1st Duel [Video]

There's a shot of the sky before the view reorients itself. Then, suddenly, there's a tanned face staring at the screen, looking surprised and annoyed all at the same time. What's strange however, is that the hairstyle looks eerily familiar, except for wild and said figure is decked out on an outfit probably more suited for a desert than his current environment. Not to mention... is that gold?

Surprisingly, though, he doesn't seem to be that out of place using the device. Probably from all that exposure to technology thanks to Yugi and the others.]

I'm fairly certain that this is not where I was supposed to be.

[ Because last he remembered, he was in Egypt, Ancient Egypt. Not... here, wherever here is.

Not to mention, if he wasn't trapped in the world of memories any longer, shouldn't- ]

And if anyone could tell me where Yugi Mutou is, it would be greatly appreciated.

I would show you my Duel Monster cards, but I'm afraid that I don't have my deck with me. Yugi most likely will have it though.

[ Since they share a deck and all. ]

We have Monster, trap, spell, virus, equip and illusion cards.

[ And then there's the God cards, but... ]

Do all of those equip on the monster cards?

Just the equip cards. A lot of them are activated more during a situation that occurs that triggers it. Like summoning a certain type of monster or things like that.

I think I get it. A lot of digimon cards have effects like that. Sometimes it was even like that when the cards became real.

Real?

[ Another card game, like Duel Monsters? ]

Mmm, we used to think that it was just a card game. But the truth is that digimon are living creatures who live in another world. [Takato smiles.] I'm a digimon tamer. If Guilmon was here I could use the cards from the game to give him extra abilities.

Duel Monsters is very much the same way - at least the current version of it. The version from Egypt was a lot more real... and dangerous.

Do duel monsters have their own world too?

It's a bit complicated, but yes.

[Takato was fascinated. ]

Can people travel there? And can they come into the real world?

Usually it only happens when one plays a yami no game. They are dangerous, however, and normally the outcome is not a pleasant one if you are the loser in a duel.

I haven't tried to see yet if I am able to summon them here as I did back in Egypt, however.

Would they create trouble if you did?

What's a yami no game?

It would depend on the summoner.

A Game of Darkness. Usually when involved, if there is cheating, the loser will pay a penalty. It's usually harsh, depending on the infraction done.

Are they called dark because of the penalty?

[duelistoflegend]

To an extent, I suppose.

Of course, one cannot properly call a yami no game unless they possess the ability to do so. There are very few in today's world that have that ability.

[ And a Sennen Item. ]

Why is that?

They need to posses a Sennen Item and be able to properly wield it.

Originally, they were used by my father and his priests and then passed down to me and mine after his death. After that... I used their power to seal a great evil and the games, only to have them awaken again after three thousand years.

But what is a Sennen item?

A great evil? [Takato was obviously impressed by this.]

The puzzle Yugi wears around his neck is one, although this place has seemingly rendered it powerless.

[ Which would make sense, he supposes, since it's not like he's bound to it at the moment. ]

Mmm. And I don't doubt that he would have been satisfied with merely destroying Egypt.

[Takato looks down at the ground sadly. ]

I guess that's pretty common among people who want to do things like that. There was something we fought at home. It...

[He frowns. ]

Its hard to explain, but it said that everyone had grown beyond what they were supposed to be. It didn't understand things like sadness and feelings, and it thought that the only solution was to destroy everything. To delete reality.

.... why would it think that?

[ He's not entirely sure what Takato means, how does one judge if something has grown beyond what it's supposed to be? ]

It was a program. It was just trying to do what it was programmed to do, but it didn't understand that change wasn't a bad thing.

[ Okay, Atem can follow that a little. From what he understands about modern technology, he picked up through Yugi and his friends, and the Kaibas. ]

So it was programmed to work a certain way and couldn't think any other way.

[ Well, people could be like that too, he supposes. Look at the thief, he was so blinded by his hatred (which Atem would admit that was deserved), but he couldn't look beyond that to see other ideas besides mass destruction. ]

In some ways it evolved and learned, just like the digimon had evolved from what they had been once. But the D-Reaper... Its original purpose was to stop the digimon from evolving too quickly. It was supposed to be a kind of balance.

But when the digimon had evolved past the need for that, the D-Reaper was still there. It was still trying to do the same thing. And it decided that because everything had evolved beyond its parameters, it need to erase everything.

It did some really terrible things. It hurt one of my friends a lot. But even now, I don't think I could hate it. Is that strange?

No, I don't think so. It just means that you have an overwhelming capacity for compassion. For both friends and enemies.

[ He's quiet for a long moment. ]

Yugi is very much the same way.
