1st Chapter | Action/Video
[Action]
[For a good three hours the new arrival sat frozen, not far from where he woke, too scared to move. This must have been a dream, and maybe if he refused to react to it, he'd finally wake up, back in his own room, where it was safe and the closest thing to reality shifting was the video games he played. That's how it worked, right?
It wasn't working.
After some pathetic sounds that sounded close to sobs, a fit where he outright panicked and shouted for his friends (or anyone) later, Mikoto steeled himself and stood up, gripping onto the folder like it was a lifeline.
He took two steps before he sat back down and retreated within himself again. Yeah, no, he's not going anywhere.
Still... He played with the videophone in his hand a little. At least one thing made some sense in this place. It wasn't too different from his phone back home. After some hesitation, he turned it on, his face barely visible and eyes averted to the ground.]

My name is Mikoto Mikoshiba and I need a job.

[action]
[ She seems surprised... considering all that just happened, not a miracle. ]
Well, I was doing extended secretary work back at school as well. The academy I go to is specifically geared towards educating the political elite of the country and I... happened to pass the examination to become one of their assistants.
[ Didn't want the job particularly much, got good grades and got it anyway, then did it dutifully. ]
[action]
[He looks pleased but his insides are churning. He has nothing to offer like that. He's just a normal high-schooler, not the smartest, richest, or good-looking.
Okay, maybe the most good-looking with Kashima being a close second.]
So it must not have been as hard for you to learn that. Did you go to a private academy?
[action]
[ It's worded like it could be bragging, but her voice is entirely flat. She doesn't think this is a majorly big deal - and really, for her, it isn't. It's just what she was raised to do.
A waiter comes by to take their orders and Augusta orders a tea. ]
[action]
[His voice comes out a little higher than normal, like he can't quite understand how casual she can be about it. But the waiter is a distraction, and he ends up stumbling over his words before he finally settles on a coffee.]
[action]
For me, it is largely a matter of birth privilege though.
[ She adds it as an afterthought as the waiter has already left and shrugs with a small sigh. ]
[action]
[If you were born in a wealthy household, generally, you didn't have to worry about certain things. He understands that. Being an upper-middle class, only child, even he's never really had to want for anything on the material spectrum.]
[action]
[ Considering 'the country's elite' is pretty much noblemen in Kuchen's monarchy and all. ]
[action]
It doesn't really matter how you got there though, does it? Unless you don't want to be there.
[action]
That's quite true. Speaking of which...
[ And here she raises her hand to her chin pensively. ]
... that really could apply to our situation right now as well.
[action]
[He suddenly looks afraid, his mind jumping to the worst possible outcome. She's going to all this trouble just to help him, and here he is, completely oblivious to the fact that she didn't really want to. He was being selfish.]
Okay, you don't have to.
[action]
And then Augusta actually chuckles. ]
I meant being transported to Genessia as such, not this outing.
[action]
I figured that, I just wanted to see what you would say.
I don't want to be here either, but I suppose it's not that bad if I get to be around you... [He rests his chin in his palm, staring at her before he seems to catch himself and sit as far back as he can, pulling his knees to his chest.]
[action]
It is bearable, really. I'd much prefer going back to my country, but you can live here rather comfortably as well.
[action]
[It's not just the fact that it's unfamiliar, Mikoshiba can't help but feel completely helpless. This wasn't a video game where you could manipulate the outcome, or, worst case scenario, hit the restart button. It isn't like at school, where he could find an empty classroom or hide in the bathroom if need be.]
I don't see how.
[action]
A lot of people express difficulty settling for just that, and I agree, but I think it's important to work with what you are given for the time being.
[action]
[He knows he's being petulant but he doesn't care.]
I just want to go home.
[action]
[ Despite her off-hand attitude about her position in society, she cares deeply about her homeland and fulfilling her duties in her assigned place. ]
But that's not possible now... I don't mean to say we should stop trying to find a way, it's merely that we're not accomplishing anything by living in denial either.
[action]
What sort of things...I mean. What do you like about this place?
[He might as well try. Maybe it's not that bad. As much as he doubts it.]
[action]
[ She does silent for a moment, a break that is conveniently bridged by the waiter bringing this drinks. ]
The garden park is beautiful, the library is fascinatingly well-stocked, most people are quite welcoming to strangers and help them get settled and Attleton, the city I live in, is nicely quiet. It's a quite random assortment of things that come to mind, I'm afraid. I've not been here very long either after all.
[action]
He's hesitant to ask what he really wants. She's from a different time period, so she might not judge him, but he doesn't want to risk it. He can figure out if they have video games on his own. If they don't, he has no idea how he'll manage here.]
It sounds surprisingly normal.
[action]
The stranger happenings are mostly in the other three cities, particularly Fayren lately. There's... a lot of supernatural creatures living there. But considering the cities are separated, it has been fairly easy to avoid out-the-ordinary experiences for me so far.
[action]
I don't know anything about stuff like that! [He waves his hands in front of his face, desperate to downplay his knowledge.] It's what anyone would think of when they hear the word supernatural!
[action]
Yes, like that. It's pretty impressive, but I've not went there often. There were dragon attacks lately.
[action]
[So it's not exactly digital women, but it's pretty close. Enough for him to lean forward in excitement, before he catches himself and rests his chin in his palm instead.]
That's stupid. What kind of dragons?
