My fellow denizens,

[Grell comes onto the feed, walking along the streets in Everglade. Her hair is in a high ponytail today, and in her usual garb for her patrols. She looks rather serious, frowning a bit, which isn’t her usual demeanor.]

With the recent incident involving the Children of Elo, measures have been taken to improve security and curb incidents like these from occurring again. These measurements have already been distributed via email and post, so there will be no reason for not knowing. I would encourage business owners to comply with these measures, before more unfortunate victims arise and legal action be taken upon them for negligence.

[She stops in her stride once at her destination. A part of town occupied by very few people.]

Also, The Red House Foundation has an official location in Everglade, so if you or someone you know are in need of shelter, then you or they will be exempt from the limitations on travel while staying at the shelter. More details are available at the foundation, as well as flyers from my boutique in Fayren. Business owners should expect their more detailed information packet in the mail within the week.

This is also a warning to those who occupy abandoned buildings. Please vacate them and set yourself up at the shelter. [Her face changes, so that it seems less harsh than her previous messages.] It’s much warmer and food is readily available.

[Grell can be in a number of places at your choosing with any scenario (excluding adult themes…). By default, she’ll be at her lingerie boutique in Fayren unless otherwise noted. The mannequins in the windows can’t dress themselves!]

(OOC: The measurements she mentioned have to do with a thorough check of the manifest of cargo being carried in. Every piece of cargo scheduled to come into Everglade must be properly labeled as they will be checked and accounted for, and anything not on the manifesto will be abandoned before entering the Everglade Archway at the expense of whomever sent it. Also, shipments must be scheduled, and any shipment not scheduled to be received that day will be sent back. Drivers must have their photo ID visible or ready to show officials and must match up with whomever is scheduled to drive in cargo that day. Businesses that don’t comply with the enhanced security checks may have their shipment sent back, face limits on the amount of cargo they can send, and/or even be temporarily banned from selling their goods in Everglade until they are up to par with the new regulations.

It will no doubt cause delays in receiving goods, but these attacks must be prevented. Grell doesn’t make this common knowledge to the public because that would only give the culprits a heads up.)

It's quite a well oiled incline. There will come a time when one side will slip up and cause an avalanche.

[She just shrugs casually.]

You seem to be well versed in fear.

[Well, he only just got blown up by a planet-destroying weapon, if he were smart he'd avoid all hits for now.]

I have been an insurgent all my life. Understanding fear is part of my job. It's very useful in knowing when to run... among other things.

It's taught me that if you drive people too far in their fear, they become a mindless mob. Nobody can control that anymore.

Oh? Were you fighting against the embodiment of fear, then?

I personally think people around here fear for their lives, but they've become used to it.

[Which isn't helpful to the situation.]

Handling a mindless mob would be easier, if you compare the two.

A mindless mob will turn against everyone, even itself. That's useful enough if chaos is the goal that suits you best, but you don't want to leave behind a battlefield in Everglade, do you? [ His voice is hardening again, it's more than a rhetorical question. ]

And no, I haven't fought against the embodiment of fear. Just against an enemy who knows how to wield it as a weapon. That's what tyrants commonly do.

[Grell quirks an eyebrow at his tone.]

I do not.

[Meaning she knows someone else who would want just that.]

There's a reason why they rule so well. They aren't dumb. Ruling with an iron fist gets results. How long it lasts is another thing altogether.

[She does not, yes, that is noted.]

The answer is not very long. At least not without resistance. I'm someone who has spent all his life resisting various tyrants, and I can tell you that fear will only keep people down for so long. There comes a point when you have grown numb to terror, or have lost so much that the danger of losing more doesn't matter anymore.

Ruling with an iron fist will keep you in power for a while, but every tyrant is eventually overthrown... even if it's only by a worse tyrant.

Think of how the dead must feel. [She only smirks lightly.] Not much left to lose after your life is over.

[There is a sigh, however.]

In my case, however, there's a lot of responsibility to uphold for the time being. I can't really afford to be careless.

[He takes a moment to think about that.] Maybe there's nothing much left to lose for the dead, but as long as you are alive enough to feel pain there's something to fear. Death isn't very frightening. It's just the end of life. It's what leads to dying that should scare people.

But this is getting a little bit morbid for a casual conversation. I'm glad you aren't careless. Too much depends on you making the right decisions.

For some, that is the sort of thrill that gives them their jollies.

[The rush before the end. She certainly is one of them.]

I'd take morbid over angry conversations any day. As for making the right decisions, that's all subject to what the citizens believe. Nevertheless, I did enjoy this conversation.

I don't often have angry conversations, I can control myself better than that. [He gets angry about a lot of things, though, he just knows when he can afford to let it show. And here, in this new place, that isn't often.] I try to keep morbid conversations to a minimum... though you don't seem to mind such topics. It makes most people uncomfortable.

I"m not most people. [Shrugs lightly.] DEATH is not uncommon, so it makes little sense to be uncomfortable talking about it.

Most people don't like to be reminded of their own mortality. For my part, I don't mind mortality. I would almost call the certainty of death comforting. You just have to make sure you're dying for something worth dying for.

Making sure you've lived a worthwhile life is what everyone strives for. Dying for a worthy cause is also important.

[Grell gives Cassian a curious heat tilt.]

What is it that you do here, Cassian?

[ He returns the curious look, his usual frown nearly smoothing out in his curiosity. ]

Here in Genessia? I would like to know that myself. Or are you speaking of this conversation?

[There is a slightly wry smile from her at his reply.]

I did mean in Genessia. Still looking for work, then?

[He just looks back, unimpressed. That's the easier question.]

No. I work security in the welcome center in Nova City.

[Now it's her turn to look a bit confused.]

...why? One would think having so many robots around and high end surveillance, human security would be obsolete.

[He gives a little shrug.]

I don't know their reasoning. I get paid for it. I don't ask why Weiss Schnee wants to pay me instead of buying another security droid. Maybe she fears that droids can be easily reprogrammed.

Ah, you're working for Miss Schnee.

She'd be correct if the latter is true. They would be easy to hack, if given a chance to try, especially if their programming is all the same.

[...which does give her an idea. For now, Grell gives him a light smile.]

[ Oops. Should not be giving such ideas, even if this reason occurred to him since he has done it before. ]

They might be easy to slice... or they might kill you for it, if you fail. But since neither you nor I are intending to slice Nova City's security droids, that's not our concern, is it?

[There's a hint of steely warning to his voice at that. He may have no particular loyalty to Schnee, but he does believe in law and order as long as it's in reliable hands.]

I have no complaints working for her, other than building security not being as exciting as what I'm used to.
