Guardian Debates!

[ Everyone's TVs will flicker on and to the Genessia News Channel for a Live Special Report. The Show Host pops out from beneath the podium, a cool tenor voice coming straight from him as he addresses the camera. ]

Well heeeeello there everyone! We interrupt your day for a very special report! It's your favorite host with news about the City Guardian Election, live! We're so sorry this television broadcast had to be delayed in the wake of the most recent tragedies. Speaking of which, if you need help rebuilding: Check out our sponsor, the CCCC Construction, Carpentry, and Cleaning Company in Attleton. It's thanks to them that we were able to get our Election Debate set up despite recent destruction. Now, let's take a look at this election's candidates.

We are broadcasting live from right here in Genessia City. Many folks are in attendance, including our very own GCPD who are here to monitor and keep the peace. Now onto the debate. Now let's begin the live debate-slash-Q&A you've all been waiting for. Here's how it works: You all come up with questions to ask each of the Guardians, and each Guardian will have the opportunity to answer it to help you decide which of your candidates is the right one for your city.

Look out Attleton, here comes Cassian Andor to challenge current Guardian Blaze! Award-winning cook and a man whose name is literally Blaze- they're going to set the stage on fire tonight!

Everglade, more like ever beautiful! Please welcome the lovely ladies Remilia Scarlet and current Guardian Grell Sutcliff, the baddest of the badasses running for City Guardian in Everglade!

Fayren's got one heck of a variety this time, the first election in a long while not to feature royalty! The peasants will rise to the rank of City Guardian! Welcome Qubine, Alice Margatroid, Mavis Vermillion, and Yukiko Amagi!

Watch out- It's Nova City candidates coming through! These two futuristic frontrunners are looking to fight! Welcome current Guardian Weiss Schnee and challenger Captain James T. Kirk.

And last bit not least, the center of the cities and center of our hearts, Genessia City! Let's hear what our candidates have to say, welcome the effervescent Princess Zelda, cool and collected Michio, current super Guardian David Haller, and ruggedly handsome Peter Quill.

Let's get started folks! Get out of the showers and into the town hall for this live debate, starting in 30 minutes! You've still got time to pop in, let's go, and don't forget to cast your votes this Sunday, June 25th at the polls!

{ OOC NOTE: Anyone can reply to this post with a question they want to ask the potential City Guardians. Each City Guardian candidate is tasked with answering any question on this post. No candidate is required to, but lack of participation may affect public opinion of the candidate! Lack of any activity during the election season will disqualify your candidate, however.

On June 25th, the polls will officially go up and each character will be afforded one vote for each city. So if you play 5 characters, you will need to submit 5 IC vote choices, if you only play 1, then only that character will vote. This means you as the player are voting on your character's behalf because it's going to be in the OOC comm just so that we can include instructions. There will be further information at that time as well as a link to a "booklet" with candidate information. For now though, the debate is here! }

Many of the Guardians and hopefuls displayed their ability in their willingness to defend their respective cities in this past time of crisis. But some eventually left their archway positions to enter the caves when there were many volunteers on the team already.

How can we be safely assured that - should you be elected - you will not leave your post at the sign of future "adventure" shall we say?

One cannot be assured of such a thing, more so in the knowledge that the 'adventure' as you quote might be a means to help the city as a whole or might be dealing with something that could potentially affect it.

So while I cannot say for certain I would never leave my post to go somewhere else, I would only be doing so in the knowledge that 1) I'm doing so because of the city and 2) I do so in the knowledge there will be someone whoever becomes the deputy in order to make sure there is someone who I would trust to handle the situation while I was away dealing with something else.

While I am one to sometimes join in on efforts to investigate and resolve an incident, I wouldn't leave my post without a plan or without leaving behind adequate defense if I'm ever going into an investigation.

If it is not a potential threat to the city, I will stay where I am and focus on the people's needs.

Leaving my post during a crisis, I feel, should only be something done as a last resort. Wouldn't a guardian be expected to coordinate defences in their city?

[ Cassian's silent for a while, looking honestly shaken by that accusation. ]

That's a good point. I didn't consider that just being a candidate would come with the citizens' expectation to stay and defend the archway. If I had realized that, I wouldn't have left.

I left because I understood myself as a sole defender, a civilian of sorts, and the defense of Attleton was in good hands. I believed I would do more good in Fayren. I didn't go to seek adventure. But s guardian, I would be focused solely on defending Attleton.

