Chapter 5 | Video | backdated to March 13th

[Armin turns on the video, more frantic than when he first arrived. From the background, it's obvious he's both outside and moving somewhere. There's a definite note of panic in his voice.]

Has anybody seen Eren? Does anybody know where Eren Jaeger is?!

[He's distraught enough that he doesn't even bother setting his post to private before expanding on his post in a message to Mikasa.]

Mikasa! Mikasa, I can't find Eren. He's not at home, he's not answering his phone, and he d-didn't show up to lunch like we planned. I th-think... I think he m-may be gone...!

[It's a little unclear, but anyone who knows him will be able to tell that Armin is crying. He prays to all the gods he doesn't believe in that he's wrong. Hell, he'd beseech the Trumps if it would bring Eren back to him. But as he'd said, Eren was nowhere to be found.]

Well, does it help if you're not the only one crying here, Armin? No? Sorry, she's one of the least helpful people right now.]

...I haven't seen him and I don't know where he is... ... I can't contact him either...

[and she hates admitting, that maybe he's right about Eren being gone from here.]

H-has... has he left me again...?

[Armin's crying more obviously now, his breath shaky and unsteady. He looks devastated, if less energetic now. But for him, this is the third time Eren's left and he's thought he'd never see him again. He's just... not sure if he can handle it again.]

[What? Again?] A--

[Then she catches that pretty fast, when she remembers that he's been somewhere else too.]

I'll help you look for him, okay? He might be somewhere.

[Seriously if Eren got himself something like kidnapped instead of being ... gone, she's going to make sure she punches him so hard that he'll need to grow back some teeth.]

[Mikasa was actually in the middle of a break time while at work when she heard Armin's not-so-private message. The moment he said he couldn't find Eren, she froze as she stared at the scared blankly. Eren was... He was missing? Call it inner panic that made her freeze up, but not too long after she had turned to the teacher she had been helping out and told her that she had to go.

Not even waiting for a response, she left grabbing her coat and putting it on. She would have to explain to the teacher she was helping out that she had to find her best friend, but judging from how panicked Armin, she was sure she probably heard most of the message anyways.

Running towards home, she finally flipped on the audio.]

What do you mean he's gone?! He... He has to be around her somewhere! Did he go out to catch a bounty?

[That's what she's trying to make herself believe. Eren couldn't be gone... Not now.. But she does notice that crying from Armin's end.]

I don't know! He d-didn't... he didn't s-say anything about it like he a-always does...

[How many times would he lose Eren? He'd seen him eaten once, eaten to save his life, and he'd disappeared as a Traveler too. Now he might have left Genessia, and like the other two times Armin never got to say goodbye at all. Except somehow, here, it was worse - because he had to see its effect on Mikasa once again. Tears streaming down his face, he shakes his head, feeling like throwing up.]

I'm s-sorry, Mikasa. I'm s-so sorry. I'm sorry...

[Mikasa had been crying a lot lately, which was uncanny for her. Or rather... not so much that she was crying but crying in front of other people. Though there are no tears coming from her yet, shock and worry was clear on her face; if her feed was on video. She probably would cry again knowing this, but for now she had to keep it together. She was tired of crying, even if she was likely to do it later. For now she had to be strong for both of their sakes.]

It's not something you can help, Armin. It's okay... He has to be around somewhere. Where are you now?

[He has to be around somewhere. Except he didn't. Not in this reality, anyway. But if she's not giving up... Though he knows it's foolish, he knows it'll only hurt worse later, Armin gives in to the hope that she's right, the hope this is all just a big misunderstanding. Perhaps he simply went out and forgot to charge his phone. Surely they'd see him tonight?]

I... you're r-right. We'll. Keep looking. [He looks up, almost guiltily, when she asks where he is.] ...I'm near Fayren. [Except he's not headed in from Genessia, but from the caves. The caves Eren often hunted goblins in.]

[Somewhere in her heart she knows he's just gone, but all she has is to believe that he's still here. It was probably foolish to believe that, but denial was setting in.]

I'm on my way then.

[And with that she's already setting her destination towards Fayren. A little while later, she arrived near Fayren searching around. Along the way she'd searched for Eren too.]

[Armin doesn't respond, because there's nothing more to say. Instead, he makes his way to the gate and meets Mikasa there, not sure where else to search. She doesn't need to know he went into the caves - where Eren takes many of his bounties - without a way to really protect himself.]

Mikasa!

[He looks shaky and uncertain, though her presence helps, a little. Even if Eren's gone, he's not alone.]

[That would probably be a good thing, since she would be a bit miffed that he did go in without any way to protect himself.

Upon arriving, she knew they had to find Eren of course. Although she felt that with how shaky he was, maybe a short hug would help reinforce that he wasn't alone.]

