[Well, hello, Genessia, you done being nutso? If not, too bad, because Maka is here anyway rolling a ring back and forth on what looks to be a desk. Since when does she have a ring? Who knows, she wears gloves mostly so how would anyone know. What's she thinking? About that--]

I'm getting rusty doing all this hanging back stuff, I haven't fought with a weapon or even had a spar in a while. Guess I don't make much time for it with work.

[A pause.]

Bah, I'm just making excuses, I'm starting to sound as lazy as Soul. Anybody know about a place where weapons can be bought or something like that?

[Yep, that's...that's definitely a thing.]

[Wait, that voice sounds like it's coming from behind her. So, too, the sound of a door closing.

Which would, of course, be because a certain young and somewhat newly-ascended god has just invited himself in. Without so much as a hello or an if-you-please, even!

[She stops mid-huff both when she realizes that someone came in without her noticing.

It takes another moment to process the voice that spoke.]

[Then, as though shocked by her chair, Maka bolts up and faces the uninvited death god.]

...[She thought he went back home, she thought that she was just alone here with her dad and a creepier Stein now. Not seeing Soul in a while is bad enough, but after that...exchange she had with Kid, reassuring him that she'll be there with him through his grief, well...]

[It felt like that getting ditched thing she hates so much.

It's not with a whimper or a bang that she acts out next, it's a tentative step and then a full RUN INTO HIM to throw her arms around her friend.]

You stupid jerk, you stupid jerk! Where have you been?!

[Ignore the insults, she's actually really relieved to see him.]

Ah...I don't know anybody named Ruby.

[But she's not much of a social person as a whole, shhhh.]

Do you know where I'd find her usually?

I don't have the tools, and we weren't exactly taught stuff like that in art...

[Funny considering she goes to a murderdeath school.]

Unless you mean get really creative and use a fork or something.

[Oh. Oh, shit--Maka immediately snatches up the ring and puts the hand holding it into her lap, as though that would erase any evidence of people seeing it.]

O-of course I do, it was Mom's, I wouldn't let something like that out of my sight.

[Papa is smiling like an idiot, lopsided. He hadn't wanted to make her uncomfortable, but to know that she still kept it--and with her--meant a lot to him.]

I'm glad.

[Kid's reflexive step backward at Maka's advance merely ends up with that impact marginally "softened" by his back having a sudden rendezvous with the door behind him.

Spare them any knock-knock jokes, gosh.]

[There's the old rigid fussiness startled out of him, before he smooths down his own ruffled (and proverbial) feathers. You're wrinkling his shirt, Maka. This may or may not have everything to do with why he's darting his gaze around uncertainly.]

--Napping, to answer your question. I understand I lost track of time.

[How do you lose track of time and nap for months without noticing?

IT'S BEEN MONTHS!

[That awful sort of desperate shrill tone only when Maka is truly upset comes out, and she hates it, but she can't control it.

He's going to have to learn to accept it, because she's not letting go, only squeezing tighter as though he's going to vanish.]

Napping. You freaking idiot, I was so worried, I thought you ran off on me again.

Hmph.

[No, not uncomfortable, just embarrassed. She realizes it's immature to keep acting like she doesn't have feelings of sentiment, but it's a habit at this point.]

By the way, Kid decided to drag himself back home. I already boxed his ears for leaving.

I'm glad he's back. He came by the hospital last night.

[The weapon glances off the screen.] I was worried he'd gone back.

Though I don't know that boxing his ears really solves any problems.

[Apparently it doesn't take much to make a god flinch, just have That Shrill Tone and you're good!

...Or maybe that's the pang unique to guilt twisting in the pit of his stomach, because wow, that conversation felt like literally just yesterday to him.

Months.

The timing of that 'nap' really couldn't have been worse.]

I wasn't exactly consulted, either!

Of course it doesn't, but it makes me feel better for being left alone the past few months.

[And that's something she's not happy to admit, so of course the tone is cold.]

No offense, but I don't really make a habit out of hanging out with my dad and a short kid that says I'm useless.

...And I don't know what happened to Soul, either. It's just been me, Papa, and...a version of Stein.

[A small child that looked at her with total detachment and said "useless." Exactly that, she's not a weapon, she can't be used. Refuses to be used. Fuck that, fuck that.]

I didn't touch your room, though, before you ask.

There's nothing wrong with that.

[Though her words weren't meant as such, he can't help but cringe. Nobody wants to be told that it's no good to spend time with them.]

Stein is under the impression that his opinion is always right. Trust me when I tell you it's still pretty much crap...and will stay that way for a good ten years or so still.

[Somehow he had the feeling just saying not to listen to Stein wouldn't carry the appropriate weight--she would need to be told why.]

I heard something about it.

[And Soul's lack of presence had been duly noted; thus the 'admitting defeat' comment.

Though he can look forward to experiencing whole centuries the way humans do decades, he in his youth has a frame of reference for how long months can feel, particularly alone.

This is why, after some awkward shuffling and sorting out just where to place his hands (the center of her back seems both appropriate and sufficiently symmetrical), there's so much lean reaper-arm encircling the Meister's shoulders.

He's bad at this, better at the reassurances of a soothing wavelength, but at least he's giving it the old college try.]

Know this. That you are not alone, and that I have no intentions of changing that.

[And he understands what it's like, being half of some greater whole.]

[She really doesn't deserve such good friends, particularly not when she blows up at them the way she does.

It takes a moment, but Maka's feelings of anxiety settle and she's able to loosen her grip somewhat on Kid.

This is a really abnormally profound moment, the meisters standing there holding each other, Maka watching his eyes contemplatively. That awkward and uncertain expression, the quirky three rings in his irises, yeah, it's Kid, he's back.]

Do, o God, no evil deed. Live on, do good.

That's how all boys are.

[As if Maka is never under the impression that her opinion is right when it's not? Come on, Maka, don't even pretend that you're not aware of that.]

Maybe Kid can...[sigh] Papa, I'm sorry, I can't pretend that I understand what you've been taught as a weapon, but I really think you should leave any control of Stein over to Kid now.

[Her statement has the immediate effect of banishing any traces of uncertainty and replacing it with his more usual sobered neutrality.

This lasts approximately ~~seven~~ eight seconds.

Then it crumples into a kind of subdued spasm, complete with the sort of boyish snort that suggests laughter.]

Pff--

Well put, I rather like that one.

[Do try not to sparkle with delight too obviously, Kid, it's not becoming. IT'S JUST A PALINDROME.]
