[Danny hated the entire Christmas season. That hadn't changed.

But last year he'd made a promise to give it a try this year. To try and keep from ruining anyone else's enjoyment of the season.

You know what really wasn't helping with that? Christmas decorations. Everywhere.

And they kept reappearing. He'd already taken five trashbags full of decorations out of his apartment, and they kept showing up again.]

Somebody please tell me there's a non-Christmas place to hang out. I mean, we've got a huge area here. There's gotta be at least one place where all this Christmas stuff hasn't gotten. RIght?

There was quite a bit of fumbling before a familiar green eyed face appeared on the screen. "Umm... Chireiden was decorated too by someone but sis and I don't actually celebrate Christmas. Or, rather, we come from a culture that doesn't really celebrate it. I must say though, everything smells quite nice now. And I don't really mind the decorations."

"You can hang out with us if you want. If you don't mind animals. Sis has lots of pets."

The only way to escape Christmas; the only area that is left totally unmolested by festive decoration is one's heart.

I wouldn't recommend it though. It's a good way to get visited by the three ghosts of Christmas, which like to torment those insufficiently spirited.

Ted was tittering. The poetry was too tempting not to go for.

" *chuckles* Are you saying, Koishi, that a surefire way to escape Christmas...is to go to Hell?"

...I wish I had answer that you'd like. But I seriously haven't seen one place without them up yet.

And trust me, I'm not really a fan. I don't mind decorating, but come on... at least let me make the decision to do it on my own.

(Mark sighs. Well, at least it wasn't like his own world where the things would start popping up right after Halloween or even before in some places. But still, yeah, it was a...surprise.)

Sorry, kid.

Koishi has to respond to this xD

[personal profile] koishi_komeiji 2015-12-07 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Eh? Mister Spades? When did you get in the call?" She looked rather puzzled before brightening. "Maybe! I bet there are some other places but Chireiden is a good place to start I guess."

A pause. "Also I live in old hell. It's not hell anymore. It wouldn't be good to live in hell. It would be super unpleasant. But old hell is nice... well... its really cold right now since we can't light the furnace and its winter. But still. We can always light the hearth and we have lots of blankets and sun lamps."

"Not that I know of. You can come by though if you want a break from all the celebrations and stuff going on." A pause. "Oh! Be careful though. We have a raccoon named Scribbles and he likes to steal shiny things."

[ Not trying hard enough. Seems Danny Downer over here hasn't learned a very important lesson about humility: if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.]

"You're from Earth, aren't you? Have you ever read that novel? 'A Christmas Carol'?"

Can't stop giggling. Not for anything.

"Well spoken, Koishi. Truly there's no truer truism: it is not good to live in hell."

(What.) ...Hold on. What? You took out four trashbags worth and they keep popping back up?

(Mark had been considering taking some of them down tomorrow. He's no Scrooge but it's embarrassing to have his apartment look like the something North Pole threw up.

Now he knows to not waste his energy, but still, he is actually puzzled and disappointed and even a bit annoyed by this development.)

The paper says it was Santa who did that...if so, Santa...what the hell? Not cool to decorate without asking.

"I... Don't understand." Koishi looked a bit baffled. "What's so funny? Why are you laughing? I wan't to know the joke too."

"Hah, well the humor is lost upon explanation, but if you insist.

Christmas and hell have...very different moral dimensions. Very, very different. As different as their temperatures; the one being a wintry holiday and the other being an unquenchable lake of fire, where I imagine they don't celebrate very much.

The contrast was irresistible, forgive me."

"Oh..." There was a long pause. "Different moral dimensions? Isn't the purpose of hell to punish those who were wicked? Once the punishment is over though the yama will send them somewhere else. So..." She frowned, very confused.

"Also, old hell is cold. So their temperatures are the same..."

[personal profile] youfool 2015-12-07 07:24 am (UTC)(link)

"Hmm. Your hell and the one I'm familiar with have a few differing details, especially with 'yama', whatever those are. There's something ironically funny about hell offered as an alternative to wholesome holiday healthiness. In the end, that really is the only decision to make, isn't it? Good cheer or misery. Holidays or unholy-days. Hope in the cold, or the gnashing of teeth in the fire. Christmas or hell. Scrooge was certainly threatened with as much. I wonder if your sister ever reads Dickens?"

"Oh! A yama is one of the kings of the afterlife. When a human dies a shinigami ferries their soul to the other side of the sanzu and then they are taken before the yama to be judged. Then they are sent to be reborn somewhere like as an animal or as a human or somewhere else entirely. Like the Celestial Plain or the Netherworld... or Hell."

Koishi looked thoughtful. "I met a yama once. The YamaXanadu, actually. She was very nice to me, but also very serious. It must be a really tiresome job."
youfool: (Default)

[personal profile] youfool 2015-12-07 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"...Huh. That must be trying, both for the judge and the judged. It can't be a pleasant job. But how exhausting, to be wrung in that Buddhist-like wheel of reincarnation. In my world it was strictly 'one and done', with only a small handful of exceptions among the resurrected."

Maybe the sub archways?

[She wasn't sure about that since she didn't have a sub archway herself.]

I guess someone doesn't like the holiday? Is there a reason for that?

"Tiresome?" She sounded confused. "I'm not sure what you mean. Humans are so short lived it would be cruel to only give them one chance to live. And this way they can start anew every time so they don't grow bored with life... Unless they choose t become youkai or gods or something. But then they also cease being human. Same goes for animals."
