[Can’t a bloke fade from existence without ending up in some place that he didn’t plan to be? This was hardly what not existing should look like. Unless he died instead of fading from existence. Then that would make this place Hell or possibly Heaven. He’d assume the latter. He just finished reading the little flier, and he’s finding the stuff a wee bit hard to swallow. So after messing around with the device for a while, he decides to say something.]
So what the piece of shite pamphlet said is true. Someone just brings our arses here and dumps us off here? And for what? None of you figure out that bit of info yet? There’s gotta be a purpose for all this.

Either you lot are just bad a figurin' this stuff out or the ones doing all this business are just good at hiding it. [He was going to assume the latter for the moment because he had no evidence on the former.]
What are these archways you are talkin' about?
video;
[The phone sweeps away from Kid's face, showing a blurry image of a city street before settling on a grand archway.]
This one in particular leads to Everglade, known by most to be somewhat dangerous for the unprepared.
[Lingering there a moment, it eventually turns back to Kid.]
Although I suppose it's better if introductions were made. My name is Death the Kid.
video;
Death the Kid. Sorta a morbid name that you got there. Names David Haller. Nice to make your acquaintance.
video;
A pleasure, Mr. Haller. I was named after my late-but-no-less-exalted father, whose role as Lord Death I have recently assumed.
[So matter-of-fact.]
video;
video;
Precisely and exactly.
[Isn't it nice when you don't have to go on and on explaining what you are? What a delightful surprise.]
Where do you come from, if I might ask?
[It's not common around here that someone identifies a reaper on 'hello', after all, he's curious.]
video;
Earth. Unless you mean a specific place, in which case I've moved around a bit. California, Paris, Scotland. Though for sure the next place I was gonna add to the list was "non-existence" but looks like it'll be Genessia instead.
video;
[A satisfied nod, and Kid moves on, assured that his awareness of reapers was a product of his origins. After all, Lord Death did make his base of operations in North America.]
Non-existence? What a waste of a soul. Tell me, why would you seek your own eradication?
video;
video;
[No, Kid is not making a mockery of it, he's just heard this sort of thing before. It's something of a staple among tales about heroes and their acts of derring-do. He went to an academy with a fair number of them!!]
Perhaps you made the wrong decision, but not with poor intentions. While you are here, it might serve you to revisit it and decide for yourself if making the ultimate sacrifice really would have had the desired outcome.
[Your moment of unsolicited advice brought to you by the letter D.]
video;
[He appreciates the advice, though.
Sorta of funny to hear a Grim reaper telling someone they should continue to live, though.
video;
That much, I couldn't say. It's a lesson I'm learning along with you.
[Who can really go on saying what it is one can expect to really learn here, when Kid has yet to figure out what the whole point to being here is.]
Life is precious, as are the souls that give of themselves to it.
video;
video;
[He shrugs, unbothered.]
It wasn't so in Death City, where my late father was beloved by the students and faculty of his academy, where the next generation of gifted humans were trained to defend or lead.
A reaper's duty is to the souls of the living as well as the dead. I'm surprised to hear you lived in North America but did not know this. Are you another from one of those other Earths I've heard of?
video;
My Pops made a school for people like us where we could go to and be safe, because regular humans aren't exactly fans of us.
video;
[There is admiration there; the reaper loves humans, that much may be obvious. For all their imperfections and mortality, it was these fragile, vivacious beings among whom he was raised.]
The situation of these people with this 'X-Gene' you speak of, they remind me of the Weapons of my world, and how some humans, fearing what they didn't understand, persecuted them.
How ironic it must have seemed to them that these same Weapons would eventually become the right hands of those who tirelessly defended them from those that would threaten civilization. It was a sad chapter of our world's history, but one I am glad to have put behind us.
