Potpourri of Starters
WHO: Orihime Inoue, OPEN
WHAT: Orihime's getting settled into Genessia and embarks on many adventures in many places.
WHEN: September 25th - October 5th
WHERE: ERR'WHERE
NOTES: I put up a variety of starters of things she said she'd do or was planning on getting around to doing, but you're absolutely free to start up something new or request an additional starter to catch up with her.
Honestly, Orihime felt really bad about letting her plans fall through with Grell and the doctor whose name she still didn't know. The incident that Shinjiro had suffered couldn't have been predicted, but even so, there was a nagging twinge of guilt about it. She'd apologized and asked to visit again after she could take comfort in Shinjiro's well-being, again aiming for something in the morning hours when her presence was least likely to stir up hunger and hostility from the night-loving dwellers in Everglade.
Stepping through the Archway, the rush of raw spiritual energy was almost overwhelming. She was quick to tamp down on her own reiatsu to make her spirit indistinguishable from any other ordinary human's to those who were sensitive to such things. After all, she was human, her soul had just undergone a lot more training and was therefore stronger.
Still, she was surprised at just how many active spirits she felt in this city. Not all of them were content to rest just because the sun was up, either, but she kind of expected that. Only vampires were supposed to be truly nocturnal, right? And werewolves only changed when the full moon was out as far as she knew.
On one of those points, she would be proven wrong.
Orihime walked further past the archway so as not to block pedestrian traffic, heading for the busier section of the city with shops and offices. She tapped at her communicator. "I've just arrived. So far, so good!"

The first step to finding out about Kyrgyzstan cuisine at the Attleton library was learning how to spell it and where to find it on a map. Once she'd lugged out an oversized atlas and opened it up to see a beautiful full-color map of Europe and Asia and using Joruk's own information, she found the country soon enough and felt a small swell of triumph. Now she just had to hunt down the part of the library with recipe books.
That part wasn't difficult. Walking out of the library with only the maximum number of books allotted to her, however, caused her great sorrow. There had been so many cookbooks, and not just from Earth either! There were places she'd never heard of, with fanciful titles like "Poffins and You: Feed Your Pokemon Right!" She had no idea what a Poffin or a Pokemon was, but if she ever ran across one, she would have a resource to draw upon to feed that Pokemon right.
Sadly, only five books were allowed to her, so she'd picked up French Desserts, European Baking, The Silk Road Gourmet, Cookies Cakes and Confectionaries, and Desserts of the Islands. There were so many other cookbooks she wanted to research, but right now, the bakery dream had to come first. This way she could lay out hundreds of dessert ideas with Shinjiro and whittle them down so that the selection remained varied, but the ingredients appropriately utilized.
She hugged the stack to her chest as she trotted down the stairs of the Attleton Library, pausing to gaze in the direction of the university. Maybe, she thought, Scott had the right idea. An opportunity for education, especially given the high costs of tuition in her world, was something she should think about. Maybe she could even seek out astronaut training in Nova City!
Orihime sighed happily. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to pick up a course catalog...

In the streets of Genessia City itself, Orihime could be spotted on a daily basis moving to and from the grocery store. Every day, it was the same: she walked in, and about twenty minutes later, she walked out with her arms supporting a huge bag of flour, or occasionally sugar. On top of that bag were piled a few more ingredients that didn't seem to have any real association with each other. Yams and cheese. Wasabi, peaches, and noodles. Way too many strawberries. The ingredients themselves changed daily, but her shopping had become almost clockwork.
But her shopping trips weren't the only activities keeping her from being a recluse. She had plenty of shops she wanted to explore, especially those which specialized in selling baked goods. The last thing she wanted to do was infringe on someone else's star specialty item.
And, admittedly, an excuse to eat someone else's cooking was always very welcome, and she had no qualms about buying sacks of cookies or donuts to eat as she wandered around.
In short, running into her during her daily explorations was highly possible at some point.

[Everglade]
She might find she has company, as she walks through the ever present mists, a diminutive figure keeping to the shadows, walking quickly and quietly, trailing her footsteps, though not trying to approach her, not just yet, anyway.
Dammers has appointed himself an unofficial guardian in this place, and when the girl came through the archway, he spotted her coming through. And lest she fall afoul of some of the nastier denizens, he trails her, keeping watch over her.
Everglade
Very dull.
His tongue dragged over his lips, playing with the silver ring that looped through his lower lip. He's about to turn and head in another random pattern when he spots Orihime walking through the streets. She appeared out of place to him, like a single drop of sunshine in a vast scene of cloudy gray.
With his hands shoved into his pockets he walked closer, his expression relaxing into an easy smile. "Hello. Are you looking for something?" With the way she's talking into her communicator it appears as if something was going on.

