In the Middle Ages, it was seen that the birds--those wonderful, frivolous creatures--began to pair midway through the second month. That is, February 14th. Thus, it's been looked upon as a day specially consecrated to lovers. Those who choose each other under these auspices are called one another's 'Valentine', after a saint by the same name. Though that's more hagiography, if you care for it.