We'll find him.

[He's surprised by the hug, but quickly returns it, taking a deep breath. It does calm him - Mikasa's right here, and she's not going to leave him. Oh please, don't let her leave him.

He's steadier when he pulls back, even if, inside, he knows this search is hopeless. He nods seriously, ignoring his instincts.] Where else should we look?

[Despite what she might say, she knew deep inside that Eren was most likely gone... Still, she couldn't believe it. She was still in denial because he couldn't be gone...]

Where have you looked so far?

[...Yeah, he's either going to have to lie or tell her about the caves. And he won't lie to Mikasa. He takes another breath.]

He didn't show up where we'd agreed to meet for lunch, and I couldn't reach him on his phone. He wasn't at home, or the gym, or the store, or any of the usual places in Nova City. I tried a couple places he liked to visit in Genessia City too, and none of the bounty offices have seen him either.

...Since the goblin caves are where he goes most often for bounties, I looked around there, too, but there's no sign. Th-that's when I called you.

[There is a glance that suggested she wasn't happy about that, but right now there were more important things to do. He can gather from that that she didn't approve of that when he didn't have his gear.]

Well, There's always the other cities, although I don't think he went there as often but.... who knows...?

[If it helps, he did bring along a knife. ~~A kitchen knife he grabbed off the counter because it was nearby.~~ Not 3dmg, but not totally defenseless.

He refrains from saying 'we would know', but only barely.]

I d-don't know. I can't think of anywhere else he went very often, and nobody else seems to know anything.

[Any sympathy Jean might feel is clouded by his resentment. So he's not as concerned as he would be, but he figures he should say something. It wouldn't help anyone for Armin to run around in a near hysterical state, so he mentally and emotionally distances himself, replying more gently than he normally would.]

I don't think he's here anymore.

[Maybe it's not like Armin to lose it this much, even over Eren - but this is the third time he's lost him. First at Trost, then when he disappeared as a Traveler, and now here... would he never stay with them?

At the moment, he doesn't seem to remember that he and Jean aren't on the best of terms, or notice that Jean's being distant. He simply turns to Jean, looking desperate and devastated.]

H-how can we tell for s-sure??

He probably went home, Armin. It happens from time to time. There's no way to tell how long any of us are going to be able to stay here.

[ She can't tell he's crying, but that doesn't mean the panic is any less obvious. ]

Is... is th-there any way to tell for s-sure if he's gone?

[Yyyep, those are tears on his face. He's not sobbing, but the crying is pretty definite, now.]

You said you tried calling his device, right? There's a different sound for when a line is disconnected and when someone isn't answering.

[ She feels sympathy for him, she just.. honestly has no idea what to do to try to make him feel better. Most of her comforting involves rationality. ]

Even if he is gone, it's entirely possible he'll come back. He just.. may not remember the first time he was here if he does.

Koishi had been looking around the forests of Fayren for something to eat. While she could simply ask her sister for money or mooch off of Satsuki, she was still a youkai. And what better way to satiate that urge than hunting your own meal? She didn't plan on killing anything too large else a good portion would go to waste. Fortunately the forest was absolutely filled with smaller animals such as rabbits and foxes, both of which she could easily catch, kill, and carry home. And failing that she could always go fishing. Her sister wasn't overly fond of killing animals but she would no doubt appreciate the meat and fur.

She paused just as she grabbed a third rabbit by the scruff, lifting it as she turned toward a faint sensation. It was the psychic pull of someone in distress. Wrapping her tendrils around the little creature, she ended its struggling painlessly, adding it to the others she was carrying before following the source of the disturbance.

She recognized that mind... And sure enough she ran into Armin before long, looking quite distressed. Instantly she stepped out and approached him, her calming aura reaching his mind even before she had focused to make herself more visible. Hopefully she would be noticed. "Hello Mister. I felt your distress from far away and came to see if you were okay. Please don't panic. I'm here. I want to help."

Calm down kid, so what if he's not here anymore?

[it isn't like senji really cares who comes and goes... it's just like prison to him, after all. shit happens.]

What... What do you mean, 'so what'? H-he's my best friend, the c-closest thing I've h-had to family since I w-was ten, and I've lost him again...

It's not like he's dead, right? So you'll probably see him again.

Armin, Armin-- You need to calm down for a second! We'll find out what's happened to him. We just need to stay calm is all.

[ he smiles, though it's a pained one. he...he knows that he's probably gone. he's gone back home. he's gone back to fight the Titans without everyone else... ]

[Armin makes an effort, but his breathing is still fast and uneven, his voice desperate. The tears on his face are obvious now.]

I've lost him three times, Marco. I... I d-don't know if I can do this again...
