our ability to tap into magic is the same, but it's at least worth the attempt.
no subject
[Is it an intelligent computer system? I mean, how's it going to collect?]

[She smiles a little. It DOES sound like fun, and whether the spells can be taught or not, it's nice just to spend time in good company.]

[She knows more about teaching strategy and making plans. But she did have a small hand in teaching her younger sibling a few things.]
How many languages do you speak?

As far as I'm aware, the person who's dwelled in the city longest is Harry Dresden, the city guardian of Everglade.
