Nova City Trick-Or-Treat Walk!

WARNINGS: Hopefully not many? Adorable trick or treaters and just goofy Halloween fun tbh. Some of the characters are still affected by the curse but this is mostly just a happy lil log.

[ While each of the Guardian and Deputies is required to have their devices on for alerts in case something does happen, most of them are in front of the Guardian Skywalk this evening for a special event! Kids can go around visiting each of the Guardians, who are all volunteering to hand out candy. There are a couple of attractions set up for the kids nearby- a ring toss, a bean bag toss, laser tag, a kettle corn stand, and a stuffed animal claw machine. It's nowhere near the size of a real carnival, just big enough to get the kids out and have some fun. Naturally, it's a safe place for everyone and it's free for anyone 13 or under. Adults are welcome if they pay with a limit of one prize per game (seriously, this is for the kids, don't be a dick).

Each of the Deputy Guardians has a huge pillowcase of candy to give out though, so feel free to go up to any one of them to chat or to get some sugary goodness, see the costumes, or just enjoy the cool night air! ]

[Artanis doesn't really get the holiday. He doesn't get why people are dressing up, and seeing as he's a Protoss, he doesn't understand candy.

But it's for the children. Artanis is always willing to do something for children, regardless of their race. So he's there, carrying a bag of candy to hand out. No costume, though -- he's an alien. He doesn't need one.]

Thanks for coming, Artanis.

[ She knows that it's not exactly easy to comprehend Halloween. Even if he doesn't understand it, he still came to help out, so she's of course going to express that she's grateful. Particularly since she has no doubt that some of the kids are probably going to try to hang off of him since he's a huge alien. ]

Of course. It is my responsibility to assist you, after all.

[Artanis has been a bit awkward with the children, though not for a lack of trying. He's shown some of them a few of his powers for their entertainment, such as short-range teleportation and levitation, which they seem to enjoy well enough.]

And I am glad to do something specifically for the children of this realm.

Good. It's nice to actually get to see some of the people we're doing this job for in the first place anyway.

[ It's a nice motivator and reminder of why they're fighting, hopefully. ]

Though I won't lie, I still am not sure dressing up and being given candy is the soundest of solutions for quelling demons.

For the children? It is a solution that works. Their lives are so simple that something they love will go far toward placating them.

[Even across races, that is still true.]

I meant in general. I understand the children part. I take it the adults are the one who conceptualized and spread it, though.

This is true. However, it does serve as a distraction. Sometimes all one needs is a momentary distraction to clear one's mind.

[It probably doesn't count if someone is an overgrown child, but he's very interested in Artanis' costume anyway, maybe even looking with his hands once the candy comes his way.]

"Goodness, sir! Even in Nova City I've never seen anything quite that exotic. What do you call it?"

[The only thing Ted will get for a response to his question is an empty stare from Artanis.]

I beg your pardon, but what are you talking about?

"Your costume, of course!" [Ted's own was simply his torso and arms; no legs on him.] "It's very detailed, only I've no idea what, precisely, it is. I should like to know the name."

[That was confusing enough, but then it clicked into place when Ted asked about Artanis's "costume."]

I...am not wearing a costume. What you see is who I am.

[Did this guy never pay attention to Nova City's news?]

[youfool]

[He reads the paper; impossible to avoid it, really. But he's not much for TV. Still, seeing Artanis in person is another story.]

"Ah! Well it's a good costume anyway. What's the name? Yourself, your species, your dress. And what's it all mean?"

[It's still surprising to Artanis. He was, after all, a deputy Guardian for Nova City, and the longest currently serving in the position.]

My name is Artanis. I am a member of a race known as the Protoss, also known as the Firstborn.

[He'll decline to comment on his outfit for now. Being Hierarch of the Daelaam means nothing in Nova City.]

[The newspaper is short on pictures; a lamentable lack.]

Artanis, pleasure to meet you. I'd offer to shake your hand, but I'm using mine to 'stand', so you'll have to take it on faith. What does that name mean, anyway?

[Curious how he's doing that, anyway.]

My people are the first race sought out by the Xel'naga, the progenitors of life in our universe, and the first in our sector to achieve sapience.

[He nods.]

"Firstborn in more than one sense, eh? But I meant your name in particular, Artanis. You're my only hope in understanding the meaning behind it, I'm afraid." [Despite the words, he looked eager. Big fan of onomastics.]

I must ask, why the unbridled interest in learning the meaning? You are the first person to ask me such a question, both in this realm or the realm which I call home.

[There seems to be a significant amount of confusion in Artanis's "voice." He honestly doesn't know what he's getting at.]

[He stifled a shocked laugh at 'unbridled'. If he hadn't taken special care to hide his centaur nature, he'd have taken it for a horse pun.]

"Then I in turn must ask why the Protoss never mustered any curiosity about symbols. Goodness! Unless they knew it already? Suppose that's natural.

Well, eventually sophistry must cease and we'll have to answer questions with answers. I'm interested because you are strange, which tends to pique these things. It seems a perfectly lovely name, but the love will remain incomplete while it is ignorant, so I simply have to know what it means.

Now, won't you tell me? It's as though you're building suspense or teasing. No need to be coy."