She didn't notice that she was being tailed. Milton was fairly unassuming, and unless he had a unique and very noticeable soul of his own that might catch her attention, the mist would do well in keeping him concealed.
But as a large, looming mansion came up on her left, something about it pulled her attention toward the structure in a way she couldn't really explain. It wasn't familiar, she'd definitely never seen it before. But there was something about it. It felt as if...there was a trace of her somewhere inside. That was impossible, though, she'd never even been to Everglade.
And yet, Ted had mentioned another version of herself, so maybe...?
She approached the gates, and to her surprise, they swung open to admit her even before she touched the cold, black iron. Her hand jerked back as the rusted metal squealed. Was this...an invitation...?
no subject
Even so, she returned the smile, for he seemed friendly and polite. "Nothing specific! I just wanted to get a good feel for this place, and who lives here...if people can manage to get along. That kind of thing!"
She was also wondering if the equivalent of Hollows dwelled here too, since she could definitely feel some negative spiritual energy pulsing within that house. She wasn't about to go kick down someone's door and attack without good reason, though.
Turning to fully face Seth, she bowed. "Orihime Inoue, pleased to meet you. Do you live here?"
no subject
"I think the answer to that depends on the people. The particular situation with Everglade is that some here enjoy fighting, conflict and other unsightly activities. In other instances, it's a matter of survival or food source. With so many clashing goals, it's impossible to make everyone happy." Seth spent a lot of time wandering around Everglade. Partly for work and partly when he had nothing else to do. There was no pleasing two races when once ate the other in order to survive.
"Excuse me." Seth bowed his head in a formal greeting. "I am Seth Rim. One of the Deputies of Everglade. I am currently patrolling this area. Should you need assistance, I am at your disposal." It was his job but Seth also enjoyed helping people. While the world around his was dark and foreboding, his own aura was light and warm.
Even with his pessimistic views of Everglade, Orihime might be able to tell how much Seth cared about the city and everyone who lived there.
no subject
Then she caught the wink of metal on his wrist and she realized the truth of the matter. Ah, another one like her, then! "I'm Orihime Inoue. It's nice to meet you, Rim-san! Especially since you're a deputy. You'd know more about the area than most people, ne?"
And he did seem like a really nice person with the same ideals that she herself held.
"It sounds like a tough job," she agreed with a light nod. "Ted-san mentioned that it was legal for monsters to eat people after dark. But that was a year ago, so I'm not sure if that rule still applies."
no subject
Seth has lived for a long time and most of the monsters that he has met were human. "I know more than most. I patrol to protect the innocent. We do ask that little lambs don't go wandering around without an escort." It was like walking down the streets of New York. If you were from out of town and turned down the wrong way you were probably going to get shot or mugged.
"And Seth is fine. I have not earned the honor. Are you from Japan?" He had no intention of letting her wander around alone. Unless she was a fighter though she didn't come across as much.
[Attleton] /comes 15 minutes late with starbucks
He had been able to focus better on his studies and finish his assignments sooner. That why he was headed to the library to return some books, followed by his dog Horatio. He spotted a familiar redhead in front of the building and waved a hand.
"Ey, Orihime. Nice to meet you again."
no subject
"Sorry. That wasn't the right term to use," she apologized, and bowed more deeply.
Rising again, she inclined her head to answer his question. "Yes. Karakura Town, near Tokyo. You're familiar with that area?" she asked, genuinely impressed. A lot of people knew about Earth, sure, but there were also a lot who didn't. "Where you from, Seth-san?"
Well, at least she was using his first name...
no subject
The young dog trotting at his heels soon caught Orihime's attention. She'd looked pretty happy before, but now it appeared that the library steps were in great danger of having Orihime explode joy all over the place.
"AH! You brought Horatio-chan too! I'm so glad to see you both!" She dropped to sit on her heels, balancing her books on her knees so she could hold her hands out in open invitation to the puppy. Who could blame her? It was a puppy! She never got to play with those, her apartment hadn't allowed pets and none of her friends had any dogs or cats either.
"You came for some books too, ne? What are you going to check out?"
no subject
He didn't like to leave Horatio locked up inside the house. Scott took the pup with him to work and everywhere he went if it was allowed. The dog's ears go up when he sees the girl is so affectionate and immediately rushed to her arms, trying to lick her chin.
"Oh! Sorry about him. Horatio, down. Leave her alone..."
no subject
And the two of them were fighting to see who could show the other more adoration, Orihime trying to pet him while he wriggled his head back and forth to lick at her fingers. Could she just do this all day instead of whatever it was she had planned? If only she could be this open about how much she liked other people.
no subject
"If you really think it won't be a problem. It won't take me more than a few minutes. If he gives you trouble just tell him to sit, he knows that command."
no subject
Yeah, the two of them would be juuuuuust fine until he came back to get them.
no subject
"He knows another trick too." He happily informed Orihime, reaching into his jacket pocket for the bag of dog treats he carried with him. He offered one to Orihime so she could give it to Horatio once the trick was over. Looking back at the dog, Scott ordered him to sit again and then..."Shake."
