Twelfth Reel: Rolling the Ball

[Closed Action]: A Meeting with the Mayor

The office of the mayor of Everglade is out of commission for the time being, so they convened to a new location for their meeting. Grell, Oswald, Marco, and the mayor sat in a room with a round table, refreshments for each person, a cup of tea and some biscuits, set in front of them. Grell is busy explaining the structure she’d like to implement for The Red House Foundation, with the papers attached to a clipboard. They pitch the initiative, citing the benefits it could bring to the city which could help improve current services and perhaps bring in new ones. The mayor seems to like what he hears, and asks how it will all be funded, to which she explains that donations will make up for 100% of the costs. She’s also taking a pay cut, so that the salary can go towards the foundation, as well as other vital services, like the Everglade Rangers.

Pleased with their proposal, the mayor reaches into his pocket to take out a pen to sign the papers, establishing The Red House Foundation in Everglade, and allowing the foundation to conduct activities for the benefit of the city. They all stand up, and the mayor praises them for their honorable efforts to alleviate the hardships of those less fortunate.

The mayor leaves for the door, stating he has work to do concerning his office building, so Grell, Oswald, and Marco remain inside. Once the door closes behind him and the footsteps fade, Grell sighs wistfully.

“I really do like him,” Grell states to her companions, loud enough that only they can hear, checking over the paperwork. Unbeknownst to the mayor, there was an extra item he signed. She peels away part of the clipboard, revealing another paper beneath with the mayor’s signature on it. “A shame he’s going to be replaced.”

The mystery paper gets a once over, and with a satisfied smirk, Grell tucks it away with the rest of the papers and places them back onto the clipboard and into her bag.

[Video]: Upcoming Charity Event

[The trio, with Grell in the middle, appears on the video feed. She’s also wearing the necklace Namur gave her.]

Good day, denizens of Genessia. As you are well aware, I am the new City Guardian of Everglade. My deputies are Oswald Cobblepot [gestures to him with one hand] and Marco [gestures to him with the other hand]. We’re here to talk about The Red House Foundation, which will now have its roots in Everglade. We’d like to renovate a building in Everglade, yet since the foundation runs solely on donations, we’d like to host a fundraiser event: A Telethon!

[ Oswald nodded gratefully to Grell when she gestured to him, and once again before he took his own opportunity to speak. ] It has become our ambition to extend our foundation’s reach to provide aid not just to families stricken by misfortune, but also to the lower class and homeless. Furthermore, these services would not be limited to only those in Everglade. Some might call such plans overly ambitious, but I truly believe that this is a cause that every single one of us can rally around despite any and all differences. This is about the greater good, after all. And what better to invest in than the greater good?

[Grell nods in agreement.] I couldn’t have said it better myself! We hope to be fully operational in less than two months, depending on how smoothly things go. More details will follow, so please keep a look out—

BARK!

[She stops abruptly in speaking and her left eye twitches. She knows that tiny little bark. Slowly, ever so slowly, she turns to Marco, looking less than pleased that the dog is still in his shirt pocket. He still doesn't even button his shirt...in winter.]

WHY?!

[Why is it still in your pocket, Marco?! Why did you think it was a good idea to keep it while they’re filming?! Why isn't he cold?! Why why why!!

At least someone had the decency to turn off the feed…]

Private Voice Message to the City Guardians

Now that the campaigning has finally finished, it would be nice if we could have a chat to try and get on the same page about things. At your earliest convenience, of course.

So you say, but my actions could have put a great many more people at risk because of my foolishness.

I just do not know. I cannot help feeling that if I had acted as I had intended, I would not be happy either.

[ She's also fully aware that this is a public conversation so she's not going to disclose everything fully. She hasn't even told Marco and Grell why she left, has she...? ]

Seconding. You and Ace do this all the time. Be selfish, and let your friends pick up the pieces, or you'll drive yourself into a tizzy trying to mitigate damages that can't even be dealt with until someone makes a move. Sometimes being selfish is just necessary.

This is not about being selfish though.

[ If there's one thing positive from this, it's that she knows her trust in Namur was well-placed -- it seems like neither of them knows exactly what happened.

Adela sends another text, one that's meant to be private between her, Marco, and Grell. It means that further prying wont' be needed, seeing as there's a certain amount of trust she has in both Grell and Marco too. ]

I confronted Battler. I was ready to kill him. I wanted to. But I did not. I still do not understand why I stayed my hand myself, only that I did and that I allowed him to walk free.

Espio was always like that too. So if you're looking for someone to explain why not to get revenge on someone, I'm not your man, eh?

[Rubs the back of his head.]

That said...

Pops had Marshall -- Teach, the man who killed Thatch, who betrayed Ace, who killed Pops, right under his hand and hesitated. Thirty years of loving a man is a hard thing to forget. Especially when you trusted them once.

He ordered me not to spend my life solely seeking revenge. That's not some good in me he was trying to bring out, it's because it's more important to keep the others safe, and he wouldn't want me killing myself over and over in the attempts for a fruitless vendetta.

And I can't pretend there aren't days I resent it a little, yoi.

[ There's a long pause when she's trying to go over Marco's message. She never knew the story went like that...

Finally, there will be a text to the two of them again. ]

I am not certain I understand, Marco. Is it that you regret not pursuing revenge against Teach, or is it that you believe my hesitance was because of whatever short-lived trust I had placed in Battler?

He did not murder me. He left me alive because he thought it would be more cruel. I have no such obligation keeping me from vengeance either, and yet I still did not strike him down. That man still walks free because of me.
