first hunt [action]
GENESSIA COMMONSPACE
[ The groggy haze hasn't yet exactly worn off this demon hunter here and Nero finds himself crashed on the bed he has in this (temporary) room of his. Arm draped across his eyes, he's about five seconds away from conking out where he hopes when he wakes this will all be a bad dream, when the sound of WHATEVER THAT IS keeps him from doing so. With a scowl, he throws himself off the bed, yanks open the door (and nearly off its hinges oops) and- ]
Hey! You wanna keep it down?!
[ He'll just yell that down the hall to whoever or whatever that is. ]
GENESSIA CITY
[ Moving down the streets with a scowl on his face (not like he ever wears another expression) is a white-haired, sword strapped to his back with a glowing blue arm guy. He's heard the spiel about this place, is annoyed with this whole kidnapped by spirits shtick going on here, and can't remember the last time he actually ate something so that's where he's headed. Or hopes he is.
The first food place he finds, he drops some of those red bills down and asks what he can get with some of this and, as he waits for his food to be brought to him, if you're staring, he's gonna feel that... even address you without looking over. ]
Take a picture, it'll last longer.
[ That, or, he's going to be sitting there at whatever table is available, head in his hands and clearly just DONE with this place already. ]

[She folds her arms loosely on the table and leans forward. No pictures, but only because all she can see is the back of his head. It'd be funny, but not something she'd stick in a photo album any time soon.]
I'm Yang. So, now you know one person. Lucky you, right?
[Yang grins, her eyes twinkling. She kinda doubts he'll agree with that.]
no subject
Yeah, great. Guess we're best friends now, right?
[ Someone is a little grouchy in case that wasn't obvious but it doesn't help that he's hungry, tired, and annoyed with being here. ]
no subject
[The sarcasm doesn't bother her. It's actually a little nostalgic.]
I could buy you lunch... But you'll have to share my table.
[Yang smirks.]
For a name, I might even throw in dessert.
no subject
It's Nero.
[ His name. ]
no subject
[She grins warmly, lifting her metal hand from the table and offering it for a handshake.]
I'm one of the deputy guardians in Nova City, too. You need someone to rely on until you've got your bearings, give me a call.
[Yang turns her head and lifts her fingers, signaling for a second menu.]
no subject
But that metal hand... now that is something that has his full attention and he stares to it for a moment before he reaches out with his own glowing blue hand and gently takes it for that handshake. ]
Deputy guardian? What's that? You protect the city or something?
[ Someone needs a job and demon hunting might not be a thing here. ]
no subject
[She snaps her left hand and points with a grin and a cheek-click.]
You catch on quick! Five cities, five guardians. Each one has a number of deputies. We catch criminals, issue warnings if there's something weird going on in the city, patrol the streets... And there's the paperwork too, of course. It's been pretty peaceful for the last several months, but apparently it always gets rough in the latter half of October.
[She wants to ask about his hand, but they only just met. Telling someone how she lost her arm isn't the kind of story she just goes and dumps on strangers, after all.]
Judging by that sword, I don't think I'll have to worry too much about you.
no subject
Unless you got a demon problem that needs to be taken care of, don't know how much use I'll be getting out of her.
no subject
[She juts her thumb over her shoulder, toward the unseen and distant gate to Everglade.]
That said, we've got some pretty docile demons living here too that aren't too interested in eating people or their souls. I don't think it'll be too hard to tell the difference.
[The waitress approaches to take their order, so Yang chooses a steak sandwich and fresh fruit with a root beer. She waits for Nero to make his order as well before resuming their conversation.]
How long have you been in the demon hunting business?
no subject
The food he chooses, however, is your standard burger and fries with a coke or whatever's closest before he looks back to Yang here. ]
Few years, I was a Holy Knight for this Order back home even if I thought it was a load of bull.
[ It was only out of respect for Credo that he even bothered to join the Order, Nero not one to believe in God or anything, nevermind his lone wolf nature. ]
But all that sorta went to shit so now I'm kinda just freelancing you could say.
no subject
[It's not idle flattery, because his claims don't sound like idle bragging. He's probably good at what he does, and she's growing more curious about him and his capabilities by the moment.]
Maybe you should try out the bounty hunting gigs around town. There's a guild you can sign up for and pick up a few jobs that might be up your alley. Pay varies depending on how tough it is.
[She fumbles a little with the wrapper of her straw before pulling off the paper and jamming the straw into her soda.]
You'll see more bounties in the paper. Don't have to be part of the guild for those.
no subject
A guild, huh?
[ Well, it's something he'll have to check out for himself since he's sure that money is bound to run out and his welcome stay in that room back at the commonplace won't last forever. ]
Thanks.
