[Private to Shinjiro]

[Orihime's excited face virtually explodes cheer and enthusiasm all over Shinjiro's phone. ~~Gross.~~]

It's here! The bakery is really here! It's on Nettle and 8th! I didn't want to go look at it without you there, so we can both see it for the first time at the same time. When do you get off of work? I can't wait to see it!

Shinjiro-san and I are happy to announce that Cake Town will have a grand opening this Sunday starting at 9 a.m. There are going to be free samples, coupons, and a chance for a spin on the prize wheel with any purchase!

[She pulls her hands into fists, eyes alight with passion.]

It's going to be amazing. Please come check it out! And if you can't make it for the grand opening, that's okay! We'll be open for quite a while, after all.

I wanted to thank all of you for helping to support our bakery, and storing my ingredients when they were in danger of getting wet and ruined. The bakery will be open an hour earlier just for you guys, and you'll get a VIP pass. Free bakery items for the whole day for you and a guest! We'll give you a guided tour of the facilities too, so I'll be looking forward to seeing you there.

Good, you’ll have a place t’stay again.

... I can quit the grocer job for now, considerin, till you don’t need my help anymore.

That’ll mean I can head right over. I just have the community service thing later.

That's great! ...Unless you changed your mind and really like being a grocer. If so you can just pitch in part-time when you're able! But it pays three times as much, so really, it's a good deal!

Anou...community service?

Yeah, pretty sure I ain't goin back to that job until I got nothin else.

[ It's good to know it's there, at least, right?

He frowns. ]

... The whole thing with the subarchway had consequences. I'm gonna be helpin out the Attleton Guardian Office for a while.

That seems a little unfair...

[He was in such a bad situation, why are they punishing him for that? But she has to admit, she doesn't know all the details. Maybe it's not as bad as she thinks, but that makes him sound like he's a dangerous criminal or something.]

[Even so, she's relieved to hear he doesn't mind ditching his old job. It's reassuring.]

So I'll meet you out front?

It is what it is.

[ He shrugged. Even if it was a bad situation, he could recognize he still hadn't made the best choice. And Shinjiro owned up to his mistakes.

.... Shinjiro had the habit, also, of casting himself in the worst possible light, it was true.

He nods. ]

I'll be there in a few.

I guess so. Let me know if I can help out!

[He won't, though, she's learned that by now. She'll just have to keep a close eye on him to make sure he's not burning himself out with both the bakery and the community service.]

[Wherever he was, Orihime beat him there. She got a head start the moment he said he wasn't at work, and she definitely ran the rest of the way. So there she is, head tipped back at the sight of Cake Town, her eyes open wide and shining with admiration.]

[It's just so beautiful...!]

[ It doesn't take long for Shinjiro to join her, though, also looking up at the bakery, for a moment.

And then he looks at Orihime. Now, there's a sight. She just looked so happy.

He nodded. ]

They did a damn good job, didn't they?

[If she were any happier, there'd be two of her. Owning a cake shop has been a personal dream of hers for a long time. And now here she is, holding two sets of keys in her hands. She almost can't believe it's real, but she's holding the keys in her hands.]

[Her head turns at the sound of Shinjiro's voice, and she approaches to hand him his personal keys. She's dying to look at the apartments up above, but they've got to do this right.]

It's everything I wanted. I never thought...!

[Orihime almost chokes on her words, and hitches her shoulders sheepishly. She should probably look at the inside before she breaks down into tears of joy.]

Want to do the honors?

[She gestures to the front door.]

[ Shinjiro could almost see her sparkling, that's how happy she looked.

He shook his head, but gave her a very small, gentle smile. ]

Nah. This is your baby.

[ Puts a gentle hand on her shoulder, hoping it wouldn't ruin the mood. He nodded his head toward the door. ]

Go ahead. I've got your back.

[She hesitates, looking at Shinjiro, then the door. She can't deny that she really does want to, and if he's sure...]

