[It was bad enough arguing with Airy. Getting a random accusatory text from Jefferson and a big, fat "I told you so" from Dave was enough to make him need a beer. He wasn't normally one to drown his sorrows in booze, and he didn't have any intention of getting drunk really, he just needed to think and not think of all the feelings his conversation with Jefferson had brought to the surface.

The bar he picked was far from their apartment, safe in his opinion, and he didn't look around at the other patrons as he took a seat at the bar and ordered a regular, bottled beer.]

[He scoffs, at the situation, not at the wolf.]

That's what Jefferson said.

[He takes a breath and lets it out slowly.]

I had a fight with Airy.

[Toby has only recently met Jefferson and finds the guy sort of annoying and pushy. His heart is in the right place but that's it.]

What about?

[Pushy's one way to describe that guy, Toby.]

She wants to go to the dream docks.

So?

[He doesn't see why that's a bad thing. If anything the pair of them having shared memories would cause them less stress. After a half second he continues.]

If she doesn't go, it won't change what happens. You aren't sparing her anything.

[Nathan runs a hand back through his hair, nodding.]

Yeah, I get that. I just...

[He trails off, swallowing.]

I really can't protect her, can I?

[Toby puts down his drink and looks over at Nathan.]

What specifically are you trying to protect her from?

[He could put that into words pretty easily.]

Her blaming herself for how I feel.

And you think she isn't blaming herself now?

[Toby snorts.]

Ever think she might stop blaming herself if you talk to her and just tell her this is why I'm doing this.

[Nathan, instead of answering immediately, just takes a sip from his beer, looking off into the middle distance before looking back to Toby.]

No. Actually. It hadn't.

Try it and then just get together.

[A day ago he'd have never said that.]

From where I'm from you guys look pretty serious about it. [Why wait? That's logical right? Toby can understand people to a degree however he's still thinking about Cas and wanting to hold her.]

[Nathan's brow furrows immediately.]

Wait...what? Where you're from?

[Toby shrugs.]

When I'm from is your future. [He's pretty sure he'd told Nathan that; oh well.] I found Airy after you guys defeated Amadeus. At the time I was looking for my mother.

Turns out my father was alive too.

[He sees no reason to keep it from Nathan anymore.]

You two were together. [That's all he knows about it. It'd been awkward the following months and Toby hadn't tried to dig to learn more.]

[He's never known Toby to lie, or Gus for that matter, even if the truth was something they knew the other person didn't want to hear.

Only, Nathan did want to hear this particular truth.]

That...doesn't mean much, Toby. I mean, thanks, I appreciate you telling me, but...sometimes people don't get along, or work out, depending on what point in their lives they're at, you know? Maybe...she's not ready.

[But isn't that a reason in favor of her going to the dream docks?]

[Toby just shrugs.]

How do you know that?

[It isn't like Nathan's asking her though this is an instance of the pot calling the kettle black. Toby had been pushing Cat away for months before things snowballed into something that he hadn't been able to completely control. Not that he's upset about it but he doesn't think he deserves it.

TOby takes a sip of his beer and then scoffs.]

Pushing her away isn't going to help you find out.

[Pot meet kettle.]

I don't.

[That was the worst part about it. He wanted desperately to protect her from everything, and he didn't even know if it was possible.]

Then what's stopping you find finding out?

[Toby feels like he's asking questions in circles now but Nathan doesn't really have any good answers for these.]

[Nathan puts the bottle down on the bar with a little more force than is really necessary.]

Because I'm scared, alright?

Of what?

[Toby's voice remains calm.]

[He swallows before responding.]

of her leaving.

I don't think that's going to happen.

[He sounds really sure of himself but then Toby's personal experiance has told him that pushing people away is what makes them leave.]

[At that, Nathan scoffs, flagging down the bartender for another beer.]

What makes you so sure?

[Toby grunts and lifts his beer to his lips.]

Because you aren’t going anywhere but down the more you keep it in and over think it.

[Because that’s exactly what he used to do and it’ll bring Airy down with him. Toby considers Nathan something close to a friend even without Airy’s strange relation to his father and Nathan’s relation to her.]

[He raises an eyebrow, looking over to the werewolf.]

You sound like you're speaking from experience.

I am.

[Toby's response is short and gruff. He isn't opposed to talking about it except he is. This is Nathan but it's not. He's not the same person that he had spoken to in the past and he's unsure if he wants to open the can of worms that is his own past.

He downs his beer and then places the empty glass on the counter. He doesn't order another but turns to look at Nathan.]

So what are you going to do?

[Nathan shook his head. He still didn't know. He just knew he had to do something.]

I don't know.

[Toby rolls his shoulders.]

Just don't take to much time and if you did something, just apologize.

[He knows that Cas had left the house and he's gotten enough information to know what's going on.]

[Nathan nods, finishing his beer and placing some bills under the bottle.]

Yeah. I know. I've handled all of this wrong.

[He takes a breath and looks over to Toby.]

Thanks...by the way.

[Toby waves his hand and then turns to leave. He's going to see if Cas is home.]
