Friends, Fayren Citizens, lend me your ears!

Who: Satori, and You
Where: Straight to your devices!
What: Guardian Election Things!
When: December 14th

Satori was seated in her usual armchair in Chireiden, yet again in the room that was the source for her semi-frequent Fireside Chat/State of the City style broadcasts. This time, as before, she seemed quite relaxed and content, a cup of tea on the table in front of her. Her animals, as they often did, were crowded around the back and foot of the chair. Satori had also invited Koishi into the room, it seems, the younger sister at her side and slightly out of frame of the camera, a bird perched on her shoulder. After a calm, deliberate sip of tea, she spoke...

"It has been some time since I've opened a proper public interview and discussion about my Guardianship, but there are so many issues currently on my mind that I would have hated to repeat myself during the Guardian debates attempting to reply to them all. I am opening this to anyone who wishes to air greivances or mention concerns about my administration."

With that, Satori leaned closer to the camera, just a little. An errant bird at her side was displaced, flying up to the cieling and glaring down in confusion. Satori's focus didn't change, but her tone remained all too serious for this sort of thing.

"Firstly, I understand that some have issues regarding my collaboration with Alice and the creation of squads of dolls placed throughout Fayren. If my challenger is considering their removing them as an entire tier of her platform there must something the matter. On the other hand, no one has bothered to approach me directly about it. The only complaints I've heard have only been rather general ones from right after their introduction into Fayren's defenses. If enough concerned people had approached me about the situation beforehand, I would have considered trying to accomodate their complaints or concerns. But it must be said that such claims are not taken lightly and should not be used as a weapon."

That last comment had quite a bit of a darker turn to it, suggesting that Satori was a mite more offended than she let on. She couldn't rightly govern if nobody let her know about it, could she?

"These dolls are far less expensive than hiring an army's worth of security personnel that would accomodate safety to similar levels. The dolls are also unbiased: They cannot be threatened, cajoled, bribed, or intimidated and their only purpose is to capture and detain lawbrakers until Fayren's law enforcement properly arrives on the scene. They were also not meant for particularily powerful or clever criminals which would be far out of their parameters, but only to streamline and reduce the workload of petty crime so that Fayren's law enforcement and defensive capabilities can be brought to bear in the event of some major disaster without the distractions of day-to-day breaches of the law. The money that Fayren's economy saves by using these dolls as support as well as a fair amount of my Guardian's paycheque is sent directly into a defense and relief fund for the purpose of providing more effective aid in the event of another attack or disaster in or around Fayren."

"If any remember the beast attack released by the Hands of Decay, since their implementation, the well known anti-mage terrorist group known as the Hands of Decay seems to have almost completely ceased their activity within the city. Of course, this hardly means they do not present a threat, but the fact they seem to have been driven from the city and may have lost a major foothold is the first step to halting their operations entirely. Overall, it at least appears the dolls' presence has acted as something of a deterrant and with gradual improvements, we will hopefully further reduce crime and other illegal activities within Fayren. If another Guardian steps up to take my place, the dolls will be transferred over to their control. I hope they will make good use of them."

Satori's tone shifts from her dreadful seriousness to something a little more calm once again as she puts her hand to her cheek, taking yet another sip with her free hand. She almost seems a little more content when getting off such a topic. She's arranged things well enough so that future leaders have SOME kind of safety net to fall back on, and to her, that's par for the course.

"On the subject of peacekeeping, I'd also like to take the time to thank all those who claimed bounties in Fayren and helped stop criminal activities during my terms as Guardian. Even as Guardian, any assistance is quite welcome and warranted. Even with this position and the power if affords to me at the moment, there are only so many resources I can bring to bear on my own. In that way, all of your work has been invaluable to Fayren and to myself."

"I also understand that many complaints about my recent term in particular seem aimed at how I am 'hands-off' or 'reclusive' in Fayren's affairs. While I do not wish to make excuses, I will reiterate some facts about myself, so that you will understand why I lead the way I do. I prefer private meetings with my deputies and allies when possible. This is because, simply put, it is harmful for me to participate in public appearances, rallies, and even the Guardian Debates. And yet, against all logical sense, I weather it for the sake of Fayren when I absolutely must. One may also call to mind the invasion of Attleton by Gilgamesh, in which I arrived in-person with a large group of Oni to help distract and repel the mad king from taking or destroying the city entirely. Even the actions of Mewtwo as my deputy guardian were organized through psychic link and we were always in close contact. But the noise of other minds is actively painful to me in large quantities. Imagine stepping into a room where everyone is talking loudly about everything on their minds in unison and multiply that by ten, following you constantly. Most people not sharing my mind-reading abilities wish I could 'turn it off' and leave them be and that many in Fayren do not enjoy having their minds read considering it a violation of their privacy. For those of you that think so, I understand your concerns, but I cannot shut my mind-reading off. I cannot stop listening to the thoughts of others short of harming my third eye or grieviously damaging my brain. And if you've seen Koishi, who can't read the minds of others, it's because she'd resorted to such measures in the past which made her into what she is now, all because she could not handle the stress of the thoughts--

"Also it hurt a lot!" It seemed Koishi had been paying attention. She removed her hat and placing it on her sister's head, giving Satori a bright smile before turning her attention back to the bird on her shoulder.