[ A beat. ]
For... the info and stuff.
[ He means the food as well but words are hard. ]
no subject
Any time.
[Her head bobs once, and just then, their food arrives.]
Well, eat up! If you want, I can give you a ride to wherever you need to go. And if you've got more questions, hit me.
no subject
I have no idea where I'm going.
[ Nevermind how long his stay is going to end up being. ]
no subject
[She spears a cube of cantaloupe and pops it into her mouth.]
There's the employment center if you want to see who's hiring...apartment buildings so you can scope out where you want to live and how much you'll need to make as a result...or we can just cruise and I'll show you around. It's my day off, so I can spare the time.
no subject
You mentioned five cities.
[ A pause as he stuffs those fries into his mouth and swallows before he continues. ]
What's the situation on them? Are any of them worse off than the others?
[ He's mostly talking about which one might have higher crime activity. But, not knowing much about this world, who knows what else might be a thing to be concerned about here. ]
no subject
[She has to think about that one, so she chews on her sandwich for a bit before replying.]
Attleton's got a problem with the mafia from what I've heard. Everglade's got the most supernatural activity, and tensions between humans and non-humans makes for an explosive atmosphere. There's been effort put into finding alternative food sources for the more peaceful denizens there, but not all of them want to share their living space with "food."
[She hooks her fingers indicatively.]
Fayren's got the occasional rogue mage causing trouble. Nova doesn't see a lot of action, but technology theft is pretty common. I wind up busting a lot of carjackers. The main city itself is quiet unless one of the newbies flips out. Most handle the situation well enough but you can't really blame the ones who don't, y'know?
[She shrugs and picks up her sandwich again.]
If I had to guess, Everglade is the most dangerous, just because there are things there I'm not equipped to punch. If you've got a way of dealing with ghosts, then you've got a leg up on me over there.
no subject
Can't say I've ever come across a ghost before. Just demons in all shapes and sizes.
[ Really. From scarecrow looking ones to gigantic statues, he's seen quite a few over the years. ]
Guess you wouldn't recommend getting a place there then, huh?
no subject
[She puts down her sandwich to lean back and appraise him as she cleans the steel of her right hand.]
I don't know you well enough to judge just how gung ho you are about fighting monsters and protecting civilians. I can only guess that you're good at what you do without seeing you in action firsthand. But if that's what you're into? I'll be the first to bring you a housewarming toaster.
[Her smile returns with a flash of teeth.]
I mean, if I were the average citizen, I'd sleep a lot better with a demon hunter for my neighbor.
no subject
I'll keep it in mind.
[ Although it's probably a safe bet he'll end up there at some point. ]
What city are you in then?
no subject
Nova. Just bought a house along with my roommate. Saves gas.
[She winks.]
Why do you ask? Planning on dropping by for a visit?
[Idly she stirs her root beer with the straw, ice cubes knocking together. If he really does wind up living in Everglade and protecting people, he'll get more than just a toaster. That'll earn some big respect points in her book.]
no subject
[ To which he takes a sip of his own drink while looking to her over the brim of his glass; he's not using a straw, no. ]
How long have you been here then?
[ Since, apparently, one's time here is for an undisclosed amount of time. ]
no subject
[She taps her jaw thoughtfully.]
I woke up here several years ago, then one day I kinda wound up back home again. Not a whole lot of time passed there, but when I woke up here again last October, a few years had already gone by, and my teammate was a lot older. So I guess...two years total, more or less?
[Her hand drops again so she can pick at her fruit.]
Everyone goes home eventually, and time won't have passed back on your home world until you return. I don't know if that's any comfort to you or not, but it is what it is. Some people show up here and prefer to keep doing whatever it is they did back home for the sake of familiarity. Others use this place to start a new life...maybe one they normally wouldn't get to enjoy.
Whichever it is for you...and you don't have to decide right away...I've got your back. So take your time, catch your breath.
no subject
So, he falls silent and slowly chews on a couple more fries as blue eyes stare down to his plate of food. ]
What's this place to you?
[ He asks then, a glance up to her through white strands of hair. ]
no subject
[Yang's smile fades and her gaze drops a little, her brow furrowed.]
...Honestly...I don't know anymore. This place let me get close to a lot of people I knew from Remnant. People I wouldn't normally have around. But...it also sent them away just when I was starting to like their company. And it sucked.
[She props her chin up in her left hand.]
I don't plan on getting bitter about it, but it's not something you can just shrug off easily, so...I dunno. Some days are great, some aren't.
[Yang flicks a grape onto his plate.]
So far, this day's not too bad.
[The grape rolls into the ketchup.]
...As...long as you like ketchup on your fruit, I guess.
