Tcha! After the Great War like people were more worried about rebuilding cities for like humans than rebuilding zoos and like all those places. And then there was like the signed agreement of Minimal Impact which made those places illegal because like the idea is to like, you know, not interfere more than what is like needed in nature. So like capturing animals even for keeping was a big no-no. Besides, like the radiation from the bombs caused like mutations on several animals and that's like even more reason to not get involved, see?

Dad loves like octopus dishes but like I can't never taste any of them. They are all like super bland for me. Do you like them?

[Nods.] Yeah zoos and aquariums are also to try to research and preserve species that might go extinct otherwise. Although places like SeaWorld are really coming under fire as being really bad. They keep whales which are too big to really have enough room to move, and force them to do tricks.

[Shrugs.] I think people like it for the texture not the taste. Like chewy onion rings but without the onion taste and more chewy like cheese. I'm too picky. Miller said I was worse than her two year old. I'll eat it, but it's not my thing. If I want chewy, I'd rather have a churro.

My world like kinda decided that the best way to preserve species and all was to like leave them all as alone as possible. [Laughing.] So I have like never gone to a place like that.

Of course that like opened the gates of a huge black market centered around like animals and species from outside the cities. People would like pay crazy amounts of money for like a wild pigeon.

[She smiles as he comments about being picky.]

We have black market on animals too, but that just adds to the security of zoos and aquariums and it's considered even more brutal than a regular murder.

Well, there's exotic animal parts on the black market, yes. And some live ones raised by idiots who usually get eaten by tigers or whatever. Even professionals have been mauled. The black market has a lot. But poachers usually kill and sell just parts, shark fins, tiger paws, elephant tusks, et cetera.

[Sticks his tongue out, but then grins.] Hah. So you really don't need to eat regular food at all? And it won't do anything for you?

I think that like in my world it's more about living animals, though like I wouldn't be surprised if like there are parts sold around too. But like it's easier to actually hide that you're like selling around living animals than like parts of them, you know?

Toby's bussiness and feeding like basically depends on that idea. Though he doesn't like really deal with the black market, he just like makes people think he does.

[Scrunches her nose and makes a pouty-mocking face at his tongue.]

Well, it will like do something, I mean, my body still like processes the food but it doesn't like really gain anything from it. I've not been in like a position where I can like not eat for long periods without raising questions but like I've spent a couple of days without eating and I have not felt even a bit hungry.

But if I go without like feeding on hugs or handshakes at the very least... I like switch and that's like not good at all.

Depends on like how much attention people pay at what others do. And like in my country at least all the builds are soundproof so like whatever happens in one room isn't like heard in the others if the door is closed. So unless they like go out with their animals or were like seen through windows no one would notice.

[And a head shake to her final question.] Just stick with me when I'm cooking and learn what you want. It'd have to be hard if you can't taste anything but the most extreme. But I'll try to show you the easiest stuff first in case something happens. And your favorites.

But like if I cook I want it to like be for you or Sora. I don't like need to learn my favorites. And like isn't cooking like simple chemistry? So long as you like get the amounts right it should like be fine, right?

[Face crinkle.] Nah, it's more an art. That's why people buy coffee at shops instead of out of a can. Skill and care can put a lot into it.

You can mechanically do a painting, but it won't have the same quality or finesse.

That's why I was trying comfort foods. There's most emotion and energy and care put into it than basic survival.

Because it's like pointless anyway? I don't need food and while my body like processes the food and all it's not affected by it, I could like cook something poisonous and not realize it. Or something that like tastes horrible and there's just not really like any reason to do it.

I just was like curious, you know? I've like heard my mother say multiple times that she like hated cooking but that when she began to like cook for my father it changed and now she loves it. And like there was the time when Odette had a guy she liked and she was like making a huge fuss about cooking for him even just a sandwich. So I just like wondered what would like happen if I tried.

But like there's no point to it anyway. And like I could use the time spent trying to like learn to cook working on cases. I like hate to waste time doing something that like ends not giving any result when I could have been studying clues. It like doesn't sound fun to think of Sora and you like getting food poisoning or something just because I was like curious.

[She shrugs, resting importance to the matter and hoping that she has made her point across.]

[So she can't do like her mother, cook for the two guys she has been referring to as her "family" and see them enjoy something delicious she has made with her own hands. It's okay, no big deal.]