Satori returned her smile for a moment as she continued where she'd left off. That had lifted her spirits, at least a bit. "--On a more positive note, I intend to adjust myself more in terms of public appearances if I find a solution in this regard. I could potentially bring my sister on any official business. Her presence actively blocks reading of minds, but I fear she may be fickle or unreliable in helping me block my abilities sufficiently. Nevertheless, I will find at least some solution to this, if my term is to continue."

By now, her expression shows conviction, or possibly determination as she turns to Koishi. Perhaps her previous frankness about her sister's condition might've been a problem. But it also seems she's offering her to go-ahead to speak as she likes once she's said her own piece, whatever that may bring.

"I wish nothing but the best for Fayren and its people whether I am elected or not, and despite any recent disorganization, I feel I have done well. Everything is organized in such a way that, if I am your Guardian for another term, I will continue my endeavours to do the best I can for Fayren and improve it in all respects. And should someone else become Guardian after me, I am still very much willing to provide assistance, support and advice. If they dislike mind reading, I'm prepared to do so over the phone, if that suits them better. I should hope my relationship with any new Guardians will be sufficient enough that they will call upon my help if their desire or need arises. In such cases, figuratively, my door are always open."

Satori, leaning back a little, offered the faintest and thinnest of smiles. But a genuine one.

"Lastly, let me take the time to thank You. Yes, You. All of You. Every single one of you who supported me thus far and those of you who still support me, now. Your assistance and admiration has been more than welcome during my terms as Guardian, and I wish you all the best, where ever this election will take us. I will now open the floor to questions or comments and will try and reply to as many as I can."

Here's a BS-to-normal translation:

"Being an autist, I can't possibly fathom how a bunch of inhuman, cold, calculating law-enforcers could possibly rub people the wrong way. It's almost like there's some benefit in having your police force also be integrated, and thus accountable, members of the community you can talk to and reason with, rather than unfeeling robots deaf to any kind of appeal or public sensibility. What's the big deal, having an entire class of non-people managing the laws of actual people? It's not like Fayren already has class tensions so thick you could cut them with a knife...wait.

Whatever! Some of you might also think it's insane to hold public office when you're a walking privacy violator who finds other people unbearable. Did you forget how awesome I am? No? Well uh...here's an unrelated sob story, so criticizing me makes you an asshole. Checkmate!

Oh, right I should probably stop talking about myself seem more gracious. Thanks for all the people who helped out. I don't know your names and I don't care to learn them, but token gestures still count, right?"

Koishi snatched the phone away from Satori before she could respond.

"You're not very good at socializing, are you? But that's okay. I'm not either." Koishi gave a big smile into the camera. "You're fairly good at humor though, and I can respect that. Even if you're a little caustic about it."

"The delivery needed work though. Saying it instead of writing it would help since it's a different form of humor. Keep trying though! I'm sure you'll get it eventually."

It was eerie how sincere she sounded, though anyone who was familiar with Koishi would know better.

98% of that isn't wrong.

Is there anything you require, Satori?

In that case, I will be over soon. I could use the interaction myself.

[Grell really tried to pay attention to this but it was even more long winded than herself, which is saying something because she like to hear herself talk. But eventually she watches all the way through and reads that anonymous text comment. Well, she should've just waited for the abridged version.

Either way, Grell looks less than impressed with the video.]

Perhaps it hasn't been brought to your attention because you were so...scarce?

If I may, that simply isn't true. There are a multitude of ways to bring issues to the Guardian's attention regardless of where they are or what they're doing. Satori has made no effort to discourage contact, and the Guardian's office forwards all messages and communications to her residences. I saw to that personally.

This is quite true, but as they say: out of sight, out of mind. Her doors to communications may be open, but a lack of presence doesn't make it seem so.

And yet no Guardian makes concerted efforts to seek out the problems of their cities. It is expected of the people within the cities to bring their issues to the Guardians as they arise, so that the Guardians may have normal lives.

They are Guardians. Not babysitters. Why should Satori be held to a different standard?

It's not just her. All guardians are and should be held to a different standard. I would have an issue if I hardly heard much from any guardian.

[The only reason Grell knew Satori was a guardian was because she had to go look it up.]

And yet none of the guardians make themselves heard as guardians. They go about their business as normal citizens until something requires their attention as guardian. When was the last time Weiss Schnee made a public announcement as Guardian? Or David Haller? Or any of the guardians?

You're reaching for reasons to single her out simply because she keeps to herself in her free time, so as to protect the privacy of others while sparing herself physical pain. She does not shirk her duties as Guardian, and I have not seen anyone in this place as dedicated to her role as she is. So unless you have something relevant to say, I suggest you end this farce.

If you believe that a concern like this, where I'm not the only one with such a concern, is a farce, then--

[--wait just a minute. WHY IS SHE TALKING TO THIS...BEING ABOUT THIS?! Grell crosses her arms, frowning at the realization.]

This is exactly what I mean.
