I find myself in need of aid.

[ He clears his throat before continuing. ]

First, I should thank everyone for their assistance when I first arrived. You were all most helpful. For those I've yet to meet, [ He inclines his head toward the camera in greeting. ] I am Dorian of House Pavus, and I find myself in need of assistance once again.

Nothing so dramatic as my arrival, of course. I was simply wondering if anyone may have a recommendation from whence to acquire a viable and quality mage's staff, preferably of an Inferno aspect, or, more likely and more conveniently, where to acquire components with which to assemble my own. I'm well and truly capable of casting without the use of a foci, but in a pinch, speed and finesse is preferable to only finesse.

Then you aren't that unlike golems, though golems are...artifacts, really, nothing currently constructed. I've read about them extensively, though. Fascinating. I take it you weren't restricted from developing, then. What am I to call you?

You would be surprised how many people doesn't do that.

I admit my knowledge about golems is pretty limited. I was, at the beginning. Then my current partner reprogrammed me and messed up with the restrictions, allowing me to evolve my personality and directives.

Quite the contrary, I don't believe I'd be too surprised at all.

Of sorts. He would scoff at being called a hero but he's sacrificed a lot for a good cause. I did notice that trend with him and others too.

[Something in Kay's voice softens and he nods.]

It's easier now than in was the first weeks after I arrived at the city. We live together too.

Most heroes would balk at the moniker. I believe that's what makes them heroes.

[ He smiles. ]

One of many of them, yes.

True but at the same time most heroes don't like to get their hands dirty when it's needed.

Ah, that's good. Life's better with those around. I mean, still weird here, but more bearable.

Yes, more bearable, definitely.

Okay, some do but...it's different, in this case. How many soldiers do you know? Do you know what's the difference between heroes and soldiers? The sacrifices of later don't always get remembered or rewarded.

I know enough to know most heroes were just soldiers someone else decided did something brilliant enough to be remembered for.

There was, and there most likely will be again very soon. You know how Zealots bent on reclaiming a world that can never be again can be.

You do realize that is intrinsically impossible, don't you? Time doesn't freeze. I don't care where you are, time is time. An event occurred at one, finite, moment in the great sphere of the universe. It cannot be moved, so to say it has frozen is redundant.

It would be more accurate to suggest this place has mastered the ability to pull us from and return us to that self-same moment with 100% accuracy.

I know people here form my same universe that is from my future. I also know people from my same world that live in a whole different time line as mine. Time is a relative concept. And here, in this world, it matters even less.

But your theory is as good as mine, so maybe that's what did world did to us.

...yes, and all that makes sense. You see, you are from your singular and finite moment in time. The others are from their singular and finite moments in time. Mistakenly, people envision time as a...tapestry. It's more...a great sphere, you see, and contained within it, countless singular and finite moments. Some float near one another, some are drastically far away, like a pool of water. They could be above or below, right beside...and I making sense to you?

To be honest, I'm not sure what time is like. Maybe it's shape is something far too complex for any mind to understand. Perhaps it's even alive. Who can tell?

I've made good work of it, personally. I helped develop a magic capable of navigating it to a degree. It isn't perfect, at least not yet.

Then again, who can say it should ever be perfected?

Why thank you! To give due credit, and while I realize to love to brag, it was mostly my calculation that made it possible and my Master's experience and intuition that gave it life.

I have no problem praising people for their accomplishment when they deserve them. [Just as he has no problem telling people to their faces that they are screwing up when it's happening. Blunt sincerity, that's Kay for you.]

What did you use that power for?

What did I use the power for? Why, to return myself and my then new friend to the present after an unscheduled trip to the near future. My former mentor, however, attempted to use the power to escape punishment for his...decidedly short-sighted decisions. We were thrown forward in time when I interrupted his escape.
