ACTION [ota]
[Spock has devoted pretty much all of his free time since his arrival a few weeks ago to the Genessia Scientific Research Foundation in an attempt to learn more about the world that they’re all trapped on, hoping that a deeper understanding will help facilitate figuring out how to get off this rock. And while he trusts his peers’ work, there is nothing better than a first hand account. Which is how he found himself approaching the barrier. He hasn’t seen it for himself; maybe he can spot something that was previously missed. He’s been fully warned not to touch it, but a close look certainly can’t hurt, right?
Wrong.
He’s still a hundred feet away from the barrier when he feels it hit him: a wall of emotions unlike anything he’s ever felt. He can’t even make one out above the other, it’s just too much too much too much. Through the sensation his mind is racing. He’s not touching the barrier, nor was he trying to use any sort of telepathy when the sensation struck. It’s only been about three seconds and his mind feels as if it’s about to explode; this is far more intense than any meld he’s done before. His logic dictates him with one final thought before the surge overwhelms him and he crumbles to the ground: they were wrong about the barrier’s reach.]
((ooc: Spock has passed outhis first month here this has to be some sort of record and will awaken in the hospital in a few hours! Feel free to visit him there to make sure he’s okay, or berate him for being an idiot.))

You know damn well that's not what I mean, Spock. And you're the one who's usually all for how superior Vulcans are. So you want to tell me what the hell you were doing? I don't buy you just went for a stroll.
[He crosses his arms - it's obvious that he's not going to be letting Spock move a muscle until he's got some answers.]
no subject
You are correct in your presumptions, however I did not intend for any negative consequences. I went to observe the barrier that is keeping us here. I had been informed that it was harmless unless touched, however I began to experience the effects of it when I was no less than ninety eight feet away.
[ See Bones? Totally not his fault. ]
This likely means that the barrier's radial area of effect has increased drastically over a short period of time, however more study is required to conclude this finding.
no subject
And I'm sure Jim knows all about what you were planning, right?
[It was slightly petty, but McCoy rolled his eyes as he brought that little point up.]
In the meantime, you missed something. Whoever you've been getting your information from doesn't keep it very up to date. Unless it just doesn't like you - if that's the case I can't blame it.
no subject
The observation was meant to look for anything that had not yet been noted from several feet away. The likelihood of an adverse effect was negligible. I saw no need to inform the Captain of my plans, just as I do not inform him on the nature of most of my experiments until it becomes pertinent for him to know. Which it now has.
[He gives McCoy a pointed look at that last comment.]
The information came from the Schnee Company and the Genessia Scientific Research Foundation. I do not believe that they were aware that the barrier's reach had extended. There is a slight chance that is did react to me as it did due to my lineage, though; perhaps you would like to test that theory?
[Don't actually do that please, Bones.]
no subject
That's the point Spock. The information they gave you was out of date. You're lucky the effect of the thing wasn't instant death. [At the challenge, McCoy narrowed his eyes, lips pursing.] You know what? I just might get you some more data on that.
[He wasn't planning to go walking out there himself - that was idiotic. But he thought he remembered catching a glimpse of who'd carried Spock there. If they had to go close enough to get him, they should've been close enough to be effected.]
no subject
Yes, that would have been most unfortunate. [He's probably not nearly as upset by this prospect as he should be.
And his eyes are right back on the doctor because nope not okay. He wasn't supposed to actually agree to that!]
I highly advise against that, Leonard. We have no evidence to conclude that the reaction was due to my physiology. It would be ill advised to subject yourself to the effects of the barrier.
no subject
You're right - that would be ill-advised. That's why I wasn't planning on walking down there like an idiot. I'm going to walk down to the nurse's station to see if your Knight in shining armor is still here.
no subject
My knight in shining armor? [Well that gives him pause.] Are you referring to K-2SO? I am not certain that he would be subjugated to the barrier's effects at any distance as his is an artificial core.
no subject
Neither am I, but I thought you might find it interesting if it turned out he was. If whatever it is can effect flesh and bolts, that gives you something to work with, doesn't it?
[He's only a little smug. Really.]
no subject
That would be a fascinating prospect. It would imply that the effects are not neurological in anyway, though beyond that the results would be inconclusive without a deeper understanding to K-2SO's programming.
