[ Regan is using her device today to introduce herself to the town at large and she looks a lot better than she did before. For starters, her clothing is new and her hair is tied back in two semi messy French braids. And she’s in a bedroom that’s starting to show signs of a young girl living in it. To her left on the desk she’s propped her device on, a white board and colorful erasable markers. To the right? A pile of cochlear devices. She picks up the whiteboard and scribbles out a message for all to read. ]

Hi! My name is Regan. I’ve only been in town for a couple weeks and I have a question.

[ Erasing that message, she writes a newer and slightly longer second one. ]

I was born deaf, so I use American Sign Language to communicate. Back home, I had a lot of people in my life who understood it and could communicate back. But here? I don’t have as many. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in learning so that I had more people I could talk to?

[ Its really not a bad idea, honestly. She gives people time to read that one and then writes again. ]

I also need a job. I have no idea what I could do or anything done I haven’t had a job before. So if anyone has anything a deaf thirteen year old might enjoy, please let me know. Thanks.

[ Emma's out (obviously) but she still saw the message and she texts Regan a couple minutes later. ]

You know you don't HAVE to get a job, right kiddo? I know the whole public school thing isn't really gonna be in your wheelhouse and I get that, and I get wanting to earn some of your own spending money, but it's not a HAVE to.

[ Regan has been home for a lot of the day, just adjusting to the sounds of their home and the sounds in that part of Genessia. And taking the occasional sound break. For over two years, she's lived in silence. Most of her life before that had been spent hearing to a point. Her cochlears didn't give her one-hundred percent hearing. She had the knowledge that there was sound and she could differentiate. But it was a lot to get used to. She texts Emma back. ]

I know. I want to be useful. Someone said I could teach ASL at the university. What do you think?

I think you're definitely smart enough to do it, but it sounds like an awful lot of responsibility.

[ Be a kid, kiddo! Don't try to be 13 going on 30! ]

What's something you like to do? For fun I mean. What are some things you're interested in?

I like reading. And when we could make noise, my brother and I played a lot of video games together. I wasn't that good at them, but we still had a great time.

And I like fishing and learning to cook.

Cat cafe, maybe? Or the library?

We should look around and see if we can find an arcade. That'd be a fun job.

Guess what? I'm going to help test food and a haunted house. That's my job. We can visit the cat cafe for fun.

That sounds awesome kiddo! I should probably meet your boss before you get started, though.

It's like a building full of video games, my son loves them. I don't know if there's one here, but surely somewhere. I'll look into it. It'll be fun.