It depends. When the time comes to defend Fayren, then I will stay and defend it, unless the circumstances become so dire that I must retreat and rethink my strategy. But I would certainly not give up on it until my dying breath.

[Even during the spirit invasion, he was forced to take shelter because he couldn't fight them all off.]

However, when things are peaceful, I do like to explore all of the cities. They are all connected, so I believe I should learn all I can about them.

Leaving your post purely for the sake of “adventure” isn’t acceptable for anyone that has a role in defending the public. However, I do believe that if there is something to be gained from the excursion and you aren’t leaving your subordinates alone with no orders or a plan, then stepping away might be fine. Some like to take a more active role in fixing their cities problems, and there is no shame in that. People here have different skills and abilities and if a Guardian has some that can greatly help with finding a solution to a situation, then they are almost obligated to go.

But if they are going purely for the “adventure”, then no, one shouldn’t do that. I think this past crisis shows how committed I am to protecting Genessia City. And having the ability to teleport and communicate via telepathy makes coordinating and getting from place to place efficiently. Even if I had to step away from the city, it wouldn’t be for very long. I did so when things started, going to the Cloister Of Trails when things started, hoping for a quick fix since like I said, that’s how we fixed the barrier the last time. But I only did that after things were in place and everyone knew where to go for safety.

I have to agree with David; go where you're needed and can be the most useful; that's just basic tactics. Going just for the sake of going is of course never in the best interest of others.

Though to counter your question; "adventure" is quite a board term, if I were to go for ice cream, some might make a statement. I can not safely answer that I won't leave my post, though while some might deem it "adventure", I can say that I would never desert for foolish reasons.

Look, when all of that was going down I wasn't a Guardian, and I didn't have a post. I did what I could, with what I had and when we had a clue for something that might be able to stop it? Yeah, I went there.

Seemed like it beat just kind of hoping the spirits got bored and went away eventually.

I don't call that expedition 'adventure' because of that. In fact, it was going down there that lead to me, Ildiko, Namur, and Sync who found the person responsible. 'Guardian' doesn't have to be as literal as 'stand here and Guard this gate.'

If I'm elected? I'll be where I'm needed. If I have to split my attention that's what my deputies are for. Whether they're there or I am, I'm gonna make sure people are safe. That's the whole point.

What kind of a-hole would it make me if I didn't?

A very valid question. There shouldn't be a reason to leave the city they chose to defend, but there will be times where it may be necessary if there aren't enough volunteers to go on an... [uses air quotes] adventure. But, as we have seen, there are many of us here that are ready and willing to heed the call to gather information in the stead of Guardians, so there is at least that assurance that City Guardians would not need to leave their post.

With that said, I wouldn't leave my city unprotected in an emergency unless absolutely necessary. Such an instance hasn't occurred yet, fortunately.

A very good question. When adventure calls, it can be hard to resist. Still being a guardian is a bit like being a guild master. It means you have a post to keep, that you must try to get a global overview of the situation at all times and you cannot do that if you're too much involved in the situation yourself.

Besides, protecting the city should be the priority of a guardian at all times. Even the perspective of an adventure would not be enough to have me forget my duty.

Also, fortunately, guardians are not alone: they have their deputies and all the people that are willing to help when a crisis occurs on which they can rely. I would trust them to handle the situation and keep me updated.

In my opinion, a guardian is a strategist, a coordinator, that can provide support to several people and deal with several situation at once. A situation that would require a guardian to leave their post to provide direct assistance would be... very dire to say the least.

[Like the war between Fiore and the Alvarez Empire, back home.]

Some Nova deputies went on my permission after an effective regrouping and restrategizing that made certain that Nova City still had more deputies than any other city defending the gate in addition to private defenders, but considering that the cities were considered protected by the current guardians, I think it would be odd to expect someone to do the job that they haven't been given yet in regards to the candidates.

Particularly since attempting to apprehend the suspect that caused the problem should be a part of that job regardless. Doing well as a Guardian isn't simply about short-term protection and ignoring potential solutions to prevent future catastrophes as well.

If anyone had gone just looking for adventure, I would say you were right, but it sounds to me like you're just trying to cause problems for those who went to protect-- the only reason anyone even went to the Maw that day was because Jaune Arc, one of my deputies, had information from a criminal by the name of Dr. Seek who happened to have information about the flowers and the crystals that lead to the Maw. Do you have any particular reason to assume anyone went for the sake of adventure instead of for the sake of stopping the breach?