Immediately, one of the dog front legs lifted up, Horatio offering Orihime his paw. Ain't he a good boy?
no subject
"I am. It's been a few years." Over 100. "But I used to visit Tokyo frequently, as well as a few other small towns that no one has ever heard of." He wondered if some of them where still there.
He smiled at the formality of his name. He'll take that as a win. "I was born in Greenland." It was a lie but one that he had told so many times that it felt real. Seth didn't know where he was born or where he was from. Greenland was the first place he remembered but since then he's been traveling all over the world. "It is very cold there."
Speaking of cold. "Are you cold?" it was getting colder out and night air mixed with the chilling fog of Everglade was enough to give someone the sniffles. Seth would hate to see Orihime's cute little nose turn red.
no subject
...No, probably not a good idea, not if she was going to be working in a bakery, running to the hospital occasionally to heal people in bad condition, training to be a better fighter, and exploring the five vastly different lands of Genessia. She'd just wind up neglecting a pet. And what would she do when the time came to return home? No, she couldn't possibly consider getting a dog.
Nothing wrong with playing with Scott's puppy, though!
She rose to her feet, books in her arms once more. "That reminds me, I need to return your jacket! I guess it was just so warm and comfortable I completely forgot I was wearing it, ha ha!"
no subject
She'd just pulled the neckline of her blouse to her nose and mouth to exhale a little warmth into her face when he caught her off-guard with the question. Sheepishly, she grinned and let her shirt drop from her hand.
"A little, I guess, but it's kind of to be expected! I'll just have to keep moving so my circulation keeps me toasty," she declared, giving her arm a swing as though to limber up her shoulder. She hadn't really noticed that nightfall had come so swiftly; everything looked so misty and dark all the time, the difference just wasn't all that stark. "Where are you headed for your patrol? I'm not holding you up, am I?"
no subject
"It's allright." He returned the smile, not all that concerned about the missing Jacket. "We had other worried in mind back then. Were you going home now?"
no subject
But she would much rather hang out with Scott and his puppy, no question.
"I guess I should. I'm working up design sketches for my future secret business. But I could bring your coat back tonight if you'll still be here!"
no subject
Seth shook his head as he began to shrug out of his jacket. "Here. Take this." It's cute like a suit jacket but lined and very warm. "I'm used to the cold and no. You aren't holding me up. This area is part of my patrol tonight and it's part of my job to keep you safe." Her and anyone else wandering around Everglade at night.
Sometimes Seth wonders if protection is the Guardian's true motive to these patrols but in the end, he didn't care. He'd help people because it was what he did best. "Can I walk you somewhere?"
no subject
His voice was teasing as was his smile. This was one of the rare occasion when Scott feel playful, because he was comfortable around Orihime.
"We will be out for a while, yes. But you can keep the coat if you like it that much. I can always get another, consider it a present."
no subject
Ahhhh, she was being rude, wasn't she? He said it was his job, and he looked so sincere and kind, it really wouldn't be nice to refuse him. Hopefully she'd remember to give it back this time, she kind of forgot to return Scott's.
So after she wrestled with her conscience for a moment, of not wanting to be rude vs not wanting to put him out, Orihime finally relented with a little smile and a nod. She pulled the jacket over her shoulders, and had to admit, it did feel nice, especially with his warmth still lingering in the cloth. "That's really nice of you. Thank you so much."
She cast another look back at the empty manor. She did want to look inside, but that would definitely take him away from his street patrol to indulge her strange sense of curiosity. She would have to come back to it later.
"Well...how about a quick tour to point out the most important places I should know about?" she suggested.
no subject
That wry grin dropped quickly as he just gave away his jacket so easily. OH NO! "I can't! I mean, it's still fall, it's chilly, and winter is coming, you'll need the money for school supplies!" Her books nearly toppled out of her arms in her agitation not to put him out. "N...not that it isn't a very nice coat, I do like it, but it's just too generous!"
He couldn't afford to go around giving coats to girls he just met, he'd be so broke! And then he'd be going to college while hiding in the boiler room, straining his eyes to read textbooks in candlelight, and then he'd go blind...!
no subject
"I can do that." He expected the night to be boring otherwise and the divergence will be nice. "There are a lot of spooky places here. I don't know if you care for ghost stories but each building seems to have their own. I haven't memorized all of them." He could at least show her the town hall, the guardian offices and then the more interesting points through the city.
He didn't know that she wanted to see the creepy manor or he would have taken her there too.