[Wipe that grin off your face, Bones. Spock is all about learning how to make AIs now thanks
where's chekov when you need him]no subject
Yeah, well, don't get your knickers in a twist just yet. All you're doing for the time being is resting. I wanna keep an eye on you until we know there aren't gonna be any side effects of your little experiment.
We'll see what it's got to say, and then once you're cleared you can start whatever new tangent it is I can practically feel coming.
no subject
I may require assistance with that new venture as I have no prior experience with artificial intelligence. Have you perchance met anyone who has?
no subject
Well, I'm guessing the genuine article might know a thing or two. If not? I bet he'll know who would. Said there weren't any experts on him in particular in town but, well, can't hurt to ask.
no subject
The location of the meditation is irrelevant but I can assure you that I would not fit in one of those. However it is prudent that I inform the Genessia Scientific Research Foundation of the increased reach of the barrier before there is another incident. I can rest in my own quarters afterwards if it would appease you.
[Many many hours afterwards, knowing the workaholic, but afterwards was afterwards, right?]
An excellent suggestion. I will arrange a meeting for us to discuss the prospect.
no subject
You want to tell them about your research? We got a nice bit of technology here that let's you do that and keeps your ass in that bed like I want. Use your damn communicator.
no subject
[He shoots Dr. Sass a pointed stare.]
I am fully aware of the the uses of the provided technology. And while I am confident in your abilities to take and read brain scans, they will likely wish to perform their own instead of rely upon another's interpretation. It is imperative that these scans are taken as soon as possible as any abnormalities may have already started to dissipate.
no subject
And don't give me bull about it needed to be done there. You want fast, you're going to get it a lot faster here than you would walking across town. They're welcome to my results and I'll make sure to get anything special they say they need.
[He turned without giving Spock a chance to respond, bringing his own phone to his ear and calling to reserve the equipment and get a few specific nurses down there. Then as almost an afterthought he turned back to Spock.]
By the way - if I'd known that I would have made more of an effort to slack off.
no subject
Spock's not pouting I don't know what you're talking about.]I do not believe that you are capable of such a thing, Doctor. You criticize the amount of time the Captain and I work, yet you work just as much, if not more; a doctor is never truly off the clock. [Look at Spock, complimenting Bones.]
I believe that makes you quite the hypocrite.
[Psyche.]
no subject
The two of you ever consider that if you worked just a little less I wouldn't have to so much? It's not called hypocrisy it's called dedication. Like you said - a doctor's never truly off the clock. When I work depends on when people need me.
Like now.
[The nurses would be there in a few minutes.]
no subject
As for needing you, I do not require your medical capabilities at this moment. If you were inclined to "take it easy," as you say, you are most welcome to.
no subject
[And now he's pointing at Spock.]
You damn well do if you want that scan without wasting the time it takes to get across the city.
no subject
[McCoy… has a point. His argument is perfectly logical, though Spock is loathe to admit it. Which in itself is illogical, he knows; it shouldn’t matter whose mind comes up with the logical solution so long as the state is reached. But did it have to be him?]
So you keep saying, and yet you have yet to commence any action towards taking the scan. In which case my departure would accelerate the process.
no subject
Oh, I haven't have I? You obviously don't think these phone calls have been for my health, so what do you think I've been doing?
[He, obviously, isn't actually looking for answers here and doesn't leave time for them.]
The hardware they've got here's on the bigger side. I had to make sure it was free, and that we've got the time to use it. These nice people - [He nods his head towards the door as a few individuals in scrubs come in.] Are going to get you down to the room the equipment's in so we can get this taken care of. You are going to cooperate, and since all you can do is argue I'll call to make sure what all tests they want run.
no subject
We are utilizing this facility's equipment? Would your tricorder not prove more effective? [And less hands on?] I believe you have mentioned the medical technology here is much less advanced than those we are accustomed to.
[Hey, he's a damn good arguer, okay?]no subject
[By now, the nurses are probably starting to try to get Spock moved.]
Maybe you should think of that the next time you're off doing experiments. Now, the more you cooperate the faster we'll get those scans.
[You may think that McCoy is enjoying this. You wouldn't be necessarily wrong.]
