Hey folks. Let's do an informal poll. What's your favorite literary genre?

[Oh boy. Once again, Dairine has been thrust into another responsibility. After some pondering and a deep breath, she creates a filter for her fellow staff. She can handle this. Running a store can't be much harder than moving a planet, right?]

[And thus a red-headed young teen appears on the screen with her arms folded in what she hopes is a professional-looking fashion.]

Evening. I have a brief message for you both.

As you may have heard, our previous owner Levy McGarden has gone home. She has left me in charge of Scribes and Scripts. With this change in position, it seems like a good time to introduce or reintroduce myself.

My name is Dairine Callahan. Before I arrived here, I lived in Hempstead, New York. I've worked at the Scribes and Scripts for a little over a year now. I intend to make this transition as smooth as possible for you.

In addition, this change opens up the assistant manager position. If you are interested, feel free to contact me.

What's up, stranger? I hear you know some teen detectives.

I know of a few, yes.

[Not as random as he might think.]

Mm. Seems there're a bunch in your world, mostly in Japan.

There are, I've personally encountered three of them. Although Hakuba probably counts as half, since he works in both Japan and England.

[Dari snaps her fingers.]

Ah yeah! Hakuba's the one Conan mentioned. How long have you known him?

I encountered him before I encountered Kudou Shinichi.

Why the interest?

[ Not that KID minds talking about the detectives, since it wasn't like he was giving anything away, but now he wondered what the big deal was. ]

Well, I was trying to figure out how teens are allowed to do detective work on a legal basis.

Maybe unlock the secret as to why there are so many.

Either our police force is just that incompetent [ which he doubts because he knows his fair share of cops, let's be real here ] or the detectives are just that good. Of, if you're Hakuba, your dad is the guy in charge of the police force in Tokyo.

I never understood that either, to be honest.

Ohh, so it's like "take your child to work" day.

...Except they keep insisting on going every day.

And then do the work for them.

Hmm. Somehow it still sounds like it should violate some child labor law.

It's Japan.

But Hakuba has also worked in England.

I suppose he doesn't get paid for his work, right?

Nope.

I don't know much about his time in England, although I know he's done work in France as well. Hakuba tends to keep more of an eye on thievery cases, so that might be why he's managed to get away with it in England. It's not like Kudo and his murders.

Maybe. The risks are likely lower for those kinds of cases. Shinichi, on the other hand...

...Well, he seems to attract danger wherever he goes.

His father hasn't helped much from what I understand. Apparently he brought his young son along on consultations, before he started doing his own.

That he does, his current predicament a valid case in point.

So I've heard. I'm not sure what's worse: that or leaving their fourteen year old behind when moving to another country.

[Dairine's impression of Shinichi's parents is less than positive.]

[ It's probably a good thing that she doesn't know Kaito then, since his mom likes to run off and take long vacations in Vegas and Paris. Sure she calls him all the time and checks in on him; even comes back home for visits, but... yeah. ]

I've never met his parents, so I cannot comment on his personal life with regards to them.

[ Except for that one time, with Yukiko, but he was tiny then and so. ]

[She would almost definitely disapprove. What is with parents in their world leaving their kids in a different country??]

Neither have I, but that's not stopping me.

I've often gotten the impression that not much does.

[Charles looks thoughtful for some time.]

I most enjoy "Lost Knowledge" tales, rife with well, researched history and science. What do you prefer?

Good research can make a big difference.

Scifi is my favorite, but I'm not too picky.

[He nods in agreement.]

What about science fiction appeals to you?

Oh man.

[Where does she even start.]

It's empowering. And eye opening. The sheer realm of possibilities for characters, mechanics, and setting makes it seem like anything's possible.

[There's also the small factor of science fiction leading Dairine to her own wizardry so... yeah.]

Fantasy! [No hesitation in that answer at all.] Especially if it has griffins in it.

[Dairine smiles a little.]

You really like griffins, huh?

Don't you? They're so majestic! And fluffy!

Can't say I've met one before.

But I do like fantasy and most fantastic creatures.

I haven't either, but I've heard about them. All the great stories about the Grey Wardens riding them into battle... [She sighs.]

It would be nice if most of those fantastic creatures still existed.

Well if they once existed in your world, there might be a chance some are still around.

Not sure if I can say the same about my own.

[Neets is the Earth living being expert, not Dair.]

Oh, it's rather doubtful. They haven't existed for a couple of ages now. I doubt they'll come back. But it's nice to think that they might.

[She sighs.]

Is it the same in your world, too? Where they just don't exist anymore?

Honestly I'm not certain they ever existed in my world. They're thought to be strictly fictional there.

I think some people think the same thing back home. Because it's been a few ages since griffons existed.

That wouldn't be surprising. There are some folks who don't believe in anything unless it's standing right in front of them.

[Her roommate, for example.]

Right! Nothing against that or anything, but there's so many interesting things in the world that can't be seen. But they do exist. That's the magic of things, isn't it?

I don't really have a favourite kind. But I guess stories with adventure are always a fun read.

They are. A book with no adventure can be kinda boring.

[Depending on who wrote it, of course.]
