II. A Disaster In the Making [video]

young olivier U-Um, excusez-moi...?

[A shy looking wisp of a boy peers into the screen looking quite baffled right now. He's dressed quite handsomely in a billowy white shirt that is a little too big for him, a charming waistcoat and a pair of dark linen breeches. He looks quite confused, almost fearful as he somewhat shies away from view. His hair is a little messy in the form of brown bouncy curls but overall, he looks neat. Almost like some sort of little lord-ling.]

Has anyone seen Count de la Fère? [He pauses briefly.] My father, I mean.

He'll be terribly cross with me if I'm late for my lessons. I...I don't remember waking here. Is this some kind of a prank?

[The dear boy pouts.]

I bet this was Thomas' doing.

[Olivier cannot help but admire that business-like tone. It has a slight aristocratic air to it, almost lordly. The boy smiles a bit as he dips his head in respect.]

How very true. Thus, I must prepare while I can. [This is why he must return home with his brother in tow. The de la Fére name rests on them.]

A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Monsieur Heller. [His speech is formal but inviting.] A book keeper? Do you work at a shop?

You must be good with arithmetic.

I work-

[For a few loan sharks, card counting for grifters, accounting for less than scrupulous businesses with more than a few skeletons in their closets... and under their floorboards and in some cement blocks and a few in the Hudson-]

Odd jobs. Whoever needs my services at the time. I'm very good at arithmetic, you won't find anyone better. Mother says-

[Adults don't reference their mothers when bragging about their business skills. He tries again]

I say that I've a natural talent for organization, calculation and memorization.

Then color me impressed! [The lad smiles some.] You might be no older than myself but you're already a "man" who knows his worth.

[His smile diminishes some as he thinks about himself and his brother.]

You have found purpose in such short time. I'm certain your mother is proud along with your father. May his soul rest in peace.

I'm thirteen, I'm a man now, so it's my job to help provide in the absence of my father. It's something that should be expected of me.

If my mother is to be proud of anything, I should like her to be proud that I have procured a profession with an acceptable wage.

[Well, acceptable enough. They weren't exactly rolling in cash, but they weren't about to get evicted either.]

All the more reason to get you home safely.

[A tense sigh escapes Olivier as he glances out the window towards the courtyard below. An idea strikes him.]

Let us meet in person. Perhaps we can uncover the truth behind this phenomenon together,

Outside?

[He finally got up, peeking out the window for a moment. His nose wrinkles.]

...

Well...

[Well, what? Well he didn't want to sit in here all day. The people walking the street still looked so unnerving and alien to him, but...]

... Alright. Let me get something first.

[Namely, a broom. He had to have something to defend himself with. Just in case]

How do I find you?
monchou: (❀ that's a little unsettling)

[A sympathetic expression crosses over Olivier's face once he hears the boy's hesitance. The poor fellow might be a "man" but he's a man trapped upon a world that's alien to him. Olivier can sympathize halfway since he's just as lost as Mordecai here but at least the people outside look like him. That's the only plus factor here.

Poor Mordecai doesn't have such luxury. He'll be stared at for certain.
]

Perhaps it will be best if I were to come to you instead. [The boy says as he searches for something.] We could possibly be in danger and if so, I might as we'll take my sword with me.

[Yes, the boy's armed with a silver rapier that gleams dimly within the shadows of the room.]

No ills will befall us, Mordecai. I will protect you.

[He smilies vaguely.]

Can you describe where you are? Perhaps a picture of the residence...?

[He was already clutching the broom, eying up the door to the place as if it were some heavily padlocked, well guarded prison door instead of some cheap faux wood piece of crap.

He didn't want to go outside, sure. But he couldn't stay in here all day, could he?
]

You have a sword?

What if someone has a gun?

[How morbid, Mordecai. Who the hell is gonna shoot a kid? A kid that looks like all the other hairless monkeys outside? He takes a moment to process his own stupid question, then sighs]

I mean... You'll probably be fine. I don't think anyone outside is going to mind another hairless pixie person. I can protect myself. I'm sure everyone outside can be easily persuaded to be agreeable with simple logic.

I'm-

[Oh yes, this thing displays moving images, doesn't it? He flashes the phone around the room, somewhere in the commons it'd seem. The room is spartan, one couch, one overstuffed chair. A radio and an empty highball beside it.

On the floor, apparently by a pantry door, there's a full vodka bottle laying on its side, still stopped, and a box of tea cakes. Pretty cheap looking in here
]

Here?
