[Simon continues to be so tall that he's basically peering down at the top of Trucy's hat.]

In Japan, the light of fireflies has quite the spiritual meaning. They are said to be the altered form of the souls of fallen soldiers.

[ STOP BEING TALL SIMON JEEZ. To be fair, EVERYONE towers over Trucy, though. ]

Oh, I see! That makes sense! W-wait, though... what happens if someone squashes one? I mean, what happens to their soul then? Whoever made this theory up should have thought about that!

Whoever devised this theory was under the assumption that most people would tread with care and respect around the souls of fallen warriors.

But what about the people who are afraid of bugs?

[ She stares up at Simon. This is a legit question, a real concern here. If these things are really souls of fallen warriors, they're obviously in grave danger... well, they would be, if they were here. Or around people who'd be terrified of them, at least. ]

What if they don't know? And they have a can of bug spray?!

[Good lord, Simon is starting to wonder whether these sort of ludicrous scenarios were born of Wright's influence on this poor girl. The apple of overactive imagination doesn't fall far from the tree, if so.

Those who've already passed on cannot die a second time. I would assume they are reincarnated again and again. Though, not before placing a dreadful curse on whoever sprayed them with vile poison.

That's what my mother used to tell me. When I was little I bragged to her about the firefly I caught at Junie's, and she scolded me. She said it wasn't nice to do that to fallen soldiers...I never understood it, though.

[Simon's expression hardens quite a bit at those words. Metis is always a difficult subject for him.]

Cykes-dono... was very wise. I doubt that she was truly angry with you. She merely hoped to teach you about Japanese folklore.

Mm, I know...she could be very stern and firm with me, but she never got angry. And...she liked doing that. Most of what I know about Japanese culture is thanks to her.

[sadface, this isn't easy for her either. Sorry Trucy, the mood's getting kinda heavy]

[Simon's around, so the mood was bound to get heavy eventually. He's silent for a moment, idly chewing at the feather in his mouth, and then:]

[He looks away when Athena breaks into a smile, eyebrows contracting into something of a twitchy frown.]

... It is what Cykes-dono would have wanted. [YUP. He's only offering for his old mentor's sake, and certainly not because he wants to spend more time with his would-be little sis.]