"So. Do you mind if I ask why you are choosing night to wander around and not during the day." It's naturally safer during the day time. "Do you have a way to protect yourself?" Normally, Seth didn't pry but this was more of a matter of work than it was personal curiosity. That wasn't to say he wasn't curious but he really wanted a firm answer on if she'd be safe out here alone.
no subject
And she thought the jacket was a very nice garment. She really needed to remember to return it before she left or else she'd get too comfortable and obliviously skip off with it.
"Oh, but I don't mind ghost stories!" she beamed. "We definitely had ghosts back in my world, so I'm used to them being around! And, er...well...I guess you could say I have some experience fighting them if we have to, so we should be okay."
As if she expected she might be the one protecting him. His spiritual energy was very unusual, though, that much she knew for sure. He probably had some abilities of his own, especially if he were a deputy guardian. She looked back at the manor. Over three years ago, the very devil himself, Lucifer, had dwelled there, and a previous Orihime had temporarily lived with him as she fought a losing battle with an entity that had taken up residence in her head. But this Orihime knew nothing about it...all she knew was that she could swear it had a trace of her own reiatsu there, as if she'd been there before. And it was driving her crazy as to how that could possibly be true if this was her first visit.
"What's that one's ghost story?" she asked, pointing to it. "It's really unusual." And weirdly familiar.
no subject
"This place can do that." He mused softly to himself, not expecting Orihime to hear him or reply to the comment. "There are ghosts here too. Not all of them are bad or need fighting. A lot of them just want someone to listen." Seth listens to the residence both during work hours and off the clock. He found their lives interesting.
Seth wasn't skilled at sensing energies. There were very few people in his world that had such gifts and those who did preferred to pretend that they didn't. The world was a very scary place if you could see more than what you were ready for. Seth's only skill was in sensing darkness, which was useless in Everglade. Darkness dripped from everything in this world. It had unsettled Seth at first but, over time, he had grown used to it.
"That house there." He pointed at a small house that sat comfortably between two other larger buildings. It was two floors with two windows on the top floor. In one of those windows was a light. "A young boy used to live there. It was… fifteen years ago." Seth was sure that the owner had said fifteen years. "He stood at the window and waited with the light on. It was said that he was waiting for his father to return. His mother begged him to come away from the window but he didn't. Little did either of them know but his father had been killed on his way home and turned into a vampire. One night, the boy stood with the light on and saw his father in the shadows outside. Excited, he ran out to the streets to find the pale figure of a man who used to be his father. The boy was killed. His father thought that he could change him too but he didn't know how. Since then, the old woman who lives there keeps that light on during the night. Hoping that the boy's spirit and the fathers, might one day find their way back home."
Seth looked down at Orihime. "What do you think?"
no subject
"I don't think it's true," she finally concluded. "Spirits don't usually leave the places that had a strong attachment to them. If a boy were killed here, I'd definitely be able to see him. I do feel two souls, but they're not dead." She supposed one of them was the old woman who kept the light on.
"But...it's a good spooky story, ne?" She smiled a little, and inclined her head. It was nice of him to make it up for her, or at least pass on what he'd been told, to sate her curiosity.
Whoever lived there now definitely moved in within the last three years, though Orihime wasn't aware. Lucifer hadn't been the sort of person who would lightly indulge a roommate in his manor.
no subject
"I was going for scary. The old woman who lives here is actually very nice." He's helped her a few times.
Seth looked over at Ohrimie curiously. "Is that what you're looking for here? A ghost?"
no subject
To answer his question, she nodded once, almost shy. "Yes. I can sense them too! Anyone with a strong soul, really. Yours is really strong as well." She beamed at him. To her, it seemed obvious that he was a lot stronger than a normal human. It didn't bother her in the slightest.
She hesitated before she responded to the last, however. "I'm not sure." She looked at the house again. "I mean, I came here to meet with the others and see if there wasn't something I could do to help keep the peace. But...to be honest...I can feel traces of my own reiatsu in that house. Like...a distant fingerprint, I guess. But I've never been here before, so it's strange."
no subject
He's only a little sorry. He had liked his story.
"I'm a special case." Seth replied easily. He was a soul and nothing else though it wasn't always the easiest thing for him to explain so he didn't.
Seth thought about it before looking at the house. "Perhaps it's a memory." He didn't know, he hadn't been in Genessia very long and he mostly just did things to pass the time. "I think you'll run into your group if you keep looking." He was sure of it.
no subject
"Yes, I guess you're right. Maybe we just got the meeting locations mixed up." She couldn't occupy his attention all night, especially if he was on the clock. Her shoulders wriggled as she shed the jacket and held it out to Seth.
"I'll check by the gate again. Thanks for keeping me company! And for letting me borrow your jacket, too, that was really nice of you!"
no subject
Seth planned to keep loose tabs on Orihime to make sure that she's safe, otherwise he'll leave her be. He didn't think that anything would happen to her while she was looking for the Everglade Deputy.