[Her smiles warms at the touch to her shoulder, and she nods.]

Okay. Thank you.

[She takes a breath and inserts the key. The deadbolt retreats back into the door with a click, and she pushes slowly inside. A little bell jingles above the door and Orihime's head jerks back.]

[omg they have a bell]

Shinjiro-san, a real bell! Just like a shop should have!

[She holds the door open to let him in as she takes a moment to gape at the interior. The display cases are so beautiful and pristine. There are racks with baskets waiting to be filled with bread.]

[And there's a guy painted on the wall pointing a cake on a sword at another guy who looks surprised and excited to be offered delicious desserts.]

AH! THAT'S PERFECT! The murals are exactly what I was hoping for!

[...Did she tell Shinjiro she was going to ask for those? If not, welp. Surprise!]

[ Shinjiro can't quite banish the little smile he's wearing. Especially when Orihime's reactions keep bringing it back. Her little hitch of breath before opening the door - her excitement at the bell - the dramatic door-opening ...

And then he looks at the mural, staring a moment.

He laughs.

It took him by surprise. It also made him think - good. Really, good. This place was going to be memorable. Orihime was going to serve awesome food, and nobody was going to forget the place walking in. This was certainly a place he'd have gone back to, if they had something like this in Iwatodai.

He was really happy for Orihime. ]

Wow. All right. I think this place is gonna be a hit.

You really think so?

[She loves it when he laughs, she decided. This place will be good for the both of them, a place they really want to be, where the work won't feel at all like work. It's a labor of love, and she absolutely loves this bakery.]

...Me too. I'm so excited.

[And she's pushing up the counter bar, half-ducking beneath it, so she can see what they've got access to behind the counter. The cash register is cool, and it looks like it's probably easy to operate. She'll have to play with it to make sure she's got it figured out before they open. Then she's examining the crepe station with open approval. It looks so fancy. She'll...probably be eating a lot of these, especially since she now has the freedom to put on any topping she wants instead of being restricted to a menu.]

We should get customized aprons, ne?

[ Shinjiro's peering around too, looking at how they grouted the floors, examining the display cases - looks like the refrigerated ones were set up right, best he can tell - the griddle surface on the crepe station looked nice ...

He was regretting a bit that this was probably temporary, for him. But he was very glad he'd be at least here to help support Orihime getting this place on its feet. It was exciting. Even if he wasn't smiling openly anymore, he was still pleased with how things were going. ]

Dunno. A plain white one would work for me, I think.

[ He's a little distracted, looking behind the crepe station, checking for the small emergency fire estinguisher - there it was.

Shinjiro wasn't the type to burn food, but accidents happened. He wondered where the first aid kit was. ]

Wanna check out the back?

[ That's where the real meat of the work would be done, really. He hoped the ovens were as nice as he was picturing in his head. ]

That's only okay for the back! In the front, you're as much a part of the bakery's soul as the food we make, if not more! Customers should remember you without hesitation.

[She'll think of something, if he doesn't. She's definitely got creativity to spare.]

[His question prompts her to freeze on the spot. And grin. AND RACE INTO THE BACK AT TOP SPEED. One of the doors swings wildly behind her, thumping back and forth as it slowly settles into place.]

IT HAS A DISHWASHER! I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THOSE BUT THEY PUT ONE IN ANYWAY! ...oh cool, what's this one do...

[ ~~That was probably for the best. Shinjiro had terrible fashion sense.~~

He didn’t see how anybody could forget Orihime, at least. Girl was like a force of nature. Case in point - he watched her dart into the back, and shook his head, chuckling. Yeah. This place would do her a world of good.

Shinjiro followed her, more sedate. He was still drinking everything in. ]

And a good thing they didn’t, too. Bake trays are huge. Bet they’d be a bitch to wash by hand.

The mixer blades look pretty heavy too. It'll be much easier to clean them this way, and faster too!

[She's currently examining one of those mixers, and switches it on just long enough to watch it swirl around the big metal bowl. She lays her fingertips together, delighted.]

Once I figure out how much batter these hold, I can work on converting my recipes for bigger batches.

[She slowly paces through the kitchen, taking note of the bread slicer, the shrink wrapper, the big racks full of trays and pans...]

AH! Look how cute the cake decorating station is!

[She points excitedly at the big white counter, complete with a small turntable for the cakes that can be spun for easy icing. There are lots of cubbies for storing icing tips, decorations, and other little items necessary for her craft. There's a window too, which not only lets in some light, but allows people walking by to witness the cake decorator at work.]

I have so much practicing to do...

Congrats on the new bakery, Orihime! You got it all ready so quickly, it's amazing. And thank you for the VIP pass, I'll be there of course.

Good! I was hoping you could make it.

And I can't take all the credit! It's something Shinjiro-san and I have been working on together for a couple of weeks now, he gave me all kinds of good ideas!

I wouldn't miss it for the world. I had no idea Shinjiro was helping, I'll have to scold him for not telling me.

[He's clearly only teasing. He knows this was a secret.]

Ah ha ha ha! Well, maybe he was a little shy.

[She rubs the back of her head, clearly pleased at his positive response.]

We're on our way to check it out now. Then I'll probably be busy baking and preparing all he supplies until the opening, so I might be out of contact for a while!

The bakin times will need a bit of adjusting too.

[ Shinjiro is examining the ovens, the giant mixing bowls, the big proofing drawers, and then goes towards the walk-in fridge, lost in thought. Initially, this place was pretty big for a small two-person operation, but if her Sunday opening was a hit? They had tons of room for more staff, so lots of people could work at once, baking to meet demand.

Everything looked high-quality, in good shape. He approved. And, he’d take good care of all the equipment to keep it that way. It’d save her money in the long run, if everything was maintained well.

He peeked in the walk-in fridge, looking around at the supplies in there. Seriously. Nice. ]

Hey, come take a look at this.

I think we’ve got a walk in freezer too.

That's true. The heat can circulate a lot more easily in a big oven like this, so it'll probably take less time, ne?

[She can't wait to see what it smells like when she's got racks and racks of bread all baking to a golden brown. It's gonna be so good!]

[At his call, Orihime hastens toward him, leaning into the cool space. Her breath turns to mist as her expression brightens.]

Ohhhh...we can keep the perishable ingredients here. And the special orders too!

[He's right, there's another door in the far back with a big shiny latch. Orihime slips beneath his arm to open it up and look inside. She hugs her arms and smiles.]

We might be able to make ice cream cakes later. I'm n-not sure what else we'd put in here yet, though.

[ Shinjiro resolves to do a lot of research and look at the manual for the ovens, too. Baking at volume means he doesn't want a lot of wiggle room for error. Last thing he wants to do is burn any of Orihime's supplies and lose her money. At least, with all new equiptment, they shouldn't have to worry about weird hot or cold spots in the oven.

He had an immediate answer for her in regard to the freezer: ]

Puff pastry dough.

It's a pain in the ass to make, and if you want to do it here? Better to do a huge batch at once, and freeze the leftovers.

It'll still be hours of work, but we'll be able to plan it out better, rather than wastin a lot of time every day makin the dough.

Maybe, yes. Or he is just very good at keeping secrets. [Scott's money is on the later.]

That's fine, it's a big things for you two so I imagine you'll be really busy. I hope all goes as planned.

Hours?!

[She tips her head back, thoughtful.]

Come to think of it, I've never made my own before. I guess we should if we want our desserts to be as authentic and homemade as possible. It'll depend on how busy we get, I guess.

[And she's had enough of being in the freezer, so she hastens out. She's only got a jacket on, since it's only just starting to dip into colder temperatures for November.]

Maybe we can freeze cakes and dough there too, if that'll help them keep longer.
